It was bearable, until it turned into a musical
Top_Dawg_Critic28 September 2020
It had it's moments of chuckles, and was a nice parody of "The Purge", but when it turned into a song and dance musical, it got annoying and unbearable. Not sure who'd bright idea that was, but had that been cut out, with the shorter run time, it would've been watchable. Never mind all the bogus reviews pretty much all the ones above a 7. I guess the producers lost faith in the movie as well to resort to these tactics. If you're going to watch it, just FFWD past the useless song and dance parts. It's a generous 5/10 from me

A poor man's superbad
chrismays21 September 2020
This movie initially appears to be a mix of The Purge and Project X. All substances (including alcohol) are only legal for one night a year, and the main character wants to ask his lifelong crush, the principals daughter, to prom. Hijinks ensue.

This premise would have worked infinitely better if it centered around a major holiday weekend, like St Pattys day and just ditched this ridiculous premise of prohibition 364 days of the year. Other than the movie's title and the central even of the movie, the premise is not really explored or developed at all. Many locations are a bar, fully stocked with glass shooters, with PBR neon signs in the window, but drinking only occurs once a year? The limo driver is an obvious burnout taking advantage of the night yet it's his one night a year to do this? Moms drink wine exactly like the do most afternoons already. It was actually pretty fun to pick out these obvious situations throughout the movie.

On to the movie itself. It was absolutely hilarious. Vince Vaughn kills it whenever he is on screen. He is so funny that I was dying laughing at most of his scenes. Skylar was a pretty good main character. He has a lot of funny moments along with his best friend and their modern day Fogle (fake ids are wristbands to the party).

This movie has plenty of jokes, physical comedy and funny moments. Overall this movie is a forgettable coming of age film. If you already have Hulu I would keep this movie in mind and watch it one evening.

Like a scorpion on a toaster
nogodnomasters12 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
All drugs concluding alcohol has been outlawed. One day a year for 12 hours people 18 and over are allowed to drink and do drugs legally. The film centers on high school seniors going to a Binge party.

The production starts as a spoof on "The Purge." It moves into a Harold and Kumar film and ends up as Scott Pilgrim. It does have some funny scenes slightly less than sophomoric. Teens envy parents who drank wine from a box and had pink alcohol with an umbrella in it, getting loaded and having sex with strangers with a foreign accent. Filmed in Syracuse, NY the date rape capital of the US.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

It works

As a spoof, I think it works. It is silly but not over the top silly. It provides the brainless escapism that we need sometimes.

Not the comedy version of The Purge
Nightmarelogic28 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This wants very much to be a comedy version of "The Purge'. You know one night a year where everyone is free to drink and drug with little to know consequence. However it quickly turns into a bad teenage farce where a group of guys try to get to a party where one of them wants to ask out a girl and another just wants to have one last night with his best friend who is going off to college without him. While the third wants to prove he is just as cool as his older brother in the party game of legend. They are all being chased by the Principal of their school and the father of the girl one of them is desperate to ask out to prom. This all sounds like fun but it isn't really because it is all the typical hijinks of this kind of comedy and the most interesting thing is the background idea which is only hinted at. The one day a year party. While "The Purge" and its sequels and tv shows relishes in the concept "The Binge" just uses it as a back drop to gets a bunch of people on a journey from one place to another. In all honestly it is rather disappointing.

Much better than a 4.5
plhughes-4303128 August 2020
It's actually comedy at this point how people rate these types of films so poorly. If the comedy if not for you than move on. No need to try and butcher a film. Some good laughs and easy to watch. Who doesn't love that. Enjoy.

Whoever made this movie have no understanding of drugs or comedy.
unicornftus30 July 2021
This movie is a total cringe fest. It glorifies drugs in a way that a 9 year old who has no idea what they are actually like would. All the scenes of them getting high are completely unrealistic and unfunny. They eat a TON of magic mushroom "tacos" that are really burritos, and are wasted for like... 30 minutes? They'd be high for at least 12 hours.

It's just a garbage copy of The Purge, which already has a completely unrealistic premise from the very start. It is completely impossible to stop people from being violent and especially from doing drugs. Prohibition is proven to only make things worse, and allowing one day a year to go nuts isn't going to fix jack.

I literally didn't laugh once during this movie. The 3 main characters are all bad, but "Hags" is absolutely unbearable. Bad acting, bad joke delivery.

Unoriginal premise but thoroughly enjoyable
biggabeard29 August 2020
Funny and goes down easy. Typical losers need to get to the party after high school story that has been done a million times. The movie does a good job of it though and is thoroughly enjoyable with a lot of laugh out loud moments and some unique takes on the premise.

Who had to blow Morgan Freeman to get him to be associated with any part of this abortion of a film?

"The Binge and Purge"
Kamurai2510 September 2020
Really good watch, could watch again, and can recommend.

This is a surprisingly good movie, and maybe that's because I went in ready to hate it. This is "The Purge", but with drugs and alcohol, or imagine Rumspringa on steroids. I'm definitely not the demographic for this, but when a movie is put together so well, the subject matter is almost secondary.

Skyler Gisondo does a decent job, he's one of those guys that shows up in bit parts, but this shows he can lead a movie.

Eduardo Franco might have been the only one I know of that could have landed the delivery of his role and even then it's almost a throw away character. Grace Van Dien is little more than "lead cute girl", and Vince Vaughn is probably the best acting in this, which is your red flag right there. Even if you think he's funny, I don't imagine his fans saying he's a great actor.

It's not the character delivery, or the character based writing....or even really the plot that makes this worth a watch. It is almost entirely the production value. They probably could have gotten any 5 dingbats to play the main parts with limited elevation of characters and we still would have gotten a good movie.

Honestly, what makes this movie great is that someone handed a good director a poor to mediocre scene and they figured out how to shoot it so it was vibrant and engaging and entertaining, and as the scenes get increasingly ridiculous, they kept it refreshing.

The broadway show musical in the middle of it (not really a spoilers, you'll see) alone is a worthy enough joke to watch this.

The movie is funny, I'm pretty sure it's not good, but it's definitely worth a laugh.

Not even stupid entertaining.
bucky71630 August 2020
Not even stupid entertaining. Worst movie Vince Vaughn has been a part of. Maybe it would've been better if it was about drug binges for adults it could've been better.

Not sure where the low eating comes from...
justin-maddox29 August 2020
I love this genre of movie and this offering is on par with other recent entrants..Project X, Booksmart, Good Boys, etc. Vince Vaughn is on point in his comedic roots. Skyler Gisondo delivers am elevation of his character from Santa Clarita Diet, and Eduardo Franco (from Booksmart) takes his opportunity to steal the spotlight. I was unfamiliar with Dexter Darden before this film, but he is the heart and soul of the film. Awesome spin and an original idea!!

I tried. I've been so desperate for a a good, stupid comedy. I watched it through to the end hoping it would get better. But this was dumbest movie. Don't even try, You're better off just watching the trailer.

Lots of Fun
aigoalies2 September 2020
The story line is pretty typical for a comedy movie with some silly moments and some cringe scenes, but overall I thought this was a very fun comedy. The jokes land well and Vince Vaughn is excellent especially in the locker room. Overall would definitely recommend if you want a good laugh and a fun watch.

Just like other new movies, beautiful pictures, a lot of exciting music(but not the great ones), and exaggerated acting.

Fine movie, nothing special

If you're looking for a movie with a few laughs this will do the trick. Nothing special about the movie, a few funny parts, kind of goes off the rails at the end

Thr white kid has been at least 30 teenager movies it's time he moves on. The black kid is at least 28 shaving his facial hair and pretending he's 17 this is a pathetic attempt of 2 30 year olds. Seeming mature cause they are. But taking money & giving up integrity for a quick gig. Truly sad & Hollywood will never stop doing this

Skylar Gisondo is the saving grace of this movie
hayleyiam28 August 2020
This movie is great if you need a late-night laugh! Like The Purge, but filled with ridiculousness. The three lead boys guarantee laughs, but especially Skylar Gisondo. Give him any role and he truly delivers!

This movie blows...it has terrible writing with lots of yelling and slapstick humor. Not done well, even for a dumb stoner comedy. How did this film get made!?! Do not waste your time.

It's a sneaky good spoof film if you're paying the least bit attention.
dan_counts1 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, so this isn't a straight up spoof of The Purge movies, and thankfully it isn't. There are loving spoofs to The Purge, Falling Down, Disney Musicals, Pulp Fiction, Scarface, Cheech and Chong, The Usual Suspects, and one that kind made me think of The Deer Hunter meets Harold and Kumar Go To Whitecastle. Which is the sign of a good spoof movie, not the pablum dreck that has been called a spoof movie in the last 20 years (Meet the Spartans, Disaster Movie, etc).

Does it have it's issues? Of course it does, but I don't think the issues are really so huge as for people to crap all over it with the ratings driving it down to 4.4. Skyler Gisondo, Dexter Darden and Eduardo Franco bring the right amount of teen nerdiness to the party, Vince Vaughn as Principal Carlsen is hilarious. Do I wish they would have had a bit more character development for Grace Van Dien's character, yeah, I think it would have made the end result between her character and Skyler's a bit more satisfying but it wasn't horrid.

As for the spoofs.....just so people don't think I was doing as much drugs....here goes.

1. The Purge - Obviously the voice over about all alcohol and narcotics being legal along with all the accompanying video creating the main conceit of a 12 hour period where are all alcohol and narcotics are legal..

2. Falling Down - This is the Principal Carlsen arc, but he ends up at a house getting naked, then beating up teens for their drugs while still talking like he is occupying a moral high ground all while looking for his daughter.

3. Disney musicals - A huge musical number about 80 percent through with a brilliant song about going on a bender.

4. Pulp Fiction - When they bring the cow back from the dead with an injection.

5. Cheech and Chong, well more specifically when they are sucking down on a PCP laced spliff, just everything about that scene was a pick your favorite Cheech and Chong movie.

6. Scarface - the end, especially Dexter's monologue.....priceless!!!!

7. The Deer Hunter meets Harold and Kumar Go To Whitecastle - In some taco place where the tacos are filled with Magic Mushrooms with a crowd gathered around and cheering them on.

I know there are other scenes that I couldn't place the movie they were spoofing, but isn't that the point? To actually spoof something you love instead of just throwing a random thought in there because it's part of the zeitgeist? Not an All Time Great but it does have some sneaky brilliance to it.

Hulu's content is definitely getting better.
rdoubleoc1 October 2020
So, they had Solar Opposites (a solid 9 or a maybe 10), and now they're starting to have some pretty good movies. This is one of them.

To be fair, the miniseries with James Franco was good too, and I think they did recently have another good movie, but I can't think of it so maybe I'm mistaken. Either way, this is a pretty good comedy. It's sort of along the lines of the stuff Netflix has been making (Game Over comes to mind).

Pretty good, especially during a pandemic.

Morgan Freeman Is Not The Narrator
damianphelps29 March 2023
A movie for simpletons, by simpletons and this simpleton enjoyed it!

Vince Vaughn quietly works his way through the movie like Robin Hood, stealing from his co-stars and giving it to the audience. He is sensational.

The other key members of the cast deliver well. I did note that Skylar is well on his way to being type cast as he only seems to play one character.

There are definite low points in the film with some of the jokes simply tragic. These shortcomings are made up for by some top notch funny moments.

The Binge is an amusing movie that will deliver a laugh but it should have never delivered a sequel :)
