Everything about Seinfeld is perfect
zfiany1 July 2009
If you look at all Seinfeld's part you find genius everywhere. Haven't you always wondered why this episode was called this and not that? Like for instance, why was this episode called the shoes and not the cleavage? I am kidding but Jerry says in this one: "Looking at cleavage is like looking at the sun. You don't stare at it. It's too risky. Ya get a sense of it and then you look away." Well, you should watch this scene where George and Jerry are supposed to meet with Russel in NBC to discuss to discuss the script for the pilot and they see his daughter denise richards' cleavage and Russell catches them looking. There's a funny dialogue between George and Jerry that you really don't want to miss. There's also this scene where they're trying to write the script, you don't want to miss this one either. In this scene they try to write some lines for Elaine and both surrender saying that they can't write for women hence the reason why Elaine wasn't in the pilot episode.

When Jerry & George arrive at Russell's apartment, Russell says he feels ill & suspects there was something wrong with the pasta primavera he had at Pheiffers. George says his cousin works at Bouchards & they use the bouillabaisse as a toilet. Russell asks "What are you saying?" George replies "You didn't hear it from me but . . . If you go in there stick to the Consommé." Later Jerry, George, & Elaine are in Pheiffers & Elaine says she's going out with Russell. George asks "Where's he taking you." Elaine says "Bouchards." George chokes & Jerry says "I think he's saying 'Get the bouillabaisse.'"

Elaine Reduced To A Sex Object & Works It For Humor!
fleck05IMDB12 May 2019
When George gets caught looking at Denise Richard's chest (22 year old Richards trying to play a 15 year old daughter of NBC's President) Jerry points out looking at cleavage is like looking at the sun: you don't stare at it, it's too risky. You get a sense of it then look away! That can be tough since, as Jerry points out, men love cleavage (and women love shoes). They decide to tempt the NBC President by having Elaine parade nearby with a low cut top and push up bra. Julia-Louis Dreyfus showcases her chest in a manner more humorous than sexy. This was when shows were written honestly to our baser instincts... ie funny. Fortunately there are reruns and the Seinfeld and occasionally new episodes of Larry David's show (Seinfeld's creator). Larry David show doesn't bend to the whims of SJW's, either, as his life regularly goes wrong in each episode. If you liked 80's and 90's comedies you'll like this episode. If shows that aren't PC trigger you, you may want to skip this one.

Jerry Seinfeld: Looking at cleavage is like looking at the sun. You don't stare at it, it's too risky. You get a sense of it then you look away.

Warning: Spoilers
The Shoes is about George being caught staring at Russell Dalrymple's daughter's cleavage and the discussion of Elaine's shoes.

Jerry and George decide they need to insert the Elaine character into the script, but when they start to think of what she would say, they have no idea and quickly decide to remove her. While this itself amusing, it sets up for wonderful moments in regards to Elaine's reaction's to her shoes being talked about. Gail: Nice shoes! Elaine: Oh. Thank you. Gail: Where'd you get 'em? Elaine: They're um, Botticelli's. Gail: Ooh, Botticelli's! Look at you! I'm afraid to go in there. Elaine: Really. Jerry: Would you care to join us? Gail: No, no, I gotta get to the restaurant. Oh! See ya. Jerry: See ya. Elaine: "Oh, look at you, the Botticelli's." Jerry: That bothered you? Elaine: Yes, it bothered me. So I bought a pair of shoes at Botticelli's, I'm not allowed to shop there? That really embarrassed me. Jerry: It did? Elaine: Yes! Couldn't you see that? Jerry: No. This is why you're not in the pilot.

Kramer: Ooh, so...I understand you're buying new shoes now at Botticelli's. Elaine: What? Who told you that? Kramer: Gail Cunningham. Elaine: I don't understand, why is this woman talking about my shoes? Why are my shoes a topic of conversation? Kramer: Well, you know, we were just talking, and she mentioned how you're buying your shoes now at Botticelli's. Elaine: "How I'm buying my shoes now at Botticelli's!" Did you hear this? Jerry: So what? Elaine: So what?! She is talking about my shoes! She is discussing my shoes! It is nobody's business where I buy my shoes! The scene hilarious, as she's so mad and the guys just look on in bewilderment.

Jerry and George go to Dalrymple's apartment to discuss the script. Dalrymple's daughter walks in while he's in the bathroom sick, Jerry nudges George to sneak a peek at her cleavage as she bends over and looks in her backpack. Jerry has a quick look, but George stares, hypnotized and Russell catches him in the act. Jerry: What were you doing? George: Well, it's not my fault. You poked me! Jerry: You're supposed to just take a peek after a poke. You were like you just put a quarter into one of those big metal things on top of the Empire State Building. George: It's cleavage. I couldn't look away. What am I, waiting to win an Oscar here? This is all I have in my life. Russell cancels the pilot, but Elaine volunteers herself to be bait to temp Russell the same as George was tempted, bringing back the pilot and the Elaine character to the script. Not all great from start to finish, but a quality episode. Jerry and Elaine are the standouts.

easily the worst episode

Was this episode an ode to jerry seinfeld perving on a teenager irl? To imagine this episode was pitched to a bunch of higher ups, and they all didn't think anything was wrong with this storyline. Just all around bad. Hoping the rest of the season four picks it up, the weakest season so far.

Tunnel Vision

One of Jerry's previous girlfriends who runs a high class bistro, makes an offhand comment about Elaine's shoes. Elaine is so offended that this dominates her every mood the rest of the episode. Even in the most serious discussions, she slips into her petulance. The boys find out that their pilot has been cancelled and want to know why. The end up at the producer's house (again) and happen to look at his daughter's cleavage. This leads to really serious complications. Of course, this is Seinfeld. Even though George does everything he can to screw things up, people seem to land on their feet. Elaine eventually gets into the act because wants to be a character in the script they are writing. By the way, it's fascinating how long they are taking to write such a short script.

They stared at the cleavage of a 15 year old girl

If there was a zero, I would rate it a zero. In one scene Seinfeld pokes Costanza to look at the cleavage of a 15 year old girl. That was disgusting..

Elaine reduced to sex object. No thanks.

Warning: Spoilers
I have to be careful -- IMDb didn't post my last review. Obviously, there's an agenda on this site.

Anyway, this episode really brings the whole series into the gutter. As I am proud of stating, I am a feminist accidentally born with testicles. I loathe and despise when film and television objectifies women. This episode hinged on the objectification of women. In fact, it went further than that -- It hinged on the fracturing and objectification of women. If you've taken any women's studies courses, you know what I'm talking about.

So George gets caught leering at the 15 year old daughter of the head of NBC. This endangers Jerry and George's pilot deal with the network. The scene is creepy enough, I mean, a middle- aged man leering at a 15 year old girls' breasts? I realize it was the 1990s, but men were sort of evolved then, weren't they? But no, it's Seinfeld, and even in the 90s, they weren't willing to go along with political correctness. So in addition to the scene being creepy as all get out, they play it for laughs. Yes, they expect you to laugh at an old man ogling a young girl.

If that weren't bad enough, in order to correct the situation, they "set up" the NBC executive by having Elaine broadcast her cleavage in his face until he realizes that, "hey, boys will be boys and women are here for our entertainment!"

I really don't know if the Elaine character was ever asked to stoop this low in any other episode. For the most part, I thought she was a nice, progressive female character. Her actions in this episode seem quite unusual. Considering nothing was moved forward with respect to the story arc of the pilot with NBC, you can safely skip this episode.

"You never saw people so pleased"
juanmaffeo15 July 2016
Easily one of the weakest episodes in Season 4, the quality drop from The Movie to this is dramatic.

It seems that this episode propels the pilot arc further but in the end it is in the same place that it was before. All the things that happen in the episode are corrected by the end of it and it is all back to where it was.

Apart from that, the humor is not good. Taking some of George's phrases out of the way, nothing else rings funny. Gail isn't really good, Elaine's story with the shoes isn't entertaining and when they used her as an object of distraction Elaine lost a lot of her character.
