The boss comes to dinner, but KAOS comes too

Warning: Spoilers
Max and the Chief are in a prolonged gun battle with two KAOS men on the wharves. Max stops to answer his shoe phone. It's 99 asking him to bring home some wine for supper. Noting that he is hiding behind a crate with wine, Max knocks an opening and takes one. He learns that 99 finished her assignment and got away from two KAOS agents by sending them to a pier. Max asks which one. She says Pier 47. Max says he wishes she sent them to Pier 50 because he and the Chief are at Pier 47.

At the apartment, 99 seems bothered by a nosy neighbor, a Mrs. Farkas, (well played by Alice Ghostley) who keeps insisting she call her "Naomi" instead of Mrs. Farkas. She has brought over a few flowers that she insists on setting on the dining table for 99. What we viewers soon learn is that she and her husband (Tom Bosley, aka Howard Cunningham from Happy Days) actually work for KAOS and are planted in that apartment to obtain information. There is a bug in the flowers.

Back at the shootout, before they wipe out the foes, Max gets the Chief to agree to come over for supper that night-without consulting 99-a typical thing a new husband would do. When the Chief arrives, he tells about a late night meeting at the Pentagon he will go to right after supper, and that's why he's carrying a briefcase with valuable information (is there any other kind) inside. Hearing this, the Farkas family figures to somehow take pictures of the information.

Before the Chief arrives, Max and 99 realize they don't know which of their wedding presents was from the Chief, so Max sets out everything they got, almost like a rummage sale. When 99 says she just meant to set out things that are appropriate, Max picks up a croquet set and puts it in the closet. He asks, "Who would give a croquet set to someone who lives in an apartment?" Enter the Chief with a large box. He observes the display of objects and is told it's just their wedding presents. Max says, "And we just loved your present Chief." He is oblivious to the large box in the Chief's arms. The Chief says, "How can you? You haven't even opened it yet." He then adds, "It's a croquet set."

During the meal, Naomi hears that 99 hasn't prepared anything for dessert and figures that will be how they work it. She'll poison a dessert just enough to make everyone sick, then when they are away, she'll have her husband take pictures of everything in the briefcase. Just when 99 enters the kitchen to figure out what to serve for dessert, Naomi knocks on the back door and tells her they had dinner guests that didn't show, so she's got extra desserts. 99 says "You're a lifesaver" and happily serves the chocolate mousse.

But 99 claims to be on a diet, so she doesn't eat any. Only the men get sick. Later Max learns that the dessert came from their neighbor and when he tells the Chief, he remembers the name Farkas and realizes they have KAOS agents for neighbors.

How they avoid disaster isn't necessary to mention here, but it involved a funny and surprising ending. One thing that seemed wrong. Before, whenever Max got food, he did so from behind the bar which was toward the back right of the apartment as we normally saw the room-away from the camera. Now for the first time, we see a room behind the door to the right of the entrance door. In fact, I believe this was the door of a closet where Max and 99 were locked in by the Chameleon just three episodes earlier. Now it leads to a full kitchen.

But from where the door sits, that would mean there is no hallway more than a few feet beyond the door to Max's apartment. This contrasts with many views of the hallway we've seen over the years. That's TV world. Need a new room, just stick it in wherever you want.

This was a very funny episode with nobody doing stupid, illogical things. I loved the bickering Farkas couple and the way 99 kept instinctively reacting whenever Max came up from behind her and belted him. She also clobbered the Chief accidentally while telling him how she does this to Max. It gets a solid 8 from me.

Fun with Farkas

Warning: Spoilers
One of the very best of the "Get Smart" married episodes. The cold opening is great as the Chief and Max are involved in a running gun battle at a pier when Max calls home to tell 99 he's going to be a little late. 99 admits she was almost late too, but lost a couple of KAOS agents by diverting them to a pier--the pier the Chief and Max are on! Max invites the Chief by for dinner that night. He and 99 don't remember what wedding present the Chief gave them, so they get them all out--except for a croquet set..."Who would give a croquet set to someone who lives in an apartment?" Not knowing Max had invited the Chief for dinner, 99 throws together an elaborate gourmet dinner. The trouble is, the Chief loves desert, but 99 didn't prepare any. Enter Naomi Farkas. Mrs. Farkas and her husband (Tom Bosley) are KAOS agents planted next door to the Smarts to keep an eye on them. When they learn about a valuable briefcase the Chief is carrying, they mildly poison a desert and deliver it to 99.

The jokes really work in this one and the battling Farkas family (they despise each other) are very funny and well cast. For a change the new relationship between Max and 99 does NOT seem forced and everything really seems to work.
