A worthy attempt...
ceejay9923 July 2006
This movie shows the friendship of two teenagers who find that their relationship is quickly turning into something they may not be able to handle.

Kaye has just moved to New Orleans and is befriended by Emily, a girl who is not stranger to trouble. Emily decides to take Kaye under her wing and tries to show her that life is worth enjoying.

During the course of their relationship they both realize that they have developed a dependency on one another, for lack of a better word they've fallen in love. But can Kaye, who comes from a strong religious background take the leap and follow her heart? Can Emily's strength get her to face life and stop running from her problems? By the title alone you know the characters fall in Love but the Suicide part? Well, that isn't hard to figure out but how exactly does it fit? Watch and find out...although it's low budget and the acting is much to be desired, the message is clear...live life to the fullest, love who you desire and be sure of the choices you make - you are the one who needs to live them and no one else.

Hard to say about this movie
countymd22 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say the acting is Horrible and the shooting is Really bad, too. The story line is very interesting but they have bad dialogs. They did hit on a few realistic and important points of how difficult for teens to come out of closet in today's society. Not only they have to face the pressure from society but also deal with the cut off with family economic support.

I do wish as modern as we are in today's society, people can be a bit more understanding and accepting. Life itself in today's world is as difficult as it as. There is really no need to add more pressures to people with different sexual orientation.

I kind of see how Kaye is in love with Emily but she decided to date this boy from church to avoid all the hardships and pressures in life. How ironic it is!! How Emily committed suicide then Kaye came to rescue her and broke up with her before. Yet, ten years later, Kaye married with a guy decided to commit suicide ( missing Emily?) but Emily couldn't save her this time. I don't agree with suicides at all. I do believe that there is always someone out there for each person. Even if there is none, suicide can't achieve anything at all. Being alive to keep looking is important.

Anyhow, if the acting and filming could have been better, it will be highly recommended.

Heavenly Creatures, it ain't.
Iboney7 June 2007
I loved Heavenly Creatures and make it a point to catch it whenever it is on.

So, imagine my delight when I discovered Love & Suicide while browsing NetFlix. Echoing Heavenly Creatures, an easy choice, to the top of my queue it went.

I watched it last, made myself comfy, and waited. What I thought was some crappy preview of a stoned high school student's prank film project (I laughed out loud once or twice, thinking "that just lowered the bar of straight to video") turned out to be the movie. Horrible acting, amateur direction, weak dialog. I usually enjoy low budget films, there is something tangible and real about them because they cannot afford the superficial stuff to distract from the "meat" ––the acting, the direction, the plot, the story. I would liken it to a student who hasn't studied for an exam goes in knowing he is going to fail and just puts his head on the desk and sleeps.

In someone else's hands the plot would have serious potential.

Do not expect magic or even a cult classics like, say, Divine's Polyester, or Showgirls, at least there you learn to expect bad acting.

Love & Suicide went from bad, to worse, to the WORST movie I have ever seen.

Incredibly True Story of Two Girls In Love Meets But I'm a Cheerleader
simplefeet20 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
If your looking for witty dialogue and great acting - stay away from this movie. If you want to share in the tragedy of two high school students (played by actresses who like they are 27-30) then watch this movie. The story progresses too quickly. Which makes the first scenes feel forced/rushed. The actresses seemed slightly disinterested in each other. However - after an hour into it, they seem to get the hang of things.

The soundtrack is OK, however, at one point in the film, you can barely hear the actresses lines, they are drowned out by music. From a technical point of view, this is not the best independent film, Yet the characters and the genuineness of the story line will grow on you if you let it. It is of course, based on a true story.

tedious to watch
cvol784 January 2007
Yeah, I made it all the way to the end. It was pretty hard though.

Sometimes I was wondering if there was even a director on set. The acting...well, I don't even know what to say. I thought the girl who played Emily tried her best with the boring, sometimes wacky and sometimes predictable dialog.

I know that it was low budget but the hollow sound and the lighting unfortunately made it look and sound like a 100-minute-long audition tape.

I'm not even going to talk about the ending...

The best thing about the movie was the music.

That being said, I do not recommend this movie to anyone. Even for lesbians who don't have many movies to watch overall, this is nothing to waste your time on. If you're looking for a sad lesbian themed movie, check out The Children's Hour, Lost and Delirious or High Art. Those will all leave you depressed and gloomy but you won't have to suffer cinematic hell in the process.

Good Intentions...but falls way short
dancingtooslow21 August 2007
This movie obviously had good intentions. At the end there is a dedication to someone named Kellie who, as a viewer, I can only assume found herself in a situation similar to the one the movie depicts. Perhaps she made the "wrong" choice. That dedication is the ONLY redeeming quality of Love & Suicide.

The movie becomes unbearable from the opening sequence. Once the viewer is already that irritated only about five minutes into the film, it's pretty much going to be downhill after that...which it was. I know the film was low budget and the camera shots were actually pretty good...unfortunately, everything else was horrid. The acting, the plot, the sound quality, the picture quality...the acting. I'm sorry but the acting is horrible. Beyond horrible. It's as if the actors are trying to act like people acting. That's the only way I can think to describe it. As I watched, I actually pictured the script with the stage direction in my mind. None of the movements were natural and none of the characters' reactions to one another fit. In short: the timing is WAY off. The timing of the entire film is way off. I'm no director so I know the limits of my knowledge but I really feel there had to be SOME way to convey the passing of time...until they explained about graduation not being too far away I was under the impression that the first portion of the movie had taken place over the span of a week...a month at most.

All that being said, it's really a shame. This movie truly could have been powerful with a little tweaking. All the moments in the film in which we are supposed to feel something are obvious but only because the set-up is obvious (which is a bad thing). The moving scenes totally fell flat. For instance, when Kaye's brother takes his hat of his head and puts it on hers, we should feel the understanding he has for her, the innocence and protectiveness of the love of her brother...somehow it just doesn't come off that way. There are so many more scenes like this (for example: ALL of the fight scenes) and all they do is take away from the movie. All these things put together, Love & Suicide comes off as one long, cheesy, low-budget commercial.

A pile of horse crap
dooriangray23 November 2007
I registered with IMDb.com just so i could comment about this movie. My god what a steaming pile of horse crap this was! It shouldn't even be touted as a real movie, this is very deceiving. this is a 15 year old's film project at best. The acting is terrible. But even good actors could not save this. The dialog is probably the worst part of this movie. Who the hell wrote this crap? And that constant joke coming from the chubby lesbian about Kaye being a "damsel in distress" got old real fast. God i'd rather have a camel take a wet dump in my ear than watch this crap again. Do not rent this movie. If they gave you the movie for free do not watch it. smash it with a hammer. Even if smashing this video caused you to lose your Hollywood video or blockbuster video account it would be well worth it. this is an abomination. I suppose i have said all i can about this without being redundant. any questions....email me.

Close to home
Ereth20 December 2006
It's fair to say that most people have suffered from some from of torture at the hands of their classmates and this film not only brings back those awful feelings, but gives an all encompassed view as to what pressures keep people from expressing who they truly are.

At the start I honestly thought it'd end up a stale B rated drama but as it went on I fell more and more in love with the characters. Through the writing and directing Em, in particular, became very real and you feel you have met girls just like her and Kaye as well. It was written convincingly even down to the arguments with overbearing parental units. I am sure I've had some of those conversations before.

All in all I say stick with the film even though the acting, from a good portion of the of the cast, and musical score leaves something to be desired. The quality of the story shines through and the directing is great. Both love and suicide scenes in the film are tasteful and well done and may just tug at your emotions a bit. I loved the ending because it was unexpected and so true to life.

Mia Salsi did an awesome job and I can't wait to see more from her. I have to give this 8/10 stars.

Not as bad as I expected
delaneydiesel23 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the first couple of minutes of the movie and then looked at IMDb to see reviews ... and most of what I saw was negative. I figured, yeah, they're probably right, it's going to suck pretty bad.

The whole movie was made up of about 5 actors ... a pretty typical low budget film to say the least. But I really disagree with the negative reviews on the acting. I thought the acting was fine. It's the dialogue that was bad ... and I don't think it's a spoiler to say that Emily's over the top crap about being the one to "save the princess" is too much. She pulls that in like the first 10 minutes of the film and it's an underlying theme for the rest. No one, not even a teen talks like that.

Give the movie at least 15 minutes into it, get over the initial shock of bad dialogue and stuff, and chill with it a bit, and it's not that bad. Someone also reviewed that the 'love scene' was bad ...

The movie is about 2 young girls in love. Two girls who have never been in love or experienced sex before... so Geez, what did you think it was going to look like? It's not porn for god's sake. It's a story about love, first love. Get over it. If you want porn go somewhere else.

This is the kind of movie that, had I been shown when I was confused as a teenager I might have gotten some insight.

Road to hell is paved with good intentions
traiecto826 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has good intentions, at least in the message "don't be afraid, no matter how tough it can be. Fear will kill you in the end" It's a good message, but the container is so flawed that the message gets squashed by bad acting, complete lack of credibility in the feelings, dialog that's delivered as if it were read out loud, stereotypes instead of breathing, living people.

It abuses from effects such as slow-motion to compensate for a complete lack of credibility in the acting and thus, a lack of emotional force...

The suicidal part of it still reminds me of a low-budget film from the pre-90s, when lesbians seemed to have (at least on celluloid) an utter incapacity of live good, happy lives, and a tendency to get caught in over-the-top dramas that often involved separation, death, or prison.

Had it focused on the rewards of living life according to how we feel it (and not according to how others think we should live it), it would have being less dramatic, more inspiring. But it doesn't, it focuses of pain, on loss and leaves the message at just a theoretical ideal.

I can't see how this movie can be an inspiration to anyone to come out or overcome fear and rejection.

If you're looking for a really good movie that talks about overcoming fear and daring to live what you feel, go back to the magnificent "Desert Hearts" (even better: read the novel!)

Flawed, yet touching
hpod2620 July 2011
It is quite clear that "Love and Suicide" is an amateurish film. One could compare it to a student film. The cinematography violates rules of perspective. The acting is flawed, to the extent that you can tell the dialog is scripted.

And yet: It is a very touching film. For me, the story hit very close to home. The story of a lesbian high school student, living in a conservative religious family, may not have been portrayed on film often, but is not that uncommon in the real world.

This film makes you take a look at how painful this situation can be. It really makes you think about the issues, and how one can choose what is right vs. wrong (to which there is no clear answer).

But it's not a depressing film. It has several touching, heart warming, and just plain fun, scenes. It was certainly my pleasure to watch.

Granted, the film is imperfect. But if you can overlook the production standards and immerse yourself in the story (which I found easy to do), you will certainly enjoy the film and be touched deeply.

Not impressed
shakeit4eva16 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
OK, I don't want to upset anyone who enjoyed this film but it was a really bad movie. Just the way the scenes were edited and the acting, it made me cringe at some points. I really tried to enjoy it but it was like a student film, they must have had the smallest budget. I really liked the story line to an extent and the characters were likable but the film on a whole was just awful. Also, why is it that in almost every film with lesbian characters one of them has to either commit suicide or die or turn straight?!?! This is so sending a wrong and unrealistic message. I gave it 3 stars and everything considered I think that was very kind of me. Only watch this film if you want to laugh at how bad it is.

i admire the movie...
Call_716 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
it's very realistic, i was able to relate with it...though ,there is a little bit a need of enhancement with their acting career for both actresses who played as the mothers of these two girls... but it is understandable why them, since it's a low-budget film.it's quite obvious in their scenes, they seem hesitant and a bit rusty in their lines ............they always look like waiting for the punch -in lines...but I do praise the acting of these two main characters most especially Emily, she played well.

In general, i applauded the movie.......the simplicity of it's style but hard hitting message. For those anti-homosexuals, they might condemn the movie.

Never. EVER. View this movie.
nemostarluver22 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
My friend and I rented this movie for 3.99 at blockbuster. If I'd have known how absolutely horrible this movie was going to be, I wouldn't have paid a cent. I had no warning for this bs. The acting can't even be called acting, the inevitable sex scene is awkward, and you can tell that both girls feel completely uncomfortable doing it, and the male villain... god, who couldn't tell he was going to attack emily And the musical cues... my lord. This movie makes me want to cry. Never rent this. In fact, if you happen to look upon it, gauge out your eyeballs. This movie isn't of God- it's from hell. I'm just gonna take the last couple lines to write blah blah blah shiz cause I really don't want to continue on with this review.

Possibly the worst film I have ever seen!
LhiannanShee8 October 2010
I watched this film after it was recommended to me on Amazon. To begin with I looked online for some clips, and after viewing a couple that I decided were just fan videos of teenage kids reenacting their favourite scenes, I got the movie... and to my horror discovered that what I thought was a home movie by a child was the ACTUAL movie!

I couldn't endure the whole thing and gave up after about twenty minutes! Terrible acting, terrible dialogue, terrible filming, just terrible everything! I cannot stress how shockingly awful this is! I have in all honesty seen better movies in my school media studies class. This is an embarrassment!

If you're looking for a young sad lesbian movie, I would suggest Lost & Delirious.

this is not at all realistic
lukebra1 March 2016
some reviews have said it was bits total crap. the chubby ugly annoying girl trying to woo the pretty girl who is in emotional distress and take advantage of is bull s. she is a very pretty new girl at school so would get a lot of attention, and not pal around some delinquent freak who is ugly and hangs around older low class chumps. the older guy who is in love with the fat chubby girl isn't believable either. shes too fat, dorky, unattractive, and uncool for guys like that to fall in love with. thats just the storyline. the acting was worse than in porno flicks. the production, directing, dialog, and music did not work at all. the only positive thing i can say about this movie is te other rmain character was very pleasing to look at. shes pretty and sort of a gril next door type.

the only believable thing in the story was the fat obnoxious girl getting dumped and then making a big selfish scene about it and sor tof attempting suicide for attention. I did know a lot of fat annoying girls who dod things like that for attention in high school.

Not a good movie
Irishchatter4 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
So this story was meant to be two girls that are deeply in love, well how come one has to go with the religious side of being a lesbian then the other one hanging around and wasting her time to win that girl back? Seriously why couldn't this take place at the beginning where Kaye did? I was like so surprised that Kaye's mother didn't even realise the girls were an actual couple. It seemed to me that she did know but then I only found out near the end that the mother would be devastated if she finds out Kaye was a lesbian. Not a good timing to be saying that line really, it seemed pretty sloppy to me for a low budget film like! Also that guy who played David didn't have that passion mode to play his character. He sounded like he was way too tired to play his role and believe me, he didn't show it like he should.

If you feel like seeing this movie, walk away and watch "Lost and Delirious"!
