It can be hard to tell sometimes what is a Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. You look at the credentials on a particular film without looking at the title and surely it has to be a mega popular hit. You have Italian mega director Dario Argento, Oscar nominated Piper Laurie, James Russo, Brad Douriff, and special effects by another master of his craft in none other than Tom Savini. I set you up with all those names and accomplishments and maybe you wrack your brain on the possibility that you have seen or even heard of the movie. But I say have you seen the 1993 horror movie Trauma (watch it Here) and I’m guessing for most people, the answer will be no. That is a sure fire way for a movie to end up on this show and that’s why today you will learn why Trauma is...

Who Saw Her Die? (Chi l’ha vista morire?), directed by Aldo Lado, is a striking entry in the Italian horror genre that flourished during the late 1960s and 1970s. The film combines the typical Giallo elements of mystery, psychological tension, and stylized violence with a moody atmosphere that sets it apart from its contemporaries.
Set against the hauntingly beautiful backdrop of Venice, the film tells the story of sculptor Franco Serpieri (played by George Lazenby), whose daughter, Roberta, is brutally murdered shortly after arriving in the city. As Franco delves into the mystery of her death, he uncovers a series of child murders that eerily mirror the fate of his own daughter. The film is notable for its brooding atmosphere, where Venice’s foggy canals...

It’s the shock of seeing Norman Bates, knife in hand, clad in his mother’s clothes, grinning maniacally in the swinging lamplight. It’s a supposedly dead husband rising from a bathtub with terrifying saucer contact-lenses. It’s finally connecting “I see dead people” with Bruce Willis being shot at the beginning of “The Sixth Sense.” When movies pull the rug out from under us, it’s one of the greatest thrills that cinema can provide.

Thanks to a new 2k restoration by Altered Innocence, the psychosexual thriller finally gets a proper release a half-century later. Not only does The Strangler offer a stylized character portrait centered around a killer, but the restoration finally carves out its earned space in Giallo‘s history.

Mumbai, Aug 7 (Ians) Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap, whose films like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Ugly’, ‘Dev.D’, ‘Black Friday’ and others have strengthened the parallel cinema in India and have cultivated an enormous fan base, is set to visit the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Iffm) as his upcoming film ‘Kennedy’ has been selected as the closing film at the festival.
Kashyap, who is often credited as the poster boy of the present day indie cinema in India, shared that he had the idea of ‘Kennedy’ brewing inside him for 20 years but it only got materialised when the pandemic hit the world. In a way, the pandemic became the perfect physical setting for Kashyap’s story as he wanted to give it a very “comic book” kind of a spin to the story.

#Manhole is screening at Berlinale
On the evening before his wedding day, Shunsuke (Yuto Nakajima) walks into into his own stag party he was unaware of. The mood is excellent: as congratulations pour in, so do drinks. A bit wobbly after a drink too many in a pub in Shibuya district, Shunsuke falls inside a manhole, and wakes up injured and unable to climb back to the street. To make things worse, his cellphone Gps stops working and a heavy rain starts falling making his situation more insufferable.

Heritage Italian sport brand Diadora and iconic NYC sneaker retailer Extra Butter take an avant-garde approach to footwear with the collaborative sneaker drop S8000 “Giallo 2.0,” which pays tribute to the Italian horror subgenre known as the “Giallo” film – notable classics include Blood and Black Lace, Deep Red, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, and Suspiria.
The S8000 Giallo 2.0 will be exclusively launching at Extra Butter in-store Friday, January 27th at 11Am and online at extrabutterny.com on Saturday, January 28th at 9am Est.
“The term Giallo literally translates to yellow, which was originally a literary reference to yellow colored paperbacks of Italian mystery novels in the 1930s that focused on themes that
influenced a movement for Italian filmmakers decades later,” says Extra Butter Creative Director, Bernie Gross. “Unlike the classic American slashers that relied on gore and jump-scare tactics, Giallo films were more psychological and featured highly styled cinematography. The...

Profound Fart Work
August has been a whirlwind month of far-ranging films! Trace and I started with our first John Carpenter in the made-for-tv film Someone’s Watching Me!, then moved on to Clive Barker’s ambitious Nightbreed before jetting across the world to tackle Michele Soavi’s Giallo/Slasher film Stage Fright.
Now we’re back Stateside with Robert Eggers‘ inky black and white masterpiece: 2019’s The Lighthouse.
In the film, Robert Pattinson plays Winslow, a rookie lighthouse keeper partnered with an older – and more controlling – older man (Willem Dafoe) for a one month stint manning the titular instrument on a deserted island. Despite warnings to the contrary, Winslow kills a sea bird and the two men are swept up in a storm that seems to upend time (and maybe space?).
Oh, and there’s plenty of homoeroticism and farting!

The Italian maestro is back! Yes, Dario Argento, one of Italian cinema’s great horror filmmakers has stepped back behind the camera for Occhiali Neri (Black Glasses), the director’s first movie since 2012’s much-ridiculed Dracula 3D, which is actually based on a script he wrote with Franco Ferrini that was shelved in 2002 when the films original production company, Cecchi Gori, filed for bankruptcy.
Black Glasses sees Rome under siege from a serial killer who has strangled three prostitutes with cello rope. His latest victim is destined to be Diana, a luxury escort who frequents the hotels of Via Veneto. One night, the maniac chases her in his white van and rams her, sending her crashing into another car containing a Chinese family and the young son Chin.

Premiering in the Special Gala section of this year’s Berlinale, the latest film from Italian director Dario Argento is surprising in more ways than one. Rather than copy the style of the giallo films from the 1970s and 1980s that made him famous, his “Dark Glasses” finds ingenious ways to retain the core of the giallo while adapting to our current times.

Italian horror is most often associated with Giallo, a sub-genre containing gaudy color palettes, overly complicated plot lines, and flabbergasting reveals. While there are plenty of films within this entrancing cinema classification, Italian horror transcends this stylistic boundary. It also includes psychological terrors, ghost stories, straight-up slashers, tales about demons and the undead, and countless other varieties of nail-biting yarns.
Italian filmmaking pioneers like Mario Bava, Dario Argento, and Lucio Fulci established many of the horror conventions we've come to know and love 一 and often broke their own rules in the process. Sensible story structures are regularly sacrificed for style, mood, heightened surrealism, and...

Tsui Hark is arguably one of the most influential figures in the modern history of Hong Kong cinema, having been a major figure during the New Wave movement of the 1980s. A director, producer, and sometimes actor, Hark has conjured up a wide variety of films, ranging from action thrillers to historical epics. However, in his debut feature, “The Butterfly Murders”, the director blends genres to deliver a different flavour of wuxia film.
Fong Hongye (Lau Siu-Ming) is a wandering scholar who writes of his travels to inform the populace. One journey sees him invited to Thunder Castle, where a mysterious string of murders has been taking place at the hands of butterflies. The master of the castle, Qing Shum (Chang Kuo-Chu), hopes that Fong, along with clan leader Tien Lung (Wong Shu-Tong) and lone-wolf Green Shadow (Michelle Yim), can help solve the mystery of the murders...

The new trailer for Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho begins with Thomasin McKenzie staring at a marquee billboard for Sean Connery’s fifth James Bond movie, Thunderball. For both her and audiences, it immediately lets us know we’ve been transported into a distant—and often romanticized—past. Yet instead of Bond, the actual tone of auteur Wright’s new film evokes an entirely different style: one as trippy as the fractured image of Anya Taylor-Joy staring back at McKenzie in the mirror.
Last Night in Soho has been the long anticipated and mysterious thriller Wright and Focus Features have been teasing out for years (it was originally intended for release in September 2020 before the pandemic). We’ve only known that the filmmaker considered it his first real horror film after lightly dabbling in the genre in the otherwise satirical zombie comedy, Shaun of the Dead (2004).

7500 (Patrick Vollrath)
Patrick Vollrath’s 7500 is a one-room, one-man show. It asks you to spend 92 minutes inside the cockpit of an Airbus A319, and in intimate quarters with a young first officer who must land it back to safety once the aircraft is hijacked by a group of Islamist terrorists. It is, for the best part of its brisk running time, a stomach-churning ride that bursts with the same force and anxieties of another recent–but far superior–single-setting drama: Steven Knight’s Locke. Much like Knight’s sophomore directorial work, it seesaws between claustrophobic and expansive, a testament to how much can be achieved in...

The 1972 Giallo Who Saw Her Die? (Chi l'ha vista morire?) was Aldo Lado’s second film as director, his first being Short Night of Glass Dolls (1971). That film was a somewhat less-than-traditional Giallo, photographed inexpensively behind the Iron Curtain in the cities of Zagreb and Prague. Short Night of Glass Dolls was a complicated film that told its story in backward fashion, much in the style of the celebrated playwright Harold Pinter. It was also an unusual Giallo in the sense that its overtly exploitative sex scenes were unevenly mixed with the genre’s level of on-screen violence than European movie-thriller fans had come to expect. Lado had entered into the film business only some five years earlier, serving as the assistant director on a handful of Sergio Leone-inspired Spaghetti western knock-offs and a couple of action films, before getting the opportunity to work with the...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “The Terror: Infamy” Episode 6, “Taizo.”]
Monday’s episode of “The Terror: Infamy” finally tells the backstory of the ghost known as Yuko (Kiki Sukezane), who has been haunting Chester (Derek Mio), his friends, and his family during WWII. It turns out that in 1919, Yuko traveled to Terminal Island for an arranged marriage to Hideo Furuya (Eiji Inoue), but when she reveals she’s already pregnant by another man, he casts her out. Unable to care for her baby boy properly, she gives Taizo — now the grown-up Chester — away and kills herself by leaping off a bridge. The tragic circumstances surrounding her death creates an onnen, or a wild hunger, in her as she becomes the unsatisfied spirit known as the yurei.
While Yuko’s origin story explains why she’s been sticking around after her death, hints of her state of mind have been present from the start… in her clothing. Costume designer J.R. Hawbaker...

Hawbaker...

After breaking out in a big way thanks to the award-winning film “Call Me By Your Name,” director Luca Guadagnino has made some interesting career choices. Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key Light: Gonzalez’s Queer Giallo a Dicey Mélange
Love as an overwhelming, all-consuming fire seems to be the central conceit of Yann Gonzalez’s sophomore film Knife+Heart, a dizzying homage to Giallo cinema of the 1970s. Utilizing Vanessa Paradis in what might be her most enjoyable performance since Patrice Leconte’s The Girl on the Bridge (1999), Gonzalez sends us back to the seedy side of Paris in 1979, where a frazzled blonde lesbian producer of gay porn is inspired by the murder of one of her actors to embark on a more ambitious project by using the incident for her next film.…...

With the elongated awards season behind us, it’s time to turn our attention to the 2019 cinematic offerings and this month is a doozy. Featuring some of the greatest films we saw on the festival circuit in the last year as well as a few hugely promising new releases, it’s a varied, impressive slate. There’s also one film that I full-heartedly despised and couldn’t bear to mention, but other writers here feel on the other end of the spectrum, so it should at least provoke some heated discussion this month.
Matinees to See: Greta (3/1), The Hole in the Ground (3/1), Woman at War (3/1), The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (3/1), Leaving Neverland (3/3 & 3/4), Triple Frontier (3/6), Gloria Bell (3/8) Two Plains & a Fancy (3/8), The Mustang (3/15), The Eyes of Orson Welles (3/15), The Aftermath (3/15), The Hummingbird Project (3/15), Ramen Shop (3/22), Hotel Mumbai (3/22), The Highwaymen (3/29)

Premiering at Cannes Film Festival last year was Knife + Heart, the second feature-length directorial effort from Yann Gonzalez, a former member of M83. Starring Vanessa Paradis as a ’70s gay porn producer, her productions soon get stalled when a murderer starts stalking those involved. Ahead of a March release, the new U.S. trailer and poster have arrived from Altered Innocence.
Rory O’Connor said in his review, “There is a movie within the movie Knife + Heart and it boasts the slightly euphemistic title of Homocidal (although I prefer the working title: Anal Fury). It is, in fact, being filmed as we watch, along with a number of other similarly lewd movies. Homocidal is the latest production of Far West Films, a fictional queer softcore porn studio that acts as the focus of Knife + Heart, a delightfully icky horror movie seeped in beautiful Giallo homage that is the second feature...
