A very good episode though the ending is a bit of a downer...

Otis the town drunk receives a letter from his sister-in-law--it seems that she and his brother are bringing the family to town for a visit. This is a serious problem since they not only don't know that Otis is a failure but he'd given them the impression he spent a lot of time at the town jail because he worked there--not because he was a drunk. While Barney thinks this is all just Otis getting what he deserves, Andy feels sorry for the guy and agrees to pretend that Otis is one of his deputies! The ruse works very well and Otis comes off as a well-respected member of Mayberry society--but there is a very sad punchline at the end. I enjoyed it but know people who disliked the ending, as it was a bit of a downer. Regardless, it is an engaging episode and one worth seeing--especially since it provides for a bit more character development for the recurring character.

A Family of Alcoholics
Hitchcoc3 December 2019
Tired old plot where relatives come to visit thinking a character is living a life he has lied about. Otis tells his brother he is deputy sheriff. This works until brother comes visiting. Andy agrees to let him be a deputy while the brother is in town. The conclusion is a sad one. Alcoholism is not particularly funny.

Andy & Otis 2 hypocrites
vitoscotti3 April 2022
Hard ball Andy recently traveled to arrest an out of town speeder who skipped his court date. But here deputizes the town drunk. Otis has a lot of nerve balling out Ralph with his own drunken history. Never satisfactorily explained why Otis just doesn't go home after drunken stupors. Or why Barney is at the courthouse overnight sometimes and other times not. Otis has a very nice home for his seemingly always looking for a job. Funniest scene biggest laughs when Barney makes Otis recite his pledge, followed by an inspection. One of the funniest scenes in the show's history. Terrific final episode of season 2. I rated season 2 episodes an average of 8 out of 10.
