Frank and Margaret; What Does She See in Him?

One of the interesting things in this series is the relationship between Frank Burns and Margaret Houlihan. There have been numerous episodes where Frank has made it clear that he is just using her, that when the war is over, she will be left in the dust. In this one, there is a mail delivery and Frank gets notified that his stock portfolio is doing quite well. Once Hawkeye gets wind of this, he hides a cryptic letter under his pillow (just a part of it sticking out), giving advice from a Senator concerning a can't-miss stock. Of course, he goes bananas, trying to sell all his stocks to purchase this sure fire stock. He tells Margaret he is about to be a millionaire. He offers to pay for an apartment and give her 25 dollars a week as a kept woman. You would think this would be the end of things, but..... Another subplot has to do with Trapper deciding to leave in a Jeep so he can go home to see his girls. Not a bad episode.

Mail time! I love the mail call episodes of M*A*S*H, along with when the characters are writing letters home, and this was of course way, way, before email and social media became the way to communicate and all. Maybe if there was a M*A*S*H reboot, the focus would be on these forms of communication. Anyway, Burns and Margaret have their on-again, off-again relationship that characterized the first four or so seasons, and it was hard to imagine this relationship going on and on and on, which kind of explained by Larry Linville eventually left M*A*S*H, and which pretty much wrapped up the original era where there was more madcap and all.

Klingers letters

The moment between klinger and colonel Blake alone makes this episode. All of Klinger's letters detailing the various deaths and or pregnancies in his family is just hilarious. Such fine writing.

In My Top 5 All Time Favorites

I am a MASH junkie since the late 70s. There was a time in the early 80s when it was on three times a day in L. A. and I never missed an episode, so I've seen them all multiple times, but this one stays in my top three favorites. There are more best one liners in this one for example " what's a drink without a nosh" I laugh every time like I never heard it before. The original cast was the best, Henry Blake, Trapper, and of course Frank Burns. 40 years later and I'm still watching the reruns. Let's hope they never stop running them.
