Anthony Nti's Good Night is a brillant short film, which deservedly won several awards such as the International Competition at Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival along with Best Flemish Short at Leuven International Short Film Festival and the Audience Award - Best Belgian Student Short at Ghent International Film Festival. And certainly there are still many honours to come.
The plot of this dramatic story takes place in contemporary Ghana and focuses on two youngsters: Prince and Mathilda. Their ordinary existence is interrupted by the appearance of a stranger, mysterious man, who calls himself Bogah. He seems to be friendly and offers kids a meal. Distrustful at first, they finally agree. This is the genesis of the story that takes place over one long, intense day.
The 20 minutes lenght film has a good pace, the camera moves in intersting way, it is vibrant and lively. It touches on some important social topic likewise. But its greatest strenghts are the young actors, Prince Agortey and Matilda Enchil who gave an convincing performance, as well as acting delivered by Goua Robert Grovogui, who plays Bogah. Though his character's intentions are not entirely clear, and he changes it out of the sudden. Part of the fault lies in the flaws of the script. Some plot solutions are obvious and predictable, others are not properly motivated. But such small mistakes happens to everyone at the beginning of their carrer, so let's be lenient.

Greetings again from the darkness. A group of kids chasing a chicken through the streets and back alleys for the privilege of choosing teams is the light-hearted way the movie opens. It may only be a 20 minute film, but that chicken chase provides one of the very few moments we aren't filled with a sense of dread. Director Anthony Nti and writer Chingiz Karibekov deliver a tension-packed short film based in Ghana that plays to the greatest fear of any parent.
"My mom will kill me" are words uttered by most every kid at some point during childhood, and here it's Prince (Prince Agortay) who is dodging the wrath of his mother after sneaking off to play soccer with his friend Matilda (Matilda Echnil). Prince is a quiet kid, unsure of the world, while Matilda is outgoing and adventurous. It's Matilda's brash attitude that leads the two into the "cool" car driven by a stranger. Bogah (Goua Robert Grovoqui) is a local nickname for anyone not from the area - in other words, he's a foreigner.
Enticing the kids with a buffet and trip to the sea, Bogah clearly has unsavory intentions with the kids, but as viewers, we can't quite get a grip. He seems to really like the kids, but there is an inevitability that engulfs each scene. Most of the film has elapsed by the time we see where things are headed, and by then we share a knot in the gut with the kids. The title of the film translates to "Good night", and until the end, we aren't sure exactly what form of the phrase applies.

This was such a refreshing film to watch, it's filled with energy, it moves so naturally. It touches upon important social topics but its power lies in its ability to catch moments of beauty and encapsulate the atmosphere of the moment. The two child actors are absolutely amazing, they manage to capture the viewer's attention and draw them into the world of the film, and the music, even though electronic, plays so beautifully into some of the moments, creating a flow between the natural and the cultural.

I had the pleasure of watching this film while judging for my film festival in Hollywood. This film blew me away. I just had to come online and give a review. The kids are so talented and the filmmakers did a superb job at storytelling.
