The Battle Over Wine & Martin's Torture and Reward
jmsfan17 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really like this episode as once again when one Crane brother gets something, the other brother gets jealous. I know some get tired of this, but I don't. I like it that they go through major trials in life yet still remain pretentious snobs. When Martin gets fed up with the whole deal and he brings Frasier down to the club, I busted a gut. Especially when Martin kept hammering at Niles in front of all the old wine club members with, "Are you gonna let your brother play? Are you gonna let your brother play?" And telling Frasier to "zip it!" Treating them like the grownup children they are.

Then there's the guest star: Jennifer Coolidge. She almost walks away with the episode as the hilarious German physical therapist, Frederica, who puts Martin through hell as he's slacked off on his exercises while Daphne is at the "fat spa." At first Frasier is concerned as he hears his dad scream in agony from the other room, then when he gets an interesting phone call about Niles and hears Martin scream again, he hollers, "People on the phone here!" 😆 One of my favorite moments in the series. But Martin (and Frasier) gets the reward of Frederica's marvelous cooking. Nice episode.

Forgotten But Not Gone

David Lloyd. When I saw his name down as the writer of this episode I relaxed a little. Because this was a man who knew the character of Frasier Crane, and more importantly, knew 'Frasier' as a show. And there have been a lot of new writers writing for the eighth series of the hit sitcom, and there was very much a sense of them learning on the job. Perhaps this was one of the reasons that the eighth series wasn't really that great on the whole.

If only more episodes had been like this one. This episode is great - it's smart, it's funny, it's got its heart back in the right place, and focuses on the sort of themes that make 'Frasier' great.

A rare bit of quality from the eighth year of the show.

Pretty Much the Usual

Frasier decides to try to do a wine show at the end of the culinary one at the station. He enlists all the pretentious members of his wine club, hoping they will call in for lively discussions. Unfortunately, one can't orchestrate a talk radio show. You have to be accessible. This was a bit of an empty effort.

My opinion

It's a funny episode but you do get the feeling that the show had ran out of ideas. They tuck to long getting niles and daphne together and did it all wrong. Would have been better to see them together without the donny and Mel upset because donny was a great addition cast member and Mel was just pointless.. Then Jane leeves was pregnant in real life so they had to improvise the weight gain and fat spa plot.. It all got abit boring. This episode has some funny moments tho it is abit same old same.. Niles has something, frasier is jealous so tries to one up niles, it doesn't work and they both end up with nothing.. Again..

Funny Lines Overshadowed by Funny Voices
centraltx15 March 2024
Some standard stuff from Frasier & Niles' competitive relationship. A couple of the other Wine Club members have some great lines that stand out in the episode.

The downsides of the episode were Gil's producer Lance and Jennifer Coolidge's performance. Both rely on outsized, silly voices that distract from average to solid writing. Lance's voice is so over-the-top, stereotypically gay that he makes Gil Chesterton seem like a down-to-earth character. He does however to have at least one funny line despite it, which is more than can be said for Coolidge as Frederica.

You can hardly understand how she, or anyone involved with the episode, could have ever let this performance continue beyond one take. She not only does not sound German, she barely sounds human and it extends to her walk, gestures, and facial expressions. There are lines that she plain doesn't seem to understand the meaning of, based on her cadence. She is beyond distracting and sinks the entire B-plot of the show. I watched, not absorbing a bit of the storyline but rather wondering what the other actors must be thinking as she shouted her lines through her nose and held her arms aloft behind her as she walked. I'm all for the career resurgence Coolidge experienced because of a great performance in White Lotus, but some people forget that her previous poor reputation had been well earned.
