An assassination attempt on Mayor Cleveland (a dignified J.A. Preston) leads to an investigation on police corruption. Belker (an excellent Brice Weitz) experiences some complications while on assignment in Vegas. Hill (solid Michael Warren) and Renko (sturdy Charles Haid) make a judgment call that puts a store owner's life in danger.
The investigation into the assassination attempt on Cleveland proves to be a doozy because it uncovers dense layers of corruption with ties to some very rich and powerful people. The storyline concerning Hill and Renko points out the inherent peril on how working the beat on a continual basis can occasionally lead to perfectly good and competent cops making a bad call that has severe negative consequences as well as results in the pair getting a serious tongue lashing from Jablonski (Robert Prosky in peak huffy form). Paul Gleason smarms it up deliciously as the smug Biff Lowe, Jack Kruschen makes an engaging impression as an old buddy of Belker's, and Alberta Watson has a memorably sexy role as a prostitute who picks up Belker in a casino.
