Strange bedfellows
owlaurence8 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is SGC's first real run-in with the NID, who is becoming more and more of a threat (and one you cannot simply zat away). It is also a redeeming moment for Maybourne, who after spending years as the villain, suddenly acquires a sense of humour and a roguish but rather likable personality. Even though this comes out of the blue, I am willing to play along, simply because Maybourne and O'Neill, aka Starsky and Hutch, are one of the best pairs on Stargate SG1.

The good thing about the episode is that it's unpredictable: it begins with SG1 coming back under a hail of fire only to learn about Hammond's surprise resignation. From then on, SGC is left to deal with a stiff-necked politician of a general who sets out to change everything at SGC without any regard for anybody's feelings, and quickly proves to be incompetent, overconfident, and not very brave --you can actually hear Carter's voice dripping with scorn when she says "sir".

Meanwhile, O'Neill is taking opportunity of his almost immediate suspension (for insolence, what a surprise) to rescue Hammond from the NID. Considering that Jack is, as Maybourne says, a rather straightforward guy who believes in doing the right thing over expediency, this seems rather tricky. But O'Neill once more shows how resourceful he can be. And there are several rather amusing moments, such as Kinsey's password or Maybourne's blatantly fake shock when O'Neill starts threatening Kinsey.

Honestly, this is not my favourite episode. Most of it does not really feel like a Stargate storyline, but it is important to the overall story and it sets up a lot of things that will be developed further on.

Eminence Grise
claudio_carvalho14 July 2016
When General Hammond suddenly retires from the SGC, the arrogant General Bauer assumes the command. His first action is to split the SG-1: Daniel and Sam are assigned scientists, Teal'c is sent to join the SG-3 and Jack is put away. Jack visits General Hammond expecting to convince him to return to the SGC and he learns that his granddaughters have threatened his granddaughter to force him to quit the SGC. Soon Jack finds that the eminence grise is Senator Robert Kinsey that has sent the NID to force the renounce of Hammond. Further, Jack depends on the traitor Maybourne to stop Kinsey. Meanwhile Sam is forced to develop a powerful naquadah bomb and Bauer wants to use it to destroy an entire planet.

"Chain Reaction" is a different episode of "Stargate SG-1", showing the dirty politician work behind the SGC. The plot is reasonably resolved but without any consequences to the bad actions. The final phone conversation between Jack and Maybourne is a rip-off "The Silence of the Lambs". My vote is eight.

Ronny Cox As The Antagonist
Easygoer1031 July 2020
Despite what younger fans may think, Ronny Cox is terrific addition as the antagonist playing "Senator Kinsey". Cox was outstanding in several blockbuster films. For example, "Deliverance" (1972), "Beverly Hills Cop" (1984), and RoboCop (1987) plus numerous other roles. He is a talented musician as well. Lastly, he is perfectly cast as a villain in this and other episodes. A must see for all "SG1" fans.

Warning: Spoilers
From the beginning of this episode I knew, this one was gonna be fun. And it was. E story this time only based on earth. The unusual connection between Jack and Maybourne. I loved this two. Little blackmail, e bit of revanche, e lot of dirt on high politics. I can't even say that Maybourne is the bad guy here. Can you?

At the end of the episode Offcourse everything is back as it has to be. General Hammond on his seat and sg-1 together. And THAN.... The phonecall from " the bad man " Maybourne. At the red phone that normal is used for the president only. Hey Jack, I'm gonna drink some margaritas. NICE!

A decent episode in terms of storyline but lacked depth and implications. It's just a way to throw in old characters and shake things up, but was too swiftly dealt with.
