One of the most controversial episodes of the series!
Sylviastel28 May 2009
This camping episode does deliver because it's funny, raunchy, and classic. It would be tame by today's standards. When the Bundys and Rhoades go on a five day camping trip in the woods, they take Kelly and Bud. Kelly is having her time of the month. Al, Steve, and Bud go fishing when the unthinkable happens. Peggy and Marcy join Kelly in having their time of the month which all makes for an unpleasant experience. While the cabin has no food for the moment, the animals sense women's cycles and are attracted to the cabin. A bear ruins Steve's car and traps the men together with the unbearable women. This episode was controversial then and now it is tame because the times have changed radically since this episode first premiered on television.

A resurrected episode.

Warning: Spoilers
I understand this episode disappeared for a while from the series, dealing as it does with menstruation, but it's not nearly as raunchy as some of the other episodes.

The Bundies and their neighbors, the Rhodes, rent a cabin in the woods for a few days of fishing. The women -- all three of them -- menstruate at the same time. That this happens among women living together is an established scientific fact. Experiments have ruled out causes connected with odor so there's something else going on. It's all a pretty mysterious business because no one completely understands pheromones and there is no evident selective advantage to synchronized menstruation.

Anyway, there aren't that many jokes built around it. The women glower and complain but not in particularly amusing ways. Most of the humor comes from the cabin's being surrounded by wild animals who attack Steve's Mercedes and Al's body. And those gags aren't outstanding either.

However, this IS after all an episode from the series when it was at its most imaginative and outrageous and is worth catching.

Periodically amusing.

Al and Steve arrange to go fishing during Al's week off, but Steve brings Marcy, who tells Peg and the kids. Everyone arrives at the cabin, but Kelly is grumpy. She has PMS. Pretty soon, all of the women's bodies have synchronised and they're all grouchy. Things get worse for the not-so-happy campers when the women's menstruation attracts wild animals, trapping them all in the cabin.

This is not the greatest episode of MWC: most of the gags are fairly weak, with just a few genuine giggles sprinkled here and there. When a show has to resort to a person in a moth-eaten bear costume chasing the main character wearing home-made antlers, it's not a good sign. Apparently this one was fairly controversial when it was first aired but now it seems quite tame.

Whoa Bundy (dvd)

So far, it's the best start of season: the fun is always on the top but the producers amazingly add new exciting elements:

first, the family goes out of their living room and invade a lot of different stages: library, football field, plane, wood cabin, beach, high school.

Second, the scripts find some really personal traits about men, women or teens (periods, baldness, barber, inheritance, party) that they happily destroy with absurd. Next, it's filled with the nostalgic flavor of the 80's (beta vs VHS, the first computers).

On the long run, i think that Peggy is really the weakest member because her character is very limited: couch potato doing nothing, shopping and sex addict. Thus, except the peeper episode (3.22), episodes centered on her (3.2; 3.12) or the endless discussion about food are a bit boring.

But, as she is often paired with Marcie, i started to notice two things: it's true that she has chicken legs because you can see that they look a bit like their arms, very thin! Next, at times, i find her really attractive and i think that the show has its message right: women can be as kinky than men but each with different ways.

As my best episode of this season, i pick this one because the idea of shooting one about periods show clearly why this show is unique! The library one (3.1), Poke High (3.3), the prophecy (3.8) or the dead barber (3.9) are particularly hilarious as well.
