Roku is betting its fire-sale pickup of the shows from Quibi, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s short-lived, short-form startup, will continue to pay off for the streaming platform.
On Aug. 13, the company will premiere 23 new Roku Originals (each of them from Quibi’s library) exclusively on the Roku Channel to stream for free with ads. It’s the second tranche of Quibi shows coming to the Roku Channel, after Roku bowed 30 titles in May.
The new shows coming to the Roku Channel include “Mapleworth Murders,” a “Murder She Wrote” spoof that nabbed three 2021 Emmy acting nominations for Paula Pell, John Lutz and J.B. Smoove. Also on the slate are four previously unreleased Quibi titles: “Eye Candy” hosted by Josh Groban, a competition series in which contestants attempt to identify outrageous edible creations that look like everyday objects; cleaning competition “Squeaky Clean” hosted by Leslie Jordan; Season 2 of money-giveaway reality show “Thanks a...

Back in September of last year, Steven Soderbergh spoke to us to help promote his Quibi (Rip) series, “Wireless.” Yes, that feels like ages ago and also shows just how quick the demise of Quibi was, but perhaps the best part of our conversation was when he teased the potential of a revival of “The Knick.” Well, months later, it appears that the third season of the underrated Cinemax series is still progressing with André Holland and Barry Jenkins leading the way.

Tye Sheridan has joined the cast of George Clooney’s next film, “The Tender Bar,” which is set up at Amazon and will star alongside Ben Affleck.
Clooney is directing the film from a screenplay by “The Departed” writer William Monahan, and he’s also producing under his Smokehouse Pictures banner with Grant Heslov, as will Ted Hope under his first-look deal with Amazon Studios.
“The Tender Bar” is based off a memoir by Pulitzer Prize-winning author J.R. Moehringer, who is also the film’s subject and who will also serve as an executive producer on the film. The memoir recounts Moehringer’s adolescent years as he grows up on Long Island in search of a father figure among the patrons at his uncle’s bar.

Leave it to Steven Soderbergh to reinvent the wheel once again when it comes to independent filmmaking. It turns out that his next project, the HBO Max comedy “Let Them All Talk,” was shot in just about two weeks and was largely improvised by its cast. The film stars Meryl Streep, Dianne Wiest, and Candice Bergen, who all play longtime friends who reconvene on an ocean liner for a reminiscent talkfest spiked with banter and regret. First details on the making of the film were detailed in an Entertainment Weekly conversation with the cast, who revealed some telling behind-the-scenes secrets.
“I told [Soderbergh] he was gonna ruin everything for every director, and every production designer, and everything else, because he made the movie for 25 cents — I know that’s what I was paid,” Streep said. “Then it was made in two weeks, and it was a free ride on the boat.

Exclusive: Andie MacDowell is set as a lead opposite Margaret Qualley in Maid, Netflix’s dramedy series from writer Molly Smith Metzler, John Wells Productions, Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television.
In the first on-screen pairing of the mother-daughter acting duo, MacDowell will play Qualley’s mom.
Written by Metzler, Maid is inspired by Stephanie Land’s bestselling memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive. It revolves around Alex (Qualley), a single mother who turns to housekeeping to — barely — make ends meet as she battles against poverty, homelessness, and bureaucracy. Told primarily through her point of view, Maid is described as a beautiful, alive, gritty and inspiring exploration of poverty in America.
MacDowell plays Alex’s mother, Paula, a self-proclaimed artist, who is the life of every party. She is eccentric, passionate, scrappy, and unabashed about her sexuality, which attracts an endless rotation of boyfriends.

Rumors have long swirled around a revival of the Steven Soderbergh-directed Cinemax series “The Knick” that ended after two seasons in 2015; the cabler then canceled it for good in 2017.
Now Soderbergh says that a new season of the medical drama starring Clive Owen as a renowned surgeon in 1900s New York is in its early stages. According to a new interview with The Playlist, Soderbergh said a pilot has been written by the series’ creators Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, with “The Knick” star André Holland as well as filmmaker Barry Jenkins working in collaboration.
“[André and Barry] came up with a really great approach with Jack and Michael,” Soderbergh said. “And that seems to be advancing rapidly. I just read the pilot, which is terrific.”
Soderbergh remained coy about whether or not Jenkins would direct the series. “I’m very passive on that,” Soderbergh said. “That’s all Barry’s baby.
