The Missing Sound of Music
JordanThomasHall3 July 2019
Hillary's father, Mr. Brooke (early western character actor Raymond Hatton), has come from the country to take his daughter back home. Lou considers farm life to stay near his love interest. Lou overhears Mr. Brooke telling Hillary he promised a heartbroken Clem Porterhouse to bring her back to him. Mr. Brook admires Clem's vocal talents and says he won't let Hillary marry anyone without talent. Lou decides to take lessons from Mr. Field's brother Prof. Melonhead Fields' (also Fields) singing school. Prof. Melonhead teaches Lou the proper way to use the tones of his voice. Bud pushes Lou to go sing for Hillary and her dad, but they overhear Mr. Brooke say he doesn't care if Lou can sing, Clem can accompany himself on piano, which he prefers. Bud leads him to Mr. Bacciagalupe's music shop where they buy a record player to hide as Lou's piano playing. They go to Hillary's apartment to play in front of her and her father with Bud playing the record when he's told "all right" in a hilarious scene.

While episodes to this point in the series has had some great laughs and routines, this one has the plot to match it. A strong episode.

Warning: Spoilers
This is an excellent episode of the series. Sid Fields script is well developed around a couple of Abbott & Costello's great routines. The regular characters of season 1 are all here too.

Hillary Brooke's dad comes to town & threatens to take her back out to the farm to marry the boy she left behind whose still there waiting for her. Seems the boyfriend can sing & play piano. Sid Fields does double duty in this one as the landlord & a voice teacher teaching Costello to sing. Stinky is involved in this one too & there is just enough of him to make it worthwhile as one of the better short roles for Joe Besser.

The routines are some of Lou Costello's farm routine, the voice teaching sequence, & then the class "all right" routine where Lou is trying to prove to Hillary's dad that he can play the piano with Bud's help.

The piano routine is classic & this episode is one of the best ones.
