OK B movie
wrlang11 November 2006
Slip is about a girl that not only talks with dead people, but also learns whet they know and takes revenge for them in the ways you like to see in a movie. Not a bad concept, it just needed to be played out a little better with the casting and dialog. The characters were just short of being believable but that may have had more to do with the direction. The dialog was a little uncharacteristic of the characters. A couple of interesting special effects, but not too much of that either. Some good location scenery and cinematography seemed well done. Some of the scenes were a little off. If you're looking for a solid B movie with an interesting plot, then this is for you.

Intriguing and ambitious, but some serious plot flaws
alicante2224 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
On the grand scheme of things, and when looked at on a level par with big budget movies of a similar genre, it fall down with some weak script points, direction and acting (although I personally thought that both Cal & Tre did the best with what they had).

But with a miniscule budget and limited resources in mind, this is actually not a bad effort and perhaps deserves a higher score than I have given it.

That said, there were some flaws. From an audience point of view I was interested in the basic theme and its implementation. But certain scenes and characters added nothing to either plot or story. Poor acting (wide open eyes in every scene no matter what emotion was needed to be conveyed) from Stacey Paige (Julia) and the introduction of the evil version of Sarah, just had me wishing that they had never even been created.

I downloaded this movie from the internet, I had never heard of it, but I like movies, so I figured I would give it a go. But the first scene had me both confused, and in a mood to give it up and switch it off. It left me with the feeling as though I was watching a student movie and the director was trying to show me how different he could be by instantly shoving an odd set piece complete with introduction of the bad guy and the heroin in a desert shoot out. After forcing myself to make it to the end of this scene, Cal enters the story and it settles down to be quite enjoyable from there on in (albeit with more strange flashbacks that lead nowhere and teach us nothing) By bringing Cal and his easy going demeanor to the forefront from then on in, this movie looked on the up. His performance as a kid from the bad side of the tracks who wants to go straight (is there ever another kind?) was both sincere and entertaining. His meeting with Sarah made for a strange partnership but it kind of works. But then, every now and again she would just go off on some random 'ghosts need me' mission... including into a maternity hospital to visit a grieving husband who's wife has just died giving birth.

Where is her room? Just over there, go in... help yourself; she only just died 10 minutes ago.

Hey, I am a total stranger to you, but can I hold your baby (10 minutes old) that is your only connection to your now dead wife? Yes, sure... here you go. Do I know you? I am sorry, but this whole scene stank of needing a re-write. Where at any point would this seem feasible... no matter what connection Sarah has with the dead they were trying to show, no new dad is going to let some random, beaten up crying stranger take his kid from him like that. She came across like someone who was more likely to steal a baby than anything else.

And the finale of Sarah and Tommy's supernatural showdown was such a total anti-climax… "he made me do it…" and unneeded. His entire presence as someone who just followed Sarah around torturing anyone that she left alive could have been completely cut from the script and nothing would have been lost (except screen time) but much would have been gained (feasible plot and ending).

Where this film should have concentrated on the Cal, Tre, Sarah triangle and the struggles to overcome the wrongful accusations and the revenge that needed to be taken on those setting him up, it was dragged down by Tommy's appearances and obsession with finding out "how does she stop the voices?!" I think that a five is a good score for the film on a whole. But if the likes of the godfather and lord of the rings were to be made on the same budget, I would expect a similar result. So 10/10 for what resulted from such a small budget ($50,000 really????) but more could have been done before shooting began to make it better (i.e. the script). I would still be interested in seeing whatever they produced next though… hopefully with a bigger budget so that they can show what they can really do with some backing and with some time

I am dead people.
nogodnomasters26 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Sarah (Jill Small) sees dead people, talks to dead people, and lets dead people possess her. She carries a shotgun in case they are angry and want revenge. Her "gift" gets her involved with a group of criminals who run a chop shop.

The premise of the film was good, but the plot needed some tweaking as did the sound track. The acting was okay, the plot wasn't convincing, especially the ending.

Guide: No swearing, sex or nudity. Now available on DVD multi-packs.

God help us all

As one person commented; "The gairl(sic)in the lead was a little weak, it would have worked better if she was better looking but the rest of he cast made her seem more watchable." Does anyone else take issue with this crass remark. Since when did someones looks have anything to do with their acting skills. Also what makes think that anyone has to live up to your shallow, immature, take on life and your sexual stereotyping? I suppose you must be American.

The film was extremely well executed for the money outlaid. I feel that the script was a weak and this showed particularly in the first quarter of the film. This improved as the action commenced. Still, it seems like a teen flick with violence which leaves it without a proper audience.

The Sixth Sense this ain't...
Leofwine_draca28 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
SLIP is an indie horror/thriller about a girl who has the ability to communicate with the dead. The premise has it that spirits are able to enter the girl's body at will and thus control her for their own ends, but the way this is portrayed precludes the use of any kind of special effects so it's something of a limited production. It's not the worst thing I've seen, and the acting is at the level of a typical TV movie, but the laborious storyline really is devoid of purpose.

Slip: Well okay then!
Platypuschow26 June 2018
This obscure little supernatural thriller was made on a budget of just 50k yet it looks like a AAA movie.

It tells the story of a girl who keeps getting possessed by the dead in order for them to right wrongs in their lives. One day she is taken over by a small time car thief and it changes her life forever.

Truth is I really quite liked this, it's a well constructed well acted little movie that goes in directions I simply didn't expect. Fascinating and a fantastic demonstration that you don't need a big budget or well known names to make a competent film.

It ticks every box and only doesn't rate higher due to the highly lackluster ending. Had the ending been on par with the rest of the film this truly would have been something really special.

Regardless this is still a very good effort, consider me impressed.

The Good:

Very well made

Outstanding for its budget

The Bad:

Another protagonist I simply can't care about

Ending is a bit of a jumbled mess

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

He has a dishonest job but he has an honest soul has to be one of the dumbest lines I've ever heard in a film

Known actors take you out of the illusion, thats why movies like these work so well

Pleasantly Surprised
smmuenkel15 December 2006
Considering this is a low budget direct-to-DVD feature by first time filmmakers, I am very impressed. "Slip" is well shot and acted. The only exception being that Jill Small underplays her lead role too much. Don Turner in the lead is a standout and Hosea Simmons as the main villain steals every scene he's in. I wouldn't be surprised if these two show up and hold their own in bigger productions in the future.

The story is very interesting if not original. There are some clever moments and even a few that are quite touching. The film has a little of everything, some snappy dialog, some gore, gang violence, a little sentimentality, and supernatural themes. It's a mix of genres that is its strength and sometimes its weakness. You almost never can predict what's going to happen next and yet it feels overlong in its final reels when all the elements come together. There are also a few impressive special effects. And the music, appropriate. A fine first film for all involved.

great idea
Shamrann25 November 2006
why a grate of 7? well the idea behind the movie good, but it seems like the writer lacked the proper creativeness to Relay the idea fully to paper, and it doesn't help that the director didn't notice that the movie was missing a certain something, the scenes wherened tied together probably, the characters didn't stay in character so you don't get, for the lag of a better word, get drawn into the movie. And the certain scenes feel forced. "we need to get this into the movie, lets just put it here." But all in all a good idea, if nothing els check it out for the idea alone, the acting is slightly above average, just wish it had another director and maybe a co-writer...

Its in the details, the devil or otherwise
thomasck23 December 2011
When I view any film, I am highly aware of details, weather its Saving Private Ryan or SLIP, I am sort OCD about weapons, firearms, shooting scenes and the like.

You can tell that by the "action" scenes that someone in this production "tutored" the actors in the proper use and handling of firearms, Just look at the way Jill Small unloads/loads the revolver, and the way Hosea, Cal et al handle themselves with the weapons. Although there was not as much gun play as a true "Action" movie you could also tell that they went to the expense of getting real movie blanks, with exception of the L.A.P.D. officer in the hospital scene having a Chrome Snub Nose revolver for a duty weapon, it appears the choice of firearms was appropriate for the scenes.

I know you may be saying...a gun is a gun is a gun...but this bit a detail is important to more folks than you may know...just ask another viewer...all in all I wish they had more money to work with but for the first effort it was commendable. It would be neat to see a re-make involving some named actors incorporating some of the originals. I could see Don Turner remaining in his role as well as Hosea, but Jill Small would be replaced by Emma Stone or Kristen Stewart...Just a thought folks...give this movie a chance with an open mind and it will not disappoint.

A lot better than I expected.
jasn26 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Wow. What started off as pretty flat got better and better throughout the film. It takes a little bit for the acting to warm up, but for a B-flick it comes out pretty balanced. Nice good camera work, nice use of effects especially for the "worldy" transitions.

*****---SLIGHT SPOILER---*****

(One little thing that gets to me is when the crazy guy comes into the house near the end; when he comes up to the friend and gets her, it would have been better to see her face instead of sticking with the low shot) _____________________________

The crazy guy's acting is fantastic with a plus on that because of what he has to do at the end.

I didn't notice any plot holes; there are a few times when it might seem apparent but it ends up being justified, so it is well thought out.

I wish the makers of this great success in their future projects. For a low budget flick, these guys made the best of what they had and knew what they were doing to make a solid film.

Very creative genre mix.
dturnerjr10 November 2006
I like seeing an indie film take a genre and mix it up so that it gives an unexpected twist. Great cast of actors for it being your first film. I would recommend this film to anyone who is in love with Boy's in the Hood with a mix of The Sixth Sense. The character Tre should get best lead gangster of the year for his performance. I really liked the coloring of the desert scene. There are a lot of different ways to go in order to set the tone in the desert, and I think you guys hit the nail on the head. The story seemed to slow a bit toward the end of the second act, but it picked up quickly in the third act coming to the end. If this film is any indication of the stories the production team have in their pocket, then I can't wait for your next release. Hopefully you get a bigger budget!

Great Surprise
mmsmd998 October 2006
As someone who doesn't usually enjoy independent films, this is one that took me by surprise. I'd have to say that this is one of the most enjoyable indie films I've seen yet. It plays much like a big budget film, although you can tell that the director was limited by his budget. Regardless, it has a great look, EXCELLENT story, great acting, and is an all around fun film to watch. I like the crossing of genres... street and the supernatural. Unique and refreshing to watch. And amidst it all, it basically boils down to two people just trying to make life work, which I think anybody can relate to despite whatever movie type you are. What a PLEASANT surprise for an evening of home movie watching!

Spirits of the dead possess a young woman to right the wrongs done to them, leaving her with the knowledge and skills they had in life.
carrieclevergirl2 January 2007
This film has been "haunting" me, no pun intended. It makes you think about what things you will regret and wish you could change after you are gone. It left me with the feeling of my favorite Star Trek NG episode, "Inner Light" which explores what you would want to be remembered for, what's important in life - yet it is done with ass-kicking action and a sexy star! Budget shouldn't be a consideration when reviewing someone's art, so I am giving this an excellent rating for story, character, performance and direction. I would love to see what this director could do with a seven figure financing deal! It's refreshing to see a truly original concept make it to the screen. Support Indie cinema and tell Hollywood you are sick of sequels, remakes and rehashes. Rent this film made by a true storyteller!

...and a good time was had by all!
afan00728 November 2006
I'm not sure why some of these comments are continually harping on the script, as if the've written a film that has made it to final cut of a feature production. I congratulate the writer for getting this very interesting story to the screen. How can the same person agree that the story is cool and the characters are interesting and them say the script was weak? Where do you think the story comes from? Granted, some of the story is derivative of other material and if you saw the behind the scenes (and didn't download it for free!) then you would know that this script was written well before the sixth sense came out and WAY before Ghost Whisperer or Medium. Just shows how long it takes to get a movie finished in the truly inde. film business. And if you compare this film to other direct to video productions that have four times the budget you'll find that it stands up in image quality, story and acting much better than the majority of those films. Especially the horror gluttony that has filled the shelves of Blockbuster. So, just step back and add a little context before you start doing your Ebert and Roper thing. Those guys can't make a good movie either ;) So I'm giving it a ten just to offset the jealous and unschooled voters.

WOW, this movie really surprised me
TheRunner13 November 2006
It's not often that I get surprised by a film but as it was a slow night and blockbuster was out of every other title I was looking for i gave this film a shot. WOW, this was really a good little film. the photography was excellent, the characters well rounded and interesting, the story was an original twist on two tired genres and over all the acting was excellent. the direction was well handled and it kept the story moving. And for my money, I challenge anyone to find a scary action style movie in the hood that can pull off a sweetly sad scene like the moment in the hospital with Sarah and the baby. that takes some real skill. Hats off to the filmmakers and thanks for saving my Wednesday night.

Great first time Film
mysterymaker_998 October 2006
Loved the film, loved the acting...The guy who plays Tre was awesome, he really steals the scene. The girl in the lead was a little weak, it would have worked better if she was better looking but the rest of he cast made her seem more watchable. Still a strong showing. The photography was what really steals the show, how they got so much production value from 50 grand is amazing to me. The locations, the sets, these guys must have some relatives in the business because I could never get so much from such a small amount of money. I can see on their IMDb page that this is their first film. WOW! I look forward to future movies from these guys. Nice job!
