Grand Theft Stargate
owlaurence12 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Here's an episode that reminded me of the good old days! It starts with a hilarious intro where the sheer absurdity of the situation reminds you of the first seasons. I really think the flashback explaining that situation could have been abbreviated *a lot* since that spice-corn won't ever pop up again (I am trying very hard not to make a "popcorn" joke, but let's face it, it's too bad to miss) Never mind: here again, the flashback provides some really good lines.

You've really got to give it to Baal: he never does the expected. After the weird clone-businessman thing, he's now into Gate theft, which has to be the most silly (but oddly efficient) strategy to annoy both the SGC and the Ori. For a moment I even thought he was borrowing a page from the Ori's book and building a mega-Gate like the one Vala managed to blow up. As a matter of fact, I am not really sure that stealing a few gates would really prove that much of a bother to Earth and the Ori, considering the sheer size of the Gate network, but you've got to admire Baal's resilience. I am almost sorry that apparently this was his last convoluted scheme.

I'm also a bit miffed that Earth got a new spaceship so fast(great name by the way). It's almost disrespectful to brave old Prometheus to have it replaced so fast by a much sleeker ship. Never mind. The important point is that once again space fights mean lots of honest action (how touching: Teal'c and Mitchell finally bond over a nice Doom-like rampage) and a serious abuse of tech-thingies, some of which remain rather unclear. (Why did Carter need to reset the Stargate to escape the ship, for instance? It was not the first time SG1 dialed in from a Gate that was not where it was supposed to be.)

All in all, this episode is too much fun to dwell on a few inconsistencies (although I'm willing to admit that I didn't spend too much time looking for explanations). It's exactly what we needed after the depressing Ethon: some crazy action, a Goa'uld to kill and at least a dozen good lines. We're back on track!

Alan McCullough does it again
Doc_Rancher29 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of this episode is just great. The Stargate disappears just when Daniel tries to activate it in a very tense situation. Very nice idea! The rest of the episode is full of good action and very nice schemes. Very well done and mostly good written.

So why just 6/10? Because Alan McCullough does it again. Sloppy writing! Just as in "Stronghold" we see Ba'al without any explanation in a Ha'tak with quite a few Jaffa who obey their arch enemy (all brainwashed? How? Where?). And since Nerus has the correct address it can't be just any Ha'tak. It must be Ba'als old Ha'tak (from where he beamed off in "Reckoning" after he was defeated) or at least one with a stargate (and an Asgard beaming device) he obtained before the events in "Beachhead". Then Ba'als actions in "Ex Deus Machina" make no sense. But it seems everyone's having a Ha'tak these days. The Lucian Alliance's got at least three of them. Was there a big sale I missed (and Earth, too)? Honestly, how did they get them? I thought all of the former Goa'uld-ships are now in the hands of the free Jaffa and maybe a few remaining but hiding Goa'uld? I don't think either of them would give away a Ha'tak without a real good fight and then certainly not in a good shape. Ba'al certainly does not. And once again he is killed. Despite seeing a few clones on his ship I would bet that again this was not Ba'al but another clone. Sorry, I'm falling through the plot- holes here and this is sad because otherwise it's a real nice story. Maybe Alan McCullough should write (popcorn-) action movies where logic and story-development isn't as important as in a (good) Science Fiction series. I think I would very much like these movies because taken aside continuity and good explanations his writing is not bad at all. Both "Stronghold" and "Off the Grid" are very good in every other way. Without these annoying plot-holes this episode would have got 9 or 10 points from me.

The Disappearance of Stargates
claudio_carvalho23 February 2022
The SG-1 is assigned by Gen. Landry to go to a remote planet to investigate the adulteration of a corn-like supply sold to several planets and Mitchell poses of smuggler trying to buy the entire crop from a criminal from the Lucian Alliance called Worrel. However, things go awry and the SG-1 flees to the Stargate. Out of the blue, the Stargate and the DHD vanishes in front of them and they are capture by Worrel and his gang that wants to know where the Stargate is. Fortunately they are beamed up and rescued by the Odyssey. When Gen. Landry learns that several Stargates have disappeared on several planets, he decides to meet Nerus in his jail in Area 51 and uses his appetite to find out who is stealing the Stargates.

"Off the Grid" is a funny episode of "Stargate SG-1". Mitchell posing of mercenary and endangering his fellow mates and fleeing with his team is funny. Nerus and his endless appetite exchanging information per food is also very funny. My vote is seven.

Ba'al off world now?
Calicodreamin11 April 2022
Wait, wasn't Ba'al chilling on earth with his clones? What happened to that entire subplot? Anyway, lame concept the mission with the corn was just thrown out the window.

Woeful Writing
Easygoer1010 August 2020
With lines given by SG1 like "We've got the greatest jobs in the world", one can see it must be teenage writers on this show. Pitiful.
