Violence & Gore

  • An ambulance is violently struck by a large truck, and crashes. Betts is decapitated in the accident, and his severed head is briefly shown. A hospital employee is knocked unconscious from a blow to the head.
  • Mulder and Scully find Betts' head discarded in a waste receptacle, and Scully later examines it.
  • Betts tears off his thumb to escape handcuffs.
  • Betts cuts out a man's cancerous lung (offscreen), and is shown with a new head coming out of the mouth of his old head.
  • Betts also cuts out his mother's lung, however this is not seen, only implied.
  • Betts attacks Scully in an ambulance, and they trade blows. Betts' hand smashes through a glass cabinet. Scully finally kills him with a pair of defibrillators, sending him through the ambulance doors and onto the ground.

Profanity

  • "Hell" and "ass" are said a few times, and "son of a bitch" is said once.

  • A scene takes place in a bar and a man there begins smoking a cigarette.

  • The ambulance crash at the beginning of the episode is sudden and violent.

  • Betts, after growing a new head, kills the only person who knows he is still alive: the ambulance driver who was present at the crash. He stabs her with a syringe containing electrolytes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • When Betts tears off his finger and grows a new head are both disturbing, graphic scenes. Also, when Betts kills several people and attacks Scully, these scenes are tense and dramatic.
