The Need to Know

When Niles and Frasier see their dad in an emotional moment with a woman in a restaurant, they begin to suspect some things. Their suspicions lead to some nosing around and they discover secrets from the past that are unsettling to them. There is a very touching scene that shows there will be some moments of tenderness in this series.

I thought this was a great episode - the standard for 'Frasier' even in its first series has been so high and it's great to see.

Full of heart and humour, with a great twist at the end, it's amazing to see how quickly the cast gelled and that the writers were able to produce such gems so early on.

Yes, Niles and Eddie do tend to steal the proceedings, but the Frasier and Martin relationship is so lovely at this point in the shows run, as the two very different men try to bond, and it's all wonderfully played.

Overall, this is another strong episode from the golden era of 'Frasier', and one I would again highly recommend.

Interesting way to bring characters together.

If there is a main through line in the first season, it is Frasier and Martin reconnecting and learning to live together. Several episodes, i.e. Space Quest, take this dynamic for jokes. This early gem provides a solid explanation for the characters connecting-it is a common idea of sharing similar pain. But the writers found a way to shift it into a more interesting story decision. The episode brings together father and son by creating distance between son and mother. The episode handles the emotional material well but it could have gone wrong without the great cast.
