Grab That Dough (#3.16)

Warning: Spoilers
Sophia has a great news. She has tickets for them all to go to Hollywood to participate in Grab that Dough. Only the trip is bad. Their luggage gets lost, their reservations are given away and they have to sleep in the lobby. At the show Blanche and Dorothy decide to team up with other players to get more money. And Rose and Sophia aren't happy.

There are some things in the episode that make no sense. Like, how could the brothers be so bad if they kept on winning shows, how did Rose know those things, how did they allow Sophia and Dorothy to e on different teams because it was an obvious advantage, which also doesn't make sense why Rose and Sophia were mad. But this is a sitcom, and besides that the episode was pretty fun.

Funny episode.

Sophia sends the girls into a frenzy when she produces tickets for big gameshow Grab that dough, they head to Hollywood, and have a few mishaps along the way.

Plenty of funny moments and some great one liners, it's definitely another of those unique episodes. The best moment had to be Blanche's introduction in the contestant introductions. Also loved seeing Dorothy playing Grab that dough.

I loved the way the lack of sincerity of gameshows a host that genuinely didn't want to be there, the stereotypical blond bombshell, and there are of course those awful prizes.

Better late than pregnant, only Blanche could come up with that one.

Funny, 7/10.

A calamity of errors

This episode relies heavily on bad luck to invoke humor, sometimes it works, sometimes not so much. Still a fun episode, love seeing Bea Arthur attempt to grab that dough.

Talk about Torture.

Warning: Spoilers
In spite of some genuine laughs, this episode does have some moments that are simply excruciating. They head to Hollywood (California, not the planet Romulack) to appear on the game show "Grab That Dough" and have nothing but bad luck. First, their luggage is stolen and mean-spirited hotel clerk Lucy Lee Flippin gives their rooms away, extorting money from them to allow them to sleep in the lobby. An inconsiderate maid wakes Blanche with her feather duster and then they have to walk to the studio. In spite of Rose and Sophia's early winning streak (after Blanche and Dorothy dump them), it's Dorothy who ends up in the money booth collecting it with her big meat hooks. Jim McMullan is delightfully pretentious as the host. But Flippen's character is completely obnoxious, and the competitive nastiness between the women is disturbing. Like "Dorothy's New Friend", it's a classic episode that is easier to watch for individual moments rather than the entire episode itself.

A dud

My wife and I have been watching the Golden Girls straight through from the first episode, and enjoying it for the most part (accommodating even for the old jokes and storylines that don't age well), but when we reached this episode we thought the writers and producers must have been taking a break that week and handed it over to the B team.

The guest acting is very poor overall (the hotel worker and gameshow lady hammed it up so bad we were cringing), and there are very few laughs. The only saving grace is the gameshow host who has the perfect tone and a few good lines. Not sure why folks find this funny unless they are diehard fans who like everything they churned out.
