After an one off appearance two years earlier, actor Stephen Lewis reprises his role as Smiler and joins the regular cast as the man with the sunny disposition!
Smiler's dog has died and worse still his wife has repeatedly asked Smiler if he loved her after 33 years of marriage. Of course he pretended to be asleep but now the dog has died they had no one else to talk to. She sold their house and gone off to Australia.
Foggy passes himself as the man with steel fingers as he was known to the natives to a stranger in a cafe as he recounts his wartime stories.
Later on the trio see Smiler looking depressed and decide to find him lodgings. They feel he would be ideal to stay with Marina as Howard mentioned she wants a man around the house but once Howard gets a whiff that Smiler might stay with Marina, he gets insanely jealous. Smiler ends up lodging with Nora Batty, poor Smiler.
As a young toddler I used to enjoy watching Stephen Lewis as Blakey in On the Buses and his hound dog expression is a nice fit for the show.
