The latest trailer for Amazon’s “Candy Cane Lane” is little different than the previous announcement teaser, just with more visuals and slightly more exposition offered up.
It’s the same beat, with Murphy as a husband/father who takes the concept of Christmas decorations way too far and accidentally sells his soul to an evil elf played by Jillian Bell. That wish brings about not world peace but the 12 Days of Christmas coming to life via unleashing PG-rated chaos on the town.
Directed by Reginald Hudlin and written by Kelly Younger, “Candy Cane Lane” co-stars Murphy and Bell alongside Tracee Ellis Ross, Thaddeus J. Mixson, Ken Marino, Nick Offerman, Robin Thede, Chris Redd, Genneya Walton, Madison Thomas, Anjelah Johnson-Reyes, Lombardo Boyar, D.C. Young Fly, Danielle Pinnock, Timothy Simons, Riki Lindhome and the always welcome Stephen Tobolowsky. Murphy is a producer alongside Brian Grazer, Karen Lunder and Charisse Hewitt-Webster...

Eddie Murphy has spent much of the last 27 years making kid-friendly flicks like “Imagine That” and “Daddy Daycare.” As such, it’s a little surprising that “Candy Cane Lane” represents his first Christmas/holiday flick. That’s the hook for this latest Amazon Prime original feature.
This brief teaser doesn’t so much explain the premise as lays out the protagonist, showing Murphy as a loving husband and father who nonetheless takes the concept of Christmas decorations a bit too far. He essentially sells his soul to a magical elf played by Jillian Bell for a holiday-related wish. Alas, much to his family’s chagrin, that wish is not world peace or a new album from Drake.
Murphy’s wish causes a spell that brings the 12 Days of Christmas to life, unleashing PG-rated chaos on the town. One can surmise that all parties learn that Christmas is not about winning...

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

While summer starts in June, things truly heat up in July, and that includes all the hot new drops on streamers. Amazon’s Prime Video has refreshed its slate of content with over 60 new movies, like Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” and the 1973 animated adaption of the children’s book “Charlotte’s Web.”
Prime Video kicks off the start of the month with Doug McHenry’s “Jason’s Lyric,” “Father of the Bride,” and “Little Nicky.”
Plus, if you’re a Reese Witherspoon fan, Prime Video sets you up with her very first film and her breakout role as Dani in “Man in the Moon.” And the entire “Legally Blonde” trilogy is also available, for those who bend and snap.
Prime Video is also giving watchers some ultimate film classics like “Free Willy,” ”Gladiator,” and “Dances With Wolves.”

Prime Video has adapted the one-woman podcast “Empanada Loca” into a new series. “The Horror of Dolores Roach” will begin streaming on the service on July 7. Buckle up, because this one is gruesome. Roach (Justina Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights after a long prison sentence and works as a masseuse in the basement of a friend’s empanada shop. But when her security is threatened, Roach is driven to extremes to survive.
Watch “The Horror of Dolores Roach” trailer:
Season 2 of “Good Omens” also will premiere on Prime Video in July. Arriving July 28, the series focuses on the friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the snarky demon Crowley (David Tennant). While the Apocalypse has been averted, the pair are back living their lives in London, until the archangel Gabriel shows up. The series is based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

Let’s be honest, it’s a weird time out there in the world of streaming movies. As the major streamers continue to mess around with their apps and libraries, adding ad-tiers or changing their names to nonsense words that have nothing to do with the brand, they’re also charging more for less. As Netflix, Max, and Amazon Prime decrease in value, free streaming services become a better deal.
But just because you’re not shelling out any cash doesn’t mean that you want a terrible experience. If you know where to look, you can find hundreds of movies available online, completely for free. And no, I’m not referring to those sketchy sites you used to visit in college. I’m talking about services that let you watch full-length movies completely for free. Sure, you’ll need to watch a few ads to get the movies, but...

At the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, the cast of “Harlan Coben’s Shelter” – which debuts on Prime Video on Aug. 18 – spoke about how the show rings true when it comes to presenting a true representation of the country’s diversity, and delivering an authentic depiction of teenage life in the U.S.
At the press conference for the show, which followed its world premiere at the festival, were Jaden Michael, Constance Zimmer, Adrian Greensmith and Abby Corrigan, alongside Edward Ornelas, one of the show’s executive producers and directors.
Michael, who plays Mickey Bolitar in the teen thriller, said: “When I was growing up, there was one movie I watched religiously. It was called ‘Imagine That’ with Eddie Murphy, Nicole Ari Parker and Yara Shahidi – it was one of her first projects. And I watched that movie on repeat daily, because it was the only movie where I saw someone who looked like me.

When looked at from the outside, the premises of the first two "Bill & Ted" movies are baffling. In the first film, the title characters (Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves) are a pair of slacker California dudes who are more interested in their band than in studying high school history. Randomly, a visitor from the future (George Carlin) appears in a high-tech, time-traveling phone booth and announces to Bill and Ted that their band will not only become successful, but that their music will become so profound as to unite humanity and usher in a new utopia. In order to form their band, however, they will have to pass an upcoming history exam and stay in school. The Carlin character gives them the phone booth, and they travel through time, viewing history in person through their particular slacker lens. In the sequel, Bill and Ted die and traverse the afterlife...

ABC‘s The Company You Keep continues to recruit great talent for its stellar cast. From Bridget Regan in the premiere to Luke Kirby in episode 3, we have been mighty impressed. And the latest addition to the cast of The Company You Keep is Marin Hinkle, who plays Claire Fox in episode 4, “All In.”

The Company You Keep fans first heard the name Claire Fox in episode 3 when David Hill received a call from her. His senatorial campaign was running on fumes. Amazon Prime Video has popped off with plenty of new content for March 2023 with original shows and some great catches for films to stream. “Top Gun: Maverick” will arrive March 24, and Jordan Peele’s “Nope” before that on March 21. With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.
We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.
Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

It’s last call for a number of great movies leaving HBO and HBO Max in March. Fortunately, the month is also packed with new movies and shows, but if you were planning to revisit any of the films below, now’s your chance.

Expiring titles of note include Sam Raimi’s definitive horror films “The Evil Dead” and “Evil Dead 2,” Wes Anderson’s charming coming-of-age romance “Moonrise Kingdom,” the Charlize Theron-led dramedy “Tully,” Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island” starring Pete Davidson, and the musical drama “Dreamgirls,” starring Jennifer Hudson in the role that earned her the Oscar.

It still might be a little while before we’re able to go back to the movies again. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for February 2021, Amazon Prime is bringing the theater home. The movies are the real appeal this month.
Amazon’s offerings are highlighted by two original films of note. The first is Bliss, which premieres on Feb. 5. This will star Owen Wilson and Salma Hayek as a couple experiencing some intimacy issues. Presumably this is all just a tune up for when Wilson dons a mustache in Disney+’s Loki later in May. The other film is the sci-fi rom-com The Map of Tiny Perfect Things on Feb. 12.
Other library movies include Antz, Moulin Rouge, The Prestige, The Village, and Dazed and Confused, all of which arrive on Feb. 1. Sonic the Hedgehog is set to arrive later on Feb. 18.
Amazon is premiering only one new original series this month.

Edde Murphy made good at the Razzies. After making a number of critically derided films over the years, the comedian won the Redeemer Award for his career turnaround performance in Netflix’s “Dolemite is My Name.” He overtook four other nominees who redeemed their past cinematic sins last year: Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”), Keanu Reeves (“John Wick 3″ and Toy Story 4”), Will Smith (“Aladdin”) and Adam Sandler (“Uncut Gems”). Check out the complete list of Razzie winners here.
SEERazzies: Every Worst Picture Winner 1981 to Today
Murphy starred in “Dolemite” as Rudy Ray Moore, a real-life comedian whose “Dolemite” blaxploitation films made him a cult figure and an inspiration to future performers. The role earned Murphy acclaim from critics, who called his turn “irrepressibly alive” and a “killer comeback.” He earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor and a Critics’ Choice bid for Best Actor. But he missed the cut at the Oscars.

If you’ve seen ABC’s hit comedy Black-ish, you’ve already experienced the solid acting skills of Yara Shahidi. She plays the role of 14-year-old Zoey Johnson – and even won an NAACP Image Award for doing so. Yara Shahidi has come a long way from her roots. The first jobs she took as an actress and model were television and print advertisements for a variety of companies. She eventually made her cinematic debut, starring alongside Eddie Murphy in Imagine That. Now, the actress is pretty well known (especially after her long stretch on Black-ish). If the vagaries of 18th-century sea travel aren’t tough enough on their own, this week’s Outlander caps a season in which Mrs. James Fraser was pressed into service as a ship’s doctor, was forced to live aboard a boat full of men dying in extremely disgusting fashion, jumped overboard to escape said boat and then wound up on another ship and weathered a seriously scary storm before nearly drowning when...

This, for my money, was the most Star Trek-like episode of Discovery yet, with a sequence starting out showing the everyday life of crewmen, someone going to bed just so the expectation of safety and comfort can be subverted, and a trite lesson at the end which reprises the intro. If that doesn’t feel like Star Trek in all its wonderful, trope-laden glory, I don’t know what to tell you.
That leaves me wondering whether this feeling is a one-off for the show, or whether Discovery is finding its feet. In any case, if you thought Discovery was too...

Imagine that you’re one of the most powerful people in the film business. The sun is just starting to set on another ominously hot September day, but everything looks beautiful and infinite through the floor-to-ceiling windows of your sleek Hollywood office. It wouldn’t be accurate to say that you’re living the dream, because even your wildest fantasies were never this good. The check you got to direct your second “Star Wars” movie had so many digits on it that it looked more like a business card, and the next check someone writes you is going to be blank. And then — pop! — it happens. You get another one of those magical Big Ideas that minted you as a modern titan: What the world truly needs right now is another live-action American remake of a phenomenally popular Japanese anime.

You might think that once the makeup comes off that Bill Skarsgard, Pennywise, might be a lot less scary. But apparently you would be wrong. That open-lip smile he gives is something that he used to perform to scare his younger siblings according to the post below. Imagine that, this expression is only enhanced by makeup instead of masked and reproduced. That make Pennywise that much scarier to be quite honest, and he was already extremely creepy to begin with. There have been a lot of comparisons between this Pennywise and that of Tim Curry’s in the 1990 miniseries that

Class-act director John Boorman continues to mix genre grit with European-flavored art cinema, and the result is another winner. Toshiro Mifune and Lee Marvin fight a miniature two-man war when they’re marooned together on the same tiny island. Boorman’s strong direction and Conrad Hall’s knockout cinematography insure a maximum visual impact; it’s great filmmaking all around.

Can lovely, innocent Blind Date really exist in the same tawdry world as Take Me Out?
Blind Date is coming back this weekend. So much has changed since the 1980s, both on TV and in society itself, that what returns to our screens may not be a straight-forward, fully-intact teleport of the format, but rather a mutant mish-mash: a half-fly Jeff Goldblum of a show just begging to be put out of its misery. The truth of this inevitable transformation can be seen in the steps already taken up the light-entertainment evolutionary ladder, most notably in the DNA of ITV's long-running post-Blind Date offering, Take Me Out.

By now, over a month since Star Wars Celebration went down in Orlando, you’d think that all the juicy tidbits to come out of the event would have surfaced online. Apparently not, though, as Entertainment Weekly’s got one more for us today, and if you’re a fan of John Boyega’s former Stormtrooper turned Resistance fighter Finn, it’ll definitely put a smile on your face.
Given the events at the end of The Force Awakens, which saw the character suffer a devastating injury, it was speculated that he might not have too large of a role to play in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Further fuel was added to that particular fire when the first teaser surfaced and showed our fearless fighter in some sort of medical pod, unconscious and presumably recovering from Kylo Ren’s lightsaber blow.

The 2017 Tribeca Film Festival has come and gone, but several of its highlights face an uncertain future. While the festival opened with an iTunes-ready documentary about Clive Davis and closed with back-to-back screenings of the first two “Godfather” films, many of the films in its competition sections arrived at the festival without distribution deals and ended it in the same state. Imagine that you find yourself far away from home. You’re in a room with six other people, five of whom are strangers to you. Also in the room are enormous piles of books and magazines.
All of them comics.
You have three and a half days to read all the books and magazines and establish some kind of hierarchy to evaluate them and the people who made them.
Sounds pretty sweet, doesn’t it? But, just like sweets, a diet of just these things, force-fed over 80 hours, gets kind of nauseating.
This is what it was like to be an Eisner judge. It was exhausting. My head hurts from wearing my glasses so long, and from my eyes focusing on so many different styles of lettering. My back hurts from sitting in chairs. My stomach rebels at the truly awesome amounts of junk food I consumed.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can typically be found at the end of this post.) This week, however, in light of Jonathan Demme’s death — and in reaction to the immense outpouring of love for the man and his movies that followed the news of his passing — we’ve decided to switch things up with a special mid-week edition of our usual survey.
We asked our panel one simple question: How will you remember Jonathan Demme? The responses we received can be found below.

If we learned one thing from Chicago Med Season 2 Episode 19, it was to never cross Maggie. Oh, and the basic of locating a lost bullet without high tech help.
Okay, so the first lesson should have been a given. We should all be so lucky as to have a Maggie in our lives. Too bad she wasn't around for Nat during that passive aggressive territory marking by Nina. She might as well have peed on Will for all the subtlety she managed.
Which is interesting mostly because I'm still not getting the feeling that Nat is sitting around pining for Dr. Halstead. There's been maybe a moment or too or wondering what might have been, but nothing more.
At least on her side. If Nina's going to be paranoid, she needs to be asserting herself to her boyfriend, not his crush. Blaming another woman, especially not one who's actively seducing your beau,...

Sir Ben Kingsley has never been shy about hamming it up in low-rent garbage (check out 2015’s “Self / Less” to watch him dye his skin orange and play a bald-headed version of Trump), but his latest performance takes things to another level entirely. The kind of low-rent action movie that only exists because everybody involved knew that nobody in the Western world would ever see it, Eran Creevy’s “Collide” stars Nicholas Hoult as a reformed car thief and Felicity Jones as the dying girlfriend whose kidney failure inspires him to do one last job.

At a time when studios rarely fund a film unless its budget is micro or blockbuster, Sony’s Screen Gems has embraced the middle way. By funding mid-ranged genre films like “Don’t Breathe” and making huge box office returns, the mini-major has become a major success story by doing things differently.
But when it comes to gear, they’re moving in the other direction: Today, Screen Gems announced that its new horror film “Cadaver” will be shot with a small and relatively inexpensive ($3,000) Sony a7S II.
“The Sony a7S cameras are a perfect fit for the movies we produce at Screen Gems because they afford us opportunities we might otherwise not get,” wrote Screen Gems’ head of physical production Glenn Gainor, in response to IndieWire’s inquiry.

Dear Kim Kardashian-West,
May we call you Kim?
We hope this letter finds you well, Kim. Let us start by saying we certainly understand why you've been absent from social media for the latter part of this year. What you experienced in Paris -- being held at gunpoint and robbed -- is unfathomable and we wouldn't be able to immediately bounce back to our regular @replies and #OOTDs, either.
Still, with Kanye West and your sisters sharing pictures with you at your mom's Christmas party, we realized exactly how much we've missed your presence on Twitter and Snapchat and Instagram and Facebook and, well, whatever else! No rush -- come back when you are ready -- but we really, really hope that will be soon. Here are just a few reasons why...

Just to prove how easy it is.
On Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter released its 2016 Animation Roundtable to the world. That, in itself, isn’t particularly newsworthy (aside from the fact that animation is awesome, of course) but…well, here, have a look for yourself:
First, the picture: Why, yes, that is a panel consisting of all white men. It’s not the first time this has happened and it infuriatingly won’t be the last (but at least this Tumblr account and also this one will always have fresh content).
Second, the headline: “Seth Rogen and 6 More on Avoiding Ethnic Stereotypes and How to ‘Break the Mold’ of Princesses.” We can’t think of anyone more qualified to speak to ethnic stereotypes and breaking the mold of princesses than a group of white men. Totally.
There’s absolutely zero excuse for this: if you’ve somehow ended up with an all male and/or all white panel...
