Floundering a bit

Warning: Spoilers
So in case anybody really thought the first Stargate had been destroyed, this is where it reappears. In Russia. And when a Situation develops there, guess who comes to the rescue?

To me, this is a rather so-so episode, which is a pity as it marks the beginning of a new era, in which other states start disputing the US's monopoly on the Stargate. And here is my first complaint: granted, this is an American show, but it would be fair to at least briefly question the US's right to hog the Stargate. Instead, the episode evades the question by showing that the Russians are too incompetent to run the programme themselves anyway.

To be fair, it also introduces a rather likable new character who really challenges some stereotypes, but this is not enough. So Russia has built a top-secret Stargate command, but the first time something malfunctions, they run to SG-1 without even sending someone back there first? Oh, and it also appears the Russian have been peppering the universe with nuclear devices. AND they're a real haven for traitors. (Not that I don't like hating Maybourne, but this seems a bit extreme even for him. Besides, does he even speak Russian?)

Apart from that, everybody gets a few good lines; the plot is nothing new but it is solid. Still, SG-1 don't get much to do as the problem solves itself almost on its own.

Terrible Episode
claudio_carvalho23 June 2016
The SGC has problem to engage the Stargate and soon they discover that the Russian have found the first Stargate lost on Thor's spacecraft on the bottom of the sea. Further, they have built their own Stargate Command. However they are facing problems in the operation of the Stargate that are affecting also the American one. Therefore the SG-1 is invited to team-up with the Russian scientist Dr. Svetlana Markov to help her to fix the problem. They fly and parachute onto a Russian base and they find the crew dead and the sample of water they had taken from the planet missing. Jack, Sam, Daniel and Teal'c are impressed how the Russian have been able to acquire the technology so fast. But soon Jack finds the responsible alive in a refrigerating chamber while Dr. Markov, Sam and Daniel use a minisubmarine to explore the mysterious water.

"Watergate" is a terrible episode of Stargate SG-1. The idea of an American monopoly of the Stargate technology is irritating, especially when the SGC mentions the American president as responsible for the world in agreements with aliens. But it is an entertaining American show and therefore these references are "acceptable". But the inclusion of Russian in the show through the plan of a traitor is awful. My vote is five.

Terrible episode

I can understand why they would depict the American president as representative of the world, because it is a collaborative production with Canadian television, however, it's absurd ,and, incredibly naive/egotistical to think that the rest of the world is required to follow our lead! Why else would the United Nations even exist?

snooze

This episode serves no purpose, filler to the max. Once again SG1 is called in to save the day but end up just kind of fumbling to the finish line. This storyline should have either been way bigger or stayed away from completely.
