I came here to review "Queen of the Black Puddle".
Perhaps as a kid I found "Revenge of King Rameses" to be more unwatchable but that was because of the animation.
I am surprised I don't hear this episode being mentioned in most terrifying examples of children's media when so many other episodes of this are and for me it was truly an effective exorcise in eeriness and suspense.
(NB I do not watch Watchmojo).
The title character might be one of Courage's most formidable adversaries; she isn't a comic relief or caricature like the Kat or Le Quack (as charismatic as they are). She is the stuff of nightmares in this elegant and lyrical story of beguilement and temptation.
There is no explanation for the puddle that appears one day near that small farm (which I love!). Gradually we are menaced not by something macabre but by profound beauty.
It feels archetypal for the kind of narrative trope it is using and I really cannot stress enough that this particular episode of this cartoon has very little that's cartoonish about it. Courage really lives up to his name as the sensation of racing against time is palpable.
Asides from the low key creepiness of the first act, you so get a pay-off in the third act.
Superb stuff.
