An excellent view on modernization
shoken5 March 2006
The Birthday is a short animation film about a man that lives in a small desolate house with his father and works in a slaughterhouse. His father is having a birthday, but he is too busy with his problems in the factory to notice it. The man gets in troubles when a cow doesn't want to get butchered and resists the machinery.

The surroundings in the film are depressingly bleak and grey all over, though wonderfully well made. Especially the sounds are great and fit in every scene perfectly. The changing of lights and shadows are displayed realistically, and many details in the house are fun to notice.

The cow's fight for her existence showed to me as an allegory of traditional way of life in modern society, and its struggle against bleak and emotionless machinery. Though there were also some quite funny scenes amidst all the gloominess.

The Birthday is an excellent short animation. Strongly recommended to everyone!
