Bend and Stretch ... Reach for the Weapons
WeatherViolet4 October 2009
This episode marks the most recent appearance of James Olson, who began his long television career in 1956, and for Paul Lueken, having one earlier credit. This is the only credit thus far for Katharine Durish.

Wayne Bennett (Jason Beghe) stirs up plenty of admiration and contempt in Cabot Cove after opening his gymnasium to conduct customized workout regiments, publicly and privately, hence its banner, "Wayne's Workout Gym." -- But while the admiration generates from Cabot Cove's female citizens, the contempt results from its males' disapproval of his catering to the attention of the females.

Eve Simpson (Julie Adams), Renee (Ruta Lee), Nancy La Rue (Sally Struthers), Mrs. Hardin (Alix Elias), Betty (Patricia McPherson) and another Woman (Michele Bernath) are some of Wayne's enthusiastic students and avid supporters, these ladies constantly patronizing his operation, and claiming improved health because of this.

Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury), however, does not participate in Wayne's Workout Gym (one sign reads "Gim"), and hears from gentlemen who object to his overly attentive procedures, such as Cabot Cove Gazette publisher Ben Devlin (Joe Dorsey), pharmacist Clarence La Rue (James Olson) (Nancy's husband), and the roguish Joe Hardin (Ernie Lively), who picks a fight regarding his wife's dedication to Wayne at La Rue Pharmacy. Sheriff Mort Metzger (Ron Masak), neither, holds Wayne in high regard, as his ever-unseen wife, Adele, also dedicates herself to his workouts.

When Fred Keppard (Hugh O'Brian) arrives in Cabot Cove from Boston, to approach Eve at Simpson's Realty, to convince her to invest in a land deal on the pretext that the property will appreciate in value with the purported construction of a road and mall. The flirtatious Eve naturally accommodates "Freddy" as she does Wayne and nearly any other widowed or single gentleman whom she encounters on an everyday basis.

But Fred and Wayne share a checkered past as "bunco" artists, embezzlers who have swindled a string of victims with con games. When Fred surprises Wayne with a visit to his gymnasium at closing time one evening, Wayne informs him that he's gone straight and has been doing well with his exclusive clientèle with physical education, thus garnering another irate male with whom to contend.

Then when Eve Simpson discovers that she must leave on a trip to Rockport, she tells Wayne that she must cancel her private appointment at 9:00 PM, but she also tells Fred to meet her at her residence after 9:00 PM.

That night, Sheriff Mort Metzger nabs Joe Hardin, who has broken into Wayne's Gym; Nancy La Rue leaves town in a hurry. And, upon Eve's return, she discovers a body in her bedroom.

Jessica arrives with Mort Metzger, Deputy Floyd (Will Nye) and Paramedic (Paul Lueken), to the victim of murder, leading the way for a string of events to unfold, to change Cabot Cove citizens' attitudes toward one another.

Gymnasium Receptionist (Katharine Durish) is faced with a roomful of ladies who demand refunds on their subscription payments. Husbands and wives disagree as never before, and Jessica and Mort stand at odds over which suspects to arrest in this mystery to exercise their minds over "A Body to Die For."

Let's get physical
bkoganbing27 April 2018
Jason Beghe has arrived in Cabot Cove and he's opened a fitness center and the women of the village are flocking. Making their husbands and sweethearts quite jealous in the process.

Hugh O'Brian has also arrived there and he knows Beghe from way back when they were pulling cons together. Beghe says he grifts no more, but O'Brian has a con lined up and Jessica Fletcher's old friend Julie Adams is one of the intended marks.

When O'Brian is found dead in Adams's house it's a puzzle for Ron Masak, but of course Angela Lansbury figures it out as you knew she would.

I have to say this was one of the better plotted MSW episodes around. And it was only a casual observation at the crime scene that leads Lansbury to the solution.

A very good mystery.
Sleepin_Dragon30 September 2022
Entrepreneur Ben Devlin arrives in Cabot Cove and instantly knocks local Eve Simpson off her feet, the village is also under the spell of personal trainer Wayne Bennett.

There's always something a little extra about the episodes set in Cabot Cove, even more so when the locals appear, Eve in particular, she was a cracking character, lots of fun, and always full of gossips and scandals. Maybe a shame that the other ladies from the beauty parlour are absent.

It works very well as a mystery, you are made to wait to learn the identity of the killer, and there are no huge leaps here, the conclusion is very satisfying, with Jessica's revelation feeling reasonable and believable.

Despite the obvious humour and chuckles, there is a slightly serious tone as well, especially in the scene where the truth comes out.

8/10.

An episode to die for
TheLittleSongbird12 October 2017
Have always been quite fond of 'Murder She Wrote'. It is a fun and relaxing watch that makes you think as you try to unwind in the evening. If one wants more complex, twisty mysteries with lots of tension and suspense 'Murder She Wrote' may not be for you, but if you want something light-hearted and entertaining but still provide good mysteries 'Murder She Wrote' fits the bill just fine.

"A Body to Die For" is another one of the best Season 7 episodes. One may miss Ruth Roman and Gloria DeHaven but their absence is nowhere near enough to bring down an excellent episode that at its best is to die for. It is hugely entertaining and charming, with a very easy to get on board with and absorbing mystery that is tied up neatly and cleverly.

The episode is particularly worth seeing for the cast. Can't say anything bad about Angela Lansbury, who can do no wrong as Jessica, while Ron Masak is fully settled and has an easy-going presence and never descends into pushover or buffoon territory. Will Nye does a nice job.

Julie Adams is great fun and succeeds at being both feisty and classy. Jason Beghe is on smoking hot form, one can totally see what everybody sees in him. The only acting debit, and my only criticism of the episode, is the returning Joe Dorsey, once again epitomising the adjective annoying.

Production values as ever are slick and stylish, Cabot Cove never fails to charm. The music has energy and has presence but also not making the mistake of over-scoring, while it is hard to forget or resist the theme tune. The writing is suitably light-hearted, amiable and intriguing while taking itself seriously when needed without going overly so.

Overall, excellent. One of the better Season 7 episodes. 9/10 Bethany Cox

All the women are gaga about Wayne Bennett.
planktonrules15 January 2023
Cabot Cove's ladies are all gaga over Wayne Bennett and his new exercise studio. As for the men in town...well, they tolerate it! Among the women nuts over Bennett is Eve (Julie Adams)...who also happens to be nuts over Fred Keppard (Hugh O'Brian) as well! But when Fred is found murdered, Wayne is the prime suspect and Eve seems to be completely out of luck! Of course, Jessica Fletcher is on hand to sort out the killing and find out who is responsible.

While one of the 'nosy' older women is in the show, Eve, sadly the rest of the nosy beauty shop ladies are no where to be seen...which is a shame as they are pretty funny. Still, an interesting mystery with an okay solution make this one worth your time.

A body to die for!!
coltras3528 May 2022
Sleuthing writer Jessica Fletcher investigates a physical fitness instructor who has the ladies of Cabot Cove in a sweat. But his mysterious background may link him to the murder of a con artist. A well-plotted mystery with some light touches. Loved the bit where the ladies who fancy their fitness instructor learn he's married and suddenly start grumbling about him. The detective segments are good, keeping one guessing.

Lots of beautiful young things in Cabot Cove aka Wayne's World
safenoe4 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Cabot Cove is in a tizzy with the hot Wayne opening up a gym, who unbeknownst to the residents, is actually married to Betty (the beautiful Patricia McPherson who was famous in Knight Rider).

I'm dismayed that Sally Struthers, who is a megastar thanks to All in the Family, didn't get top billing as special guest star. Not sure why.
