The Engagement is a classic for many reasons, it's pure Seinfeld hilarity.
callanvass11 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
"What are we doing? what kind of lives are these? Were children, were definitely not men".-Jerry Seinfeld.

"What are you thinking about? Marriage?, Family?. There man-made prisons, you're doing time!".-Kramer.

"Susan: I just want you to know, I love your son very much. Estelle: You do? May I ask why?".

.Cop Knocks on Newman's door. "Newman: What took ya so long?".

The Story here is that, Jerry and George make a pact to change there lives, to try love like normal people, only Jerry does not change, thanks to Kramer's opinion about marriage. George ends up regrettably proposing to Susan. Elaine has dogs outside her apartment, who refuse to shut up, so she enlists Kramer and Newman to help her out.

The Engagement was the 1st time that we didn't see a Seinfeld episode, start with a stand up routine, from Jerry Seinfeld. Instead it cuts straight to the chase, with George and his girlfriend playing chess. In one of the funniest bits in the entire episode, George gets annoyed, because his girlfriend beats him at chess, typical hilarious George response "I don't think we should each other anymore". I thought the Elaine not being able to sleep cause of the dogs, wasn't quite as funny as George and Jerry's, it just seemed too ordinary for Seinfeld. That being said, I still laughed at it.

What's so funny about George is, he's always jumping to conclusions in his mind, and ends up acting on them, without thinking it through. Seeing his reactions watching happily taken couples, while sitting on a park bench, imagining his own scenario's with Susan in flashback montage, is pretty hysterical itself. Heidi Swedberg is an exceptionally beautiful woman, and that's what makes George's well know disdain for her eventually once again, hilarious. Larry always has these funny little things, that he puts into his episodes, he'll even go as far as to someone who eats pea's, one at a time, and that's a big reason, that makes this show outrageously funny. Jerry's deliberate overacting is hilarious, when ever he does it. The way he yells "YOUR GETTING MARRIED" is very funny. I also enjoyed Ed O'Ross in his cameo, as a cop.

Bottom Line. The Engagement is a classic episode, in every way possible. imaginative humor and classic sequences, make this one, a memorable one.

"What are we doing?"

A perfect episode to start out Season 7.

Larry David is a freaking genius. The idea of George getting engaged is absolute gold. This is probably about the only thing Seinfeld hadn't tackled before: marriage. It is not marriage per se in this season but is the world of long-term relationships and who better to be the protagonist of that situation that our hero George Costanza.

Everything about George's story is perfect. From the opening conversation with Jerry to the Costanza's reaction and him regretting his decision in a matter of minutes. And it makes perfect sense that Susan is his choice considering his past with her and above that she just makes the perfect hateable wife. I got nothing against her, but you could see why George would have.

That being said, it is not a perfect episode and the main reason is the other parallel story. Elaine situation with the barking dog is very funny and surprisingly relatable but it is the way they handle it that takes Seinfeld into more absurd ground, a ground they would approach further on the series. Because up until this season there were no incredibly weird or improbable events in Seinfeld track record (except for a few times) but it is in Season 7 that the weirdness started taking hold of the show. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Here it definitely works but it differentiates too much with such a realistic thing as marriage on the other side. Plus, it doesn't connect at all with the other story.

Nevertheless it's a great opening episode for this season and the start of one the most memorable arcs in the series.

Season 7 Brings a Brand New George... Sorta
Samuel-Shovel26 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "The Engagement", Jerry and George kick off the season by making an oath to give up their childish, petty ways and grow up. Both men attempt second tries at failed relationships. Jerry ends up re-breaking up with his girlfriend because she eats peas one by one. George plunges in head first, asking Susan to marry him. Meanwhile, Elaine, Kramer, and Newman scheme a plot to kidnap a dog that barks so much that Elaine can no longer get a good night's sleep.

This is a really strong start to season 7. I've always been a big fan of the "George's engagment" plot-thread and it all kicks off right here! There's not really much not to like about this episode. Everyone's subplot is hysterical. Newman's scenes are simply the best!

This episode tackles the differences we see between single & married men. George sees both sides of this. Initially as an outsider on the pier, admiring the loving couple, then as an insider that can no longer do fun things with his best friend Jerry. These interactions are obviously comedically heightened but I think they are hilarious. This episode reminds me a lot of a future dark comedy, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia". In IASIP, the characters are continually trying to change their ways and evolve into better people but always eventually revert back to the terrible human beings that they truly are. This episode (obviously long before IASIP ever aired) is in the same thread.

So Much Fun
Hitchcoc29 January 2023
Of course, George is walking example of paranoia. When he and Jerry begin to doubt their purpose in life, George decides he should restore his relationship with Susan. So he goes to her apartment and proposes. She actually says, "Yes." But he immediately begins to regret it, especially when Jerry doesn't follow through on his part. In the subplot, Elaine can't sleep because a dog across the street barks through the night. Kramer tells her that Newman can get rid of the dog, so they dognap him with hilarious results. The byplay is hilarious throughout, especially when George spars with Jerry for not doing the same thing he does--get engaged.

Hilarious.

Warning: Spoilers
The Plot of the episode: Elaine has a problem with sleeping because of these dogs barking all night and she loses her voice. Meanwhile, George and his ex Susan Ross(From season 4). He proposes and she accepts after a few hours of convincing. Kramer and Newman have a solution to help Elaine out. Elaine likes the solution. Kramer and Newman plan on killing the dog.

The engagement is a great episode of the greatest show of all time. I would never marry Susan Ross. She just seems so, I don't know what. The engagement is a funny episode because of many things. But a lot of it has to do with the situation with Elaine and the dog. It is very funny and it is pretty awesome. The engagement is a very funny episode, like every episode.

Bit too much of a stretch
chunkylefunga26 November 2021
Look, I get that past storylines have been a bit crazy but not even George would have gotten married over one conversation with Jerry.

I don't like where this storyline is going and really it should have just been closed/fallen apart by the end of the episode. The joke gets stretched paper thin.

Mad About You
safenoe5 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
One interesting change is the absence of Jerry Seinfeld's monologue at the beginning and end, which I miss somewhat. Anyway, season seven shows us a new George, as he proposes to Susan Ross, played by Heidi Swedberg, and he kind of regrets it, especially as Susan is like the fifth musketeer if you know what I mean with the analogy and all.

Anyway, Elaine was losing sleep because of a neighboring dog, and she enlists Newman to despatch the dog. Wayne Knight, who plays Newman, starred with Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct, which also had Michael Douglas in a supporting role to back up Knight and Stone.

Dogs drive people crazy
ThunderKing62 April 2023
The start of the final good season of Seinfeld in the series.

Month of review: April Number date of review: 2nd Year of review: 2023rd Century of review: 21st

What happened in this episode? George gets engaged.

Jerry dates and breaks up for petty reasons.

Elaine, Kramer and Postal worker Newman deal with a worthless mutt.

The story and the production overview: any episode including a dog is instant hash. It's annoying and displays dognuttery.

Only George's storyline is engaging. Jerry's story gets an assist.

Overall just an Okay ep.

Highlight: Newman wanting to euthanize a dog.

Villian: the dog and its dognut owner.

Laugh meter: 3. The dog suppressed me from laughing.

Girlfriend attractiveness level: Jerrys was a 7.

What can be learned?: Don't get married.

Verdict: It's okah 2 h8 dogs.
