Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. It's worth quoting the latest (perhaps the last?) gnomic pronouncements from Margaret "The Log Lady" Lanterman (the late Catherine E. Coulson), speaking via phone to Deputy Sheriff Tommy "Hawk" Hill (Michael Horse), in full: "Hawk—electricity is humming. You hear it in the mountains and rivers. You see it dance among the seas and stars. And glowing around the moon. But in these days, the glow is dying. What will be in the darkness that remains? The Truman brothers are both true men. They are your brothers. And the others, the good ones, who have been with you. Now the circle is almost complete. Watch and listen to the dream of time and space. It all comes out now, flowing like a river. That which is and is not.

Nearly eight years ago, Madonna went up against Malawi’s highest court to win the right to adopt then-four-year-old Mercy James.
Fast forward to today, the songstress opened the country’s first-ever pediatric surgery and intensive care center, which she named The Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care, after her now-11-year-old daughter.
At the opening ceremony on Tuesday, Madonna recalled the emotional three-and-a-half year journey she went through to call Mercy her own after she had successfully adopted son David Banda in 2006.
“I met Mercy soon after I met my son David, but they were living in different orphanages.

Of the countless moments in “La La Land” that make you want to stand up and cheer, Ryan Gosling’s first piano solo hasn’t really been getting as much credit as it deserves. After Mia (Emma Stone) hears a few notes of a piano melody and stumbles into the bar where Sebastian is playing, Damien Chazelle captures their intense first connection in a single long take. The camera slowly moves right into Gosling’s face and then down to his hands as he passionately plays “Mia and Sebastian’s Theme” on the keys.

What’s so gob-smackingly amazing about this scene is how you suddenly realize that because the camera hasn’t cut, it must actually be Gosling doing those insane runs up and down the piano keys. And guess what? It really is. Variety...

IndieWire’s Anne Thompson, Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil, Variety’s Tim Gray and Deadline’s Pete Hammond are back for Part 2 of their Oscar predictions discussion; this time focusing on the craft and short film categories.
The awards editors address the possibility that following Donald Trump’s Muslim Ban, Asghar Farhadi’s “The Salesman” could win the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar. “A lot of people are going to vote for [it] as a political statement,” says Hammond.
There’s anger at Trump from the global film community — and Farhadi decided not to attend the Oscars. The gang of four spoke about what kind of statement the Academy might want to make with their Best Picture winner.

Every year, IndieWire looks beyond the countless top 10 lists written by critics to widen the field. We turn to friends and colleagues in the independent film community — programmers, distributors, publicists and others — to give them the opportunity to share their favorite films and other media from the past 12 months. We also invited them to share their resolutions and anticipated events for 2017.
The Best of 2016: IndieWire’s Year in Review Bible

I’m limiting my list to films that had Us and Canadian theatrical releases in 2016. I saw far more than 10 this year that I liked, but if I have to be brutal, I’ll limit it to the films that lifted me.
1. “Moonlight”
2. “Julieta”
3. “Toni Erdmann”
4. “Cemetery of Splendor”
5. “Arrival”
6. “Fences”
7. “13th”
8. “American Honey”
9. “Things to Come”
10. “Moana”

Ever wonder what’d happen if Nicholas Sparks somehow got his hands on a Stephen King script, and went all “sappy love story” on it while butchering the intended dread? That, in a sense, is Passengers – a creeper-feature that somehow blossoms into romantic sci-fi schmaltz about a girl who’s literally forced into loving someone.
What a great message. If your crush doesn’t reciprocate feelings (or is catatonic), tamper with her life (or transport pod) and trick her into starry-eyed lustiness. Wrong and right don’t matter when it comes to love! She’ll come around in the end, because you (the male) dictate all scenarios. Kinda like if Misery gender-flipped and went celestial, where James Caan ends up loving Kathy Bates anyway.
Before even attempting a plot recap, I’m blanketing the rest of my review in a Spoiler Warning. There’s no way to address gaping plot...

Fairy Tales are also cautionary tales, a way to teach morals and values to children at a time when the majority of the populace couldn’t read or write. It wasn’t until the last four centuries or so when we began writing it all down and solidifying the variations. Even today, people take the classics and reinterpret them for new generations, bringing in modern themes and issues, making them more relevant.
The cautionary tale to take from The Huntsman: Winter’s War is that you have to have something interesting to say. The preceding film, Snow White and the Huntsman, gave us a revisionist Snow White in the form of plucky Kristen Stewart, a modern day action heroine that made her a proactive player in the classic German tale.
Given behind the scenes shenanigans, Stewart was out of the proposed sequel with the emphasis shifting to the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth...

Love conquers all - well, except Pokémon Go, that is. The smash hit augmented reality smartphone game has officially usurped dating app Tinder in the Android app store, according to SimilarWeb, an Internet analysis company. The Nintendo game - which somewhat revives the iconic Game Boy staple - has been installed by over five precent of Android users since its release just last week, SimilarWeb said. In comparison, Tinder is only on two percent of U.S. Android users' smartphones. In addition, SimilarWeb said that over 60 percent of those who downloaded Pokémon Go are using it daily, meaning that nearly...

Looking for good books about the movies to read? We've got a bumper selection of recommendations right here...
A confession. I actually started writing this article in 2013, and the reason you've only reading it now is that I've made sure I've read every book on this list, save for one or two where I've marked otherwise. As such, what you're getting is a very personal list of recommendations. Each of these books has at least something to it that I think is of interest to someone wanting to learn more about film - or just enjoy stories of movie making.
I've tended to avoid picture books, with one exception, as these ones I've chosen are all intended to be chock-full of words, to relax with at the end of a long day. Which is what I did. There are one or two notable omissions, as I'm still...

A lot has happened to Rich Wilkerson Jr. in the past few years.
As a Miami-based pastor, he was leading a vibrant group of young congregants when he met Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West. They began coming to his church services, often having deep conversations with him afterwards.
Something clicked, and he became close friends with the couple – so close that they asked him to officiate their wedding.
But Wilkerson, 31, never thought of himself as a celebrity pastor.
"My whole message is that it doesn't matter who you are," Wilkerson tells People, "the message is still the same. It's...

From title changes to the addition of rubber demons, here's a selection of some rather strange movie alterations from cinema history...
The course of film production seldom runs smooth, and even the greatest films can suffer from all sorts of behind-the-scenes problems. For a very recent example, just look at Fantastic Four, a film with which suffered the kind of difficult production that will no doubt inspire books on the subject in the near future.
At any rate, the movies on this list are all examples of strange (and sometimes last-minute) changes, often imposed by producers or executives. In some unfortunate cases, the changes haven't been particularly beneficial, but one alteration turned out to be a pioneering moment in cinema history.
In every instance, the changes are unusual, surprising, or sometimes downright baffling ...

Love conquers all for Noah Galloway.
On Monday night, Galloway, 33, was surprised by his girlfriend Jamie Boyd after he dominated the samba with his professional partner, Sharna Burgess, 29, to Darius Rucker's "Homegrown Honey" on Dancing with the Stars.
"It was a huge surprise – probably the best surprise I've ever had," Galloway told People backstage of Boyd showing up. "It was amazing."
The double amputee and Army veteran cherished last night's performance and had dedicated the dance to Boyd – who had been away in Montana for the last six months, training to become an Army Reserve specialist – before he realized she was there.

She’s been promoting the heck out of her new album The Pinkprint, and last night (December 16) Nicki Minaj was in the house for “Crwn: A Conversation with Elliott Wilson and Nicki Minaj.” The “Anaconda” rapper wore a snazzy fur hooded top as she greeted fans and posed for photos ahead of her much-anticipated interview.
Over the weekend, Nicki stopped by SiriusXM’s Shade 45 studio to discuss her thoughts on the rivalry between her pals Lil Wayne and Birdman. "We're good. Love conquers all. I do know that, no matter what, we're a family. We're not always the best of friends and chummy chummy, but we're a family and we love each other underneath it all."
Nicki Minaj: Poised to sell 160,000 Copies of The Pinkprint in First Week!
She added, "I know that Wayne and Baby love each other, and I know they’re going to resolve anything that needs to be resolved.

Before I met my wife, my longest relationship lasted a span of only three months. I wasn’t afraid of commitment; I was too committed too early. I fell fast and hard. Every time. But that doesn’t mean I never went through the typical relationship bumps in the road. I fought with plenty of exes about normal things – jealousy, dishonesty, etc. And now my wife and I fight about plenty of the same things, but we handle it, just like every other successful couple. In the spirit of tumultuous relationships, this list looks at the definitive relationship dramas. These are films that focus on one or more romantic relationships. These aren’t just “falling in love” movies. These are movies that dissect some side of a relationship that helps to drive the plot. So, without further ado, let’s join hands on this journey together.

Christopher Nolan made Memento, but he also made The Dark Knight Rises. Great filmmakers can make bad movies: This is not a particularly complicated equation. And Nolan's new space melodrama Interstellar is not a particularly complicated movie. The science is elaborate and insane, but the emotional stakes are simple: Father loves daughter, father saves humanity. But Nolan is one of our plottiest filmmakers. (Most films have three acts; Nolan's movies usually have at least six, usually out of order and/or overlapping.) I attempted to explain the plot of Interstellar, but even I ran up against some impenetrable cosmo-logic. Some...

Toronto - One of the most original interpretations of the music biopic in recent years was 2007's "I'm Not There," in which no less than six actors played different versions of Bob Dylan. Directed by Todd Haynes, the film used the different actors as a way of getting to the essential truth about an artist renowned for reinventing himself. The co-writer of that film was Oren Moverman, and now he's the co-writer of "Love & Mercy," a beautiful new movie that once again refuses to fall into the formula that hobbles so many biopics of any kind. The cliches of the genre are so pervasive that Jake Kasdan's "Walk Hard" essentially destroyed the entire form for me. Ultimately, I think the best way to approach any biopic is to pick a moment that you feel illuminates the subject in a way that allows you to narrow in, focus, and tell...

Watch Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan Sing While Driving Recklessly in ‘The Last Five Years’ (Video)
Love conquers all, even traffic laws. Fresh off its triumphant debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was bought by TWC-Radius before it even premiered, “The Last Five Years” now begins its marketing campaign. Luckily, that won't be too hard for the Richard Lagravenese-directed film, since it's a musical starring fan favorite Anna Kendrick and up-and-comer dreamboat Jeremy Jordan (“Smash,” “Newsies”). Also read: Why Anna Kendrick Is Done With Musicals: ‘Singing Is F-cking Hard’ Of course, it's not exactly as happy a tale as the video below suggests. The Giver
Written for the screen by Michael Mitnick and Robert B. Weide
Directed by Phillip Noyce
USA, 2014
The Giver doesn’t want people thinking too much about its heavier themes, so it answers any nagging questions with the Hollywood truism, “Love conquers all.” That’s fine… if the love story works. Sadly, this adaptation of Lois Lowry’s iconic novel focuses so much on the past that there’s no time to care about the present. Despite an interesting premise and some lovely visuals, a clunky script dooms The Giver to the ever-expanding list of tedious ‘young adult’ adaptations.
At its heart, The Giver is a story about the power of subjective memory. More specifically, how recollections from the past can influence our thoughts, emotions and actions in the future. Our young hero, Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), along with his best friends, Fiona (Odeya Rush) and Asher (Cameron Monaghan), live...

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the season 2 finale, “Declaration of Independence.” If you haven’t watched, proceed at your own risk.
To be completely honest, Revolution’s second season was what its first season should have been: dark, gritty, and edgy. If you have a proclivity for the smaller, indie films, then you won’t want to miss Le Week-end. This charming film opens at the Plaza Frontenac Cinema in St. Louis this Friday, March 28th.
Academy Award winner Jim Broadbent (Iris, Topsy-turvy, Another Year) and Lindsay Duncan (About Time, Alice In Wonderland, Mansfield Park) give exquisite performances as Nick and Meg, a long-married British couple revisiting Paris for the first time since their honeymoon in an attempt to rekindle their relationship.
During a two-day escapade, diffident, wistful Nick and demanding, take-charge Meg careen from harmony to disharmony to resignation and back again as they take stock of half a lifetime of deep tenderness – and even deeper regret. A surprise invitation from Nick’s old friend Morgan (Jeff Goldblum), an amusingly boorish American academic with a fancy Parisian address, soon leads them to an unexpectedly hopeful vision of what their love and marriage might still become.

We head back to the 80s and 90s to look at eight famous battles between directors and studio executives over a movie's final cut...
If filmmaking is a compromise between art and commerce, then the final cut is often the point in the process where the tug-of-war between the two becomes the most intense. In their desire to make a film more profitable - often after feedback from preview screenings - studio executives will sometimes request re-edits or the shooting of additional scenes. And occasionally, when directors attempt to resist those changes for whatever reason, the resulting tension between director and studio can reach breaking point.
To illustrate the different ways these tussles over a film's final cut can play out, we're heading back to the 80s and 90s. In some instances, the films that emerged from the editing room were considered to be influential triumphs.

New York, Oct 23: When your marriage is on the rocks, people give advice like stay for the kids or love conquers all. Such advice generally falls flat, so try not giving these tips to warring couples.
Huffingtonpost.com shares few more pieces of marriage advice that one should not give:

- Stay for the kids.
- Love conquers all.
- Just pray for him, honey!
- It can be fixed. Everything is fixable.
- It will get better.
- You can't back out now.

Amy Poehler's little brother Greg Poehler is following in his sister's footsteps, entering the TV comedy business and taking his work to her longtime network, NBC.
On Tuesday (Oct. 8), the network acquired the new half-hour comedy series "Welcome to Sweden," executive producer by the siblings and starring Greg. Amy will make a cameo appearance, along with Will Ferrell, Aubrey Plaza and Kiss frontman Gene Simmons.
"Welcome to Sweden," created by Greg and based on the formal lawyer's personal life, tells the fish-out-of-water story of New York accountant Bruce (Poehler), who falls in love with a Swedish girl named Emma (Josephine Bornebusch) and follows her to Sweden. Last week’s episode of Nikita was shocking on multiple levels. First, it dared to kill off a fan-favorite character. Second, it dared to burn down its own house. Nikita has always been a trigger-happy show and has dared to kill off high profile characters before (R.I.P. Percy), but killing one of its white-knight heroes was earth-shattering. In addition, we all knew the days of Division being able to operate as a clandestine force for good would be short-lived with all those allegedly reformed agents chaffing under the imposed-constraints. We just did not suspect that it would be this short. Division literally imploded once the recruits figured out that their own government was coming to exterminated each and everyone of them, effectively reneging on the deal to give each a pardon in exchange for their service in tracking down the rogue Division agents.

Love conquers all, despite the odds, in the tune. Long after the butterflies should be gone, they are still fluttering in love land for lead singer Hayley Williams. Produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen. “Paramore” comes out April 9. “Now” peaked at #13 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart and No. 16 on Billboard’s Rock Songs.

Vampires and werewolves are so 2012. This year is all about aliens — specifically, the “Souls” of Stephenie Meyer’s The Host, a parasitic race that has nearly completed its invasion of Earth. There’s just one thing standing in their way: Human girl Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan of Atonement and Hanna), who won’t go down without a fight… even after her brain becomes home for one of the Souls.
Learn more about the world of The Host in this exclusive behind-the-scenes video, which features the Twilight author and the film’s stars explaining why their film is a must-see even...

Only 364 days until it’s Valentine’s Day again!! However will we pass the time?
By watching the trailer for this upcoming remake of About Last Night over and over again, of course. The original 1986 film — the title of which ended with an ellipsis that’s been nixed for the new version — starred Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Jim Belushi, and Elizabeth Perkins as four singles in Chicago who became two couples in Chicago. In the 2014 version, Kevin Hart and Regina Hall step in for Belushi and Perkins, while Michael Early and Joy Bryant take the places of Lowe and Moore.

Chicago – “Brazil” is more than a movie. The story behind the film’s tumultuous production and release became nearly as essential to its history and arguably more so than the film itself. The special feature on the new Criterion release, “The Battle of Brazil” is a fascinating examination of expectation, ego, and commerce vs. art that all movie fans must see. And, of course, the movie is an undeniable sci-fi masterpiece.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
When “Brazil,” Terry Gilliam’s futuristic satire about bureaucracy, screened for audiences before its release, studio heads called it a disaster. They took it away from Gilliam and mangled it. And then the real fun began. Most of the special features on the Criterion version of “Brazil” center on the drama around its release. They even go so far as to include the “Love Conquers All” version of the movie, the 96-minute cinematic crime (Gilliam’s cut runs...

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre releases for December.
Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) 20th Century Fox Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Six-year-old Hushpuppy (fearless newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis) lives in the “Bathtub,” a southern Louisiana bayou community far removed from the civilized world. Her father Wink (Dwight Henry), a poor fisherman, keeps her at arm’s length but ensures her well-being within the cultural confines of their rough-and-tumble society. Seen through the eyes of the feisty Hushpuppy, the lines between myth and reality are blurred. An impending storm coincides with the melting of the arctic ice caps (and the thawing of some mythical creatures), which changes the world of the Bathtub forever. This heartbreaking little fable came out of nowhere last summer after building some positive buzz on the festival circuit. Shot on 16mm film for under $2 million, Beasts is a true independent film: a fiercely original and moving...

Something nasty and futuristic is afoot in Terry Gilliam's Brazil.
The Criterion Edition of Terry Gilliam’s landmark 1985 cult, sci-fi-flavored classic movie Brazil, filled with its countless supplements and the infamous “Love Saves the Day” edition of the film, finally makes its Blu-ray debut!
Universal issued a no-frills Blu-ray edition of Brazil in July, 2011 which we favorably reviewed at the time, but we can’t deny that we’re pretty excited to check out Criterion’s Blu-ray version.. This new edition ports over all the materials from the company’s masterful, extras-laden 1999 multi-disc DVD release which was generally considered to be the godfather of all Criterion and studio special editions to come.
Written by Gilliam, Charles McKeown (both of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) and Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love), Brazil remains Gilliam’s greatest directing/writing accomplishment, a perfect amalgam of his Monty Python roots,...
