Economizing Experts
JordanThomasHall12 August 2019
Bud and Lou are skillfully working at Globe Efficiency Experts, Inc. where Lou battles a filing cabinet. Successful businessman J.J. Wentworth (Herbert Heyes) talks with company owner Henry Dunn (Theodore von Eltz) about the out-of-control spending habits of his daughters Doris (Jean Willes) and Peggy (Lucille Barkley). He asks to send an efficiency expert to sternly, frugally manage them while he's gone on a month-long business trip to Europe. Mr. Dunn assigns the job to Bud and Lou. Doris and Peggy overhear the plan at home and plot to run them off. At first they are very kind to the boys and seemingly embrace economizing. Doris bakes an inedible cake then phones for an upscale dress shop send two models and some fine dresses. One is a trick dress that they pretend Lou tore, with it being forgiven if they buy the other dresses. The girls have Bud and Lou take them out where Lou comically, unknowingly spends big at a nightclub casino where mayhem breaks out. There are direct references to The Three Stooges' 1950 "Three Hams on Rye" (cutting lettuce on a clothesline for a salad and eating an inedible cake) and I Love Lucy's 1951 "Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her" (mistaking a jar of facial cream for a totally opposite substance). This is prevalent in the second season, especially in the case of the Stooges. "The Abbott and Costello Show" also visibly influenced iconic sitcoms such as "The Dick Van Dyke Show", and Jerry Seinfeld stated it was the inspiration for "Seinfeld".
