Pretty Good episode except for
suzannemcneely22 March 2021
I do not like the last few seasons mainly because of the departure of Nancy Stafford and Clarence Gilyard. I did not mind Cliff (Daniel Roebuck), but I just couldn't stand his father, Billy. That is another main reason I disliked the last few seasons. Whoever decided to add him or write his character to be so damn irritating and unlikeable was either high or deliberately trying to ruin the series. This episode was good except for Billy. Every time he came on screen I just wanted to throw something at the tv or fast forward through them. His presence just ruined the episode. He's just a horrible man.

One man's (or woman's) poison is another man's pleasure!

Another reviewer mentioned her dislike of Warren Frost's character, Billy Lewis. Billy is Ben Matlock's Nemesis. He's everything he accuses Matlock of being...scrimy, cheap, duplicitous, vengeful and conniving. Matlock IS cheap in the sense he won't pay someone to do what he (thinks he) can do himself, often with hilarious results. I love Billy's character. If God was the vengeful type, Billy Lewis would have been God's revenge on Ben Matlock. An added bonus was the occasional appearance of Kathleen Freeman as Lucy Lewis, Billy's viper of a sister with whom he shared 40 miserable years back home in Mount Harlan.

Pretty good season opener.

Warning: Spoilers
Well, Leanne is gone and Jerri Stone is in as a new PI. I didn't like Leanne in her first episodes back in season 6. But I liked her in seasons 7 and 8. I miss that dynamic and banter between Ben and his daughter. They played off of each other well. Jerri Stone seems fine. Cliff is still there.

Ben goes to help an old friend, Ellen Barret in Wilmington. Billy and Cliff go too, as Billy says someone is interested in buying Lucy's beachfront house.

The murder mystery involves lies, blackmail, plagiarism, and of all things oddly enough, unions. I kept thinking at first, that Ellen was protecting the daughter. Like maybe she thought the daughter killed the man. But no, the case took on a whole different elaborate direction.

The prosecutor was such an oddball. I liked that.

Don't bury your funny bone or else you'll miss out on the fun! Billy was always meant to be sort of a foe for Ben to play his humor off of. You know, Ben's exclamations and expressions which are so funny? Yes, Billy can be annoying, but I find Ben's reactions to him very funny.

Anyway, a pretty decent opener to the final season. 8/10.

What I think about this episode
james_day19696 March 2013
I was in this episode! This episode consisted of 2 parts and I was in a scene with Daniel Roebuck and Andy! It was awesome! of coarse I was only an extra. I remember Daniel telling me about how grateful he was just to be working and that he knew of others who had much more talent. He was, and I guess still is to this day, one of the most humble actors I have ever had the pleasure of meeting! Andy was just awesome as well! I remember him apologizing to the director a few times when he did not know his lines. He was an absolute professional! I did not make it easy though because I was sitting at the eatery we were filming and had a potato, a fork, and a make shift salad there on our table. I drew a face in the potato and held it up just before the director said action and exclaimed to the people at my table, "Hey look it's Mr. Potato Head." Everyone laughed just as the director said "action." Andy then turned and looked at me and smiled! It was one of the best days of my life!
