Mr Monk and the chimp
TheLittleSongbird24 July 2017
'Monk' has always been one of my most watched shows when needing comfort, to relax after a hard day, a good laugh or a way to spend a lazy weekend.

After the enjoyable if flawed season opener "Mr Monk Takes Manhattan", "Mr Monk and the Panic Room" continues that enjoyable if flawed streak. Although we are only two episodes into Season 3, Season 3 generally hasn't started off as strongly as the previous two seasons, Season 1 started off exceptionally and was a very solid season with the weakest episode still being pretty good. Season 2 also started off incredibly well even if not as consistent later on as the previous season and also contained the show's first not-so-good-episode.

"Mr Monk and the Panic Room" is a long way from one of the best 'Monk' episodes, but it isn't among the worst and is much better than what has been said of it on TV.com. It could have been better certainly, it is very obvious from the start that it was somebody else responsible, despite how it initially appeared their suspect for obvious reasons couldn't possibly have done it, and although not found yet the murderer had found a clever way (cleverer than initially thought) to commit the crime.

The identity of the real murderer at the end in a mystery of rather few suspects is as a long way from a shocker as you can possibly get, suspected them early on actually and was proved right which can spoil the suspense for me. The scene with Monk in the panic room is a little too over-written, too much of an overlong reaction scene for Monk and Tony Shalhoub overdoes it somewhat.

Supporting cast are a mixed bag. Faring best are the absolutely adorable chimp, who gives the episode so much charm and wins the viewer's heart straight away, and Stanley Kamel who has more to do than he did previously and seems to have gotten more used to Monk's quirks. Can't stand Carmen Electra usually, always have considered her a terrible actress especially in the Friedberg-Seltzer travesties, but while brief her appearance is a refreshingly quirky one and surprisingly well done. Willie Garson is wasted and the murderer is a very forgettable presence.

On the other hand, there is a lot to like about "Mr Monk and the Panic Room". One of the best things about 'Monk' has always been the acting of Tony Shalhoub in the title role. It was essential for him to work and be the glue of the show, and Shalhoub not only is that but also at his very best he IS the show. Have always loved the balance of the humour, which is often hilarious, and pathos, which is sincere and touching. It is remarkable here that right from the first episode to when the show ended that one likes him straight away, even with his quirks and deficiencies that could easily have been overplayed, and also that he is better developed than most titular characters of other shows at this particular stage. Who can't help love Monk's brilliant mind too?

He is very well supported by a sharp and no-nonsense but also sympathetic Bitty Schram, whose Sharona makes for a worthy and entertaining partner for Monk's sleuthing and somebody with a maternal side. There is always a debate at who's better between Sharona and Natalie, personally like both in their own way and consider them both attractive though as of now leaning towards Natalie as the better acted and more attentive of the two. The two are so enjoyable together and the best detective duo of any show in recent years from personal opinion.

Jason Gray-Stanford has little to do and is reduced to comedy relief, but this is something that he does well and it suits the character. Ted Levine is very amusing and the seesaw chemistry between him and Monk never fails to entertain. A lot of people disliked the interrogation scene between Stottlemeyer and the chimp, cannot bring myself to agree on this and there is a tendency with me to be on the same page as critics and general consensus. To me, the scene is one of the funniest scenes of the earlier seasons and of the whole show where Monk isn't the source of the humour.

It's not just the cast though. Another star is the writing, which is also essential to whether the show would be successful or not and succeed it does here on the most part, if a little overdone at times. The mix of hilarious wry humour, lovable quirkiness and tender easy-to-relate-to drama is delicately done mostly deft. The mystery is engaging and fun if obvious, and there are always great moments with Monk.

Visually, the episode is shot in a slick and stylish way, and the music is both understated and quirky. While there is a preference for the theme music for Season 1, Randy Newman's "It's a Jungle Out There" has grown on me overtime, found it annoying at first but appreciate its meaning and what it's trying to say much more now.

Overall, a lot to enjoy but not one of the best 'Monk' episodes. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Bubbles is innocent!

Warning: Spoilers
Here Darwin, the chimpanzee is accused of murdering his owner, a big league record producer, in the panic room. Not a bad episode, with Ted Levine going against type in the interrogation room when interacting with Darwin. Bubbles would be amused. This episode was directed by Jerry Levine. I'm not sure if he's related to Ted. Carmen Electra is the special guest star in this episode.

Makes no sense

Makes no sense they could just check the chimpanzee for powder burns like they would a person accused of shooting someone then they would know he did not do it. Darwin is so cute you cannot help but love him. This is one of the sillier episodes, but it is well done and cute. The show has contrived ideas as a whole, it is the general format of the show, the intricacies and great attention to detail make it believable and loveable. The final episode is one of the best ever. They never mention Aspergers Syndrome which Monk clearly suffers from along with his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Young Sheldon also suffers from this as well and they never mention it.

great episode!!!!!
miss-lucy-dolly-part-113 September 2006
my best friend ADORES Monk and has got me into watching it. i think it is a brilliant series and Tony Shalhoub is a great actor. i thought Mr. Monk and the panic room is really good and is one of my favourites i think the chimp is adorable (Darwin) my best friend does not have an account on here so i am letting her write something but still MONK IS FAB!!!

HI, monk is now one of my top shows i love to see, with the best, cutest and most talented actor I've had the pleasure to witness on television, the character Monk is such a heart warming, dysfunctional lovable person who although has a lot of problems he is just perfection in my eyes. *why dose the series have to end?* any who, i give it 5 stars and two thumbs up! HAPPY B-DAY FOR October! TONY SHALHOUB XxXxX

Hilarious

I just discovered this show over the past couple of months as I had been to busy for TV and never heard of Tony Shalhoub but I have now and I have been streaming it to catch up. I doesn't have to be so believable as this is a comedy drama and this was funny. Tony is a master of his facial expressions I love it and with that said I also loved Mr. Monk and the Candidate 1 and 2 and Mr. Monk and the Psychic and finally that arrogant science professor in Mr. Monk goes to school. Cant wait to get to the rest and then Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Shameful and lame to use a chimp
rdhoran8 June 2022
I must admit, I hate chimps on film. What people think is humorous is actually chimps grimacing, screaming, and being fearful. I do not understand why people are drawn to it.

Other than that, Monk is good in general.

A very rare miss

Warning: Spoilers
I like and watch pretty much every Monk episode when it comes on. There are a handful of GREAT episodes from start to finish and a handful of bad episodes. Whenever this episode comes on, I skip it. The worst part is probably the chimp noise. Just grates on my brain like fingernails on a chalkboard.

And Sharona is at her most annoying. I hated what went down with Bitty Schram leaving the show, though I did feel she was the weakest link. And Traylor Howard was an EXCELLENT improvement.

Skip this episode.

Too Unbelievable
Hitchcoc11 March 2020
If we start with a chimpanzee being able to aim a gun and deliver two kill shots, it's already in the Twilight Zone. This is so silly and the reactions to the monkey are so ridiculous, it just doesn't work. The only thing I really enjoyed was watching Stottlemeyer in a closed room trying to get the monkey to shoot at him. He really has the whole ape thing down.

Abysmal

Warning: Spoilers
A terrible episode.

The mystery was nonexistent. Besides the culprit being immediately obvious (which is true for most Monk episodes), competent police would have found the crawl space when examining the panic room.

The character moments were ludicrous & annoying: Monk panicking in the panic room. Monk letting Darwin trash his place. Monk putting up a for sale sign. Monk calling Darwin everything but a chimpanzee. Randy giving the Captain a loaded gun. Randy searching Sharona's place like he was in danger. The Captain not checking if the gun was loaded. The Captain acting like a fool with Darwin & not talking to others when they were trying to warn him about loaded gun. Sharona chastising Benji for defending a kid being picked on. No one but Sharona caring that Darwin fired once, randomly, which is nothing like 4 on-target shots. The culprit falling for "we can't move the recording device because it might damage the chip". Etc.

Not one of the better episodes

Character exploitation makes for a tiresome cringeworthy experience. Skip this one and keep going. A rare dud in an otherwise outstanding series.

This episode is so stupid, it's bad
snickzella25 June 2022
Apes in diapers are not funny. Apes in general aren't funny. Well at least when they aren't the main focus of a episode. There are several reasons why this episode sucks. But I think it's biggest reason, is the idea of a Chimpanzee shooting someone five times, is so idiotic and unbelievable given that's not how a chimp would respond in real life. Yes there have been documented incidents of apes pulling the trigger of a pistol or a rifle. However, they usually panic and the first shot, then run away. Plus, given how chimpanzee's are on the endangered species list, I doubt they actually put to sleep a animal for such an unbelievable murder. Also what the hell is Carmen Electra doing here? She is was only in one scene, and while I certainly am not a big fan of hers, if I was I would be upset that she wasn't in the rest of the episode, given how she's supposedly one of the perpetrators in the murder. Could they only afford to get her for one scene?, all in all this episode sucks.

Great for the kids
Movester18 December 2008
What started as a moderately entertaining show in episode 1 of season 1, quickly became overplayed, over-simplistic and generally childish, as effectively shown by this episode.

Watch how the captain behaves while interviewing the main suspect! Or the lieutenant moving about in the house: mimicking a red beret in a terrorist situation, with his gun pointing upwards. This is not funny - this is laughable. The simplicity of the story adds to the general impression that this in reality is Benji with humans. But Benji was better.

For kids only.

monkey murderer
nikkivisser12 April 2017
this reminds of the clever, hilarious , well-written Frazier monkey murderer in season 2 episode 13 Retirement Is Murder - just a coincidence? i had to add the following to make 10 lines.stupid rule. Frasier: Ah, yes. Another beautiful Saturday night. The moon is full,

the city lights are twinkling, lovers steal kisses in the park... and here, Chez Crane, my father and his assistant sit hunched over twenty year-old photographs of a murdered hooker. Life is a banquet. Daphne: I enjoy looking at your father's old case. Just because you have no plans tonight, don't spoil our harmless fun. You know, there's nothing we Brits like better than a grisly murder and a nice hot cup of tea. Martin: Uh, listen Daphne, I got a lot of work to do here, so if you don't mind...

Daphne: Oh, excuse me. I didn't know I was bothering you.

Martin: Oh, I'm sorry, it's this damn case. I feel like the answer

to who murdered Helen is right here. I just can't see it.
