I like this show for two reason. One is that I love dragons, and the concept of everyday people turning into dragons is motivational and exciting. Becoming a dragon is like expressing an inner strength. I also like how this show is written, the stories are interesting with lots of drama with the Rose/Jake thing, (I can't wait to see if Rose comes back!!)and I think its great that Jake let his friends Trixie and Spud in on his secret. I mean, being a dragon is a good thing right? The animation took a bit of getting used to, besides Jake the dragon the other dragons are pretty poorly drawn. As for the slang talk, I've come to almost like it, as it adds to the comedy of the characters. They are kids, after all. I give this show an 8 because for how well the stories are written, the interesting concepts, good voice actors, and the fairly well developed characters. It loses the 2 points to a 10 because of the poorly drawn dragons, and I feel that the whole dragon training thing should feature in a few more episodes. I want to meet more dragons!

When I first saw the commercials for the new Disney Channel original about a hip-hop wannabe kid who changes into a dragon, I shook my head and shrugged, but of course my kids couldn't wait to see it. After one or two shows I still didn't think too much of it, had some cute characters and some funny lines...but the more we watched, the better it got. Here was a rarity in kids' cartoons: a plot. Most kids' shows seem to avoid any ongoing plot line so they can show reruns indiscriminately without confusing anyone. This show, along with Nick's Avatar, command you to pay attention and tune in next week. The whole romance/secret storyline was very well done. My favorite moment was the oracle twins, particularly when the bubbly doomsayer told Jake "You have such a great attitude...that will come in handy when you learn the awful truth about Rose...(giggle) well, see ya!"

I disagree with a previous comment about this show. Yes, it is an anime wannabe, but maybe that's why it's sort of good. Instead of a plot less cartoon with nothing changing from episode to episode, there is character development and real confrontations.
Now, this isn't the best show out there (I HATE the new animation style) but it's not complete crap. Jake Long is a little stupid & yes cocky, but that's good. How many main characters are completely caring & try to do their best? It's good to have a character who every now and then acts like a real kid. Children, I think, can relate to giving up something they want to do so, that they can be responsible. This show teaches without preaching.
And yes, Trixie is VERY stereotypical. But I think the point is to try to show diversity - instead of a weak, token "girl", (& token black character) who is only there to show how "nagging" girls can be, Trixie is strong and intelligent- in other ways. She may not know "big words" but she understands the power of friendship & loyalty. She's in-your-face & sometimes just what Jake needs.
What drew my attention was the difference in the characters and even the plot. You have to excuse the "fad" of trying to be something else (ie: Japanese) and see it for what it is.

To be perfectly honest, when my little sister and I first saw the previews for American Dragon, we weren't too excited. The reason why: Disney's last two or three animated series weren't exactly...good. To say the least. Lilo and Stitch and Brandy and Mr. Whiskers didn't exactly give us much hope on the Disney channel original series thing. But a little more than a month ago I turned to Disney Channel because there was nothing else on. And I watched part of an episode of American Dragon (The one with the chalice and the genie. I can't remember the title.) and I was entranced by it. It absolutely rocked my world. I haven't been so excited about an American cartoon since Teen Titans. I've always loved magic, and I love the idea of both the normal and magical world coinciding with each other. And I love dragons. They rock my socks. I love Jake's attitude, and I love that it takes place in NYC. I love the dramatic irony in the beginning of the series with the budding relationship between Rose and Jake, and now I can't wait to see what happens in the couple episodes between the two of them, since now Jake knows that it's her. My love of this series has spread to the kids I babysit, who don't have cable, so I record shows for them sometimes. They have watched that tape about three times now. Since last week. I'm not sure if I can really capture with words how awesome I think this show is. I only hope that they keep it going. For FOREVER.

First of all, I like this series, but I think that some things simply didn't work which have to do with the Disney brand itself. That thing, especially, is evident in the first season and is the hip-hop lingo used by our main characters which honestly comes off as very forced and too exaggerated.
Disney has never quite exelled in being hip and cool with the youth, but that brings us to what actually does work in this series, because Disney does succeed in telling us fantasy based adventure stories with magical creatures and all that good stuff, and even though the set-up reminded me a little of the Ninja Turtles (a old wise teacher and a slacking young student, a counsil of magical creatures, a main villain looking like the Shredder) it worked okay on its own.
The writers could have done a little more with the magical world to make it seem an integrated part of the show, because honestly, it's pretty unevenly spread out in the show's runtime.
But the best thing about this show is the ongoing and well executed tough love story between Jake and Rose which is basically Romeo and Juliet, but well done and gives us a couple of heart breaking moments even for a kids show.
The humour is kind of hit and miss, but I enjoyed Fu Dog and Spud did have some chuckle-worthy lines here and there.
The art style changes from season to season looking cheaper in the second season, but in defense of that change, I found the writing of the show to be stronger in the second season, and I am of that conviction that movies and tv-shows primarily should be judged on the writing.

Okay, I remember when this show first came out. I fan-adored it. I actually came to dislike Jake and Trixie for their stereotypes. My favorite characters were Spud (AWESOMENESS) and Rose. I loved most things in it however (as long as bad-rapper Trixie was absent) and loved the plot, Spud (*sigh*), and the theme song (A. J. Trauth rocked). Then Season 2 came out. A horrible artist for the theme song, crappy graphics, and TRIXIE. If you watch the show,watch Season 1, and don't even bother with Season 2. Other things that bothered me was one episode (Dragon's Summit) that seemed to infringe on a book I've read prior. The idea for the show was great, Spud, A.J. as the theme song singer, and Rose were great. Most of the plot, Jake, Trixie, Fuu-Dog (???) were not.

This is the best show ever. I love it so much. I really don't like SS1 of the film because of the way the characters were drawn. It's just so childish and the story is so childish, too. But when I saw SS2 of the film, I watch it everyday, I can't stop watching, I fell in love with AmDrag since then. It's not just like other cartoons. It has action, romantic love, family, friends, things around us. The show taught us a lot of things, and really is a meaning show. Most of SS2 eps make me cry when I see the love between Jake - Lao Shi (Grandson - grandfather), Jake - Haley (siblings), Jake - his father, Jake - Rose (love) and Jake - Trix, Spud (friends). I save watched a lot of cartoons series, but only this show makes me cry, I am really attracted, the film makes me feel, think. This's not a show for kids only, the story of the film attracts adults. It's the only cartoon series has many fans who are more than 50. But Disney canceled the film, Disney ruined themself by canceling the best film ever. I love them more than anything else, I don't know if I can do something to bring it back, but if I know. I will do anything to save it. Let's show Disney that's they're all wrong to cancel a show like this.

American Dragon: Jake Long. Yeah. Much like what I said in my review of My Gym Partner's a Monkey, it's an example of a clever idea for a family/kids' cartoon gone to waste with glaring factors.
Yeah, I know the idea of a kid having a great power (in one form or another) that he/she must keep secret has been used a number of times before. However, it all has to do with HOW they use it and find ways to keep it feeling fresh. Did they keep it fresh here? I don't know--I keep getting annoyed by the characters' way(s) of talking.
I have seen two, maybe even four episodes total, and my attempt at hearing the characters (basically the main character) talk like a normal person is about as slim as winning the lottery--consider yourself lucky if you hear him NOT talk like some kind of rapper. If it happened VERY briefly, and every once in a while (say, 10 to 15 episodes in between), I wouldn't be as annoyed. But since they have it happen in every episode and in every other sentence . . .
The key in making a show or movie good is by making the characters likeable. But after hearing about 20-30 minutes of the character talking like a rapper (sorry for sounding like a broken record) and being all into himself, I find myself yelling "SHUT UP!" at the screen multiple times.
Case in point, while I give a LITTLE bit of credit for the idea ('Cause come on, a teen whose superpower is to turn into a Dragon? How cool is that!?), the show overall is just too annoying.

This show is the best! It has everything I could want in a show. The story follows Jake Long (Dante Basco), a 13 year old boy who has just found out that he is a dragon. It's pretty cool until he finds out the love of his life Rose (a wonderfully wicked Mae Whitman)is a dragon slayer. Other voice actors are John DiMaggio (Dr. Drakken from Kim Possible) as the hilarious talking dog Fu, Amy Bruckner (Phil of the Future) as Jake's 7 year old sister, Clancy Brown (Spongebob Squarepants) as Jake's nemesis the Dark Dragon, Jeff Bennet (Friday the 13th Part 6 or 7, Lilo and Stitch the Series) as Jake's idiotic father and Keone Young (Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi) as Jake's grandfather.

The whole Romeo and Juliet romance has been done way too much. ADJL is the if Romeo was Dragon and Juliet was a Dragon Slayor thing going for it. Of course It isn't complete without The Tragedy of Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra references. ADJl also references the movies Back to The Future, A Beautiful Mind and others I can't think of. It also draws on TV shows like Danny Phantom and Fairy Odd parents. Of course it's going to be like other shows people have seen because imo it gets harder to create shows that are original. This is the first show I have seen where the main character is half dragon which gives the show some originality. With most TV shows some episodes leave me feeling like I missed something. Season 2 of ADJL left me with a what did I miss something I hope it wasn't important. Season 1 I don't feel like I missed anything. Season 2 seamed a bit rushed like they wanted to finish and cram whatever they could in to the show as quickly as possible. Season 1 was a quick yet not too fast stroll through Central Park. This show left me wondering why convention centers aren't connected to the subway. What I liked about ADJL is that it made fun of it's self and Christmas Specials but not too much as to make people think ADJL hated Christmas. I'm glad the Christmas special didn't go all Charles Dickens with whole Scrooge thing. Like The actor who played PB said paraphrasing cause I can't remember exactly what he said, the problems in the show were wrapped up too quickly. Which seems logical for a TV show because the episodes aren't long enough to go deeper than a kiddie pool. Although the problems of one episode leaks into other episodes via there needs to be a plot the problems are watered down and easily written off with forgiveness with a twist of grudge.

OMG! the second season at first, i thought would suck because i didn't like the way that Jake was drawn but now that i watch it everyday i LOVE it!!!!
its way better than the first season, it has more Mystery between Rose and Jake and there's a HECK LOT of secrets behind every move they make, the directed and screenplay and movements..well, almost Everything is great!! anyone who doesn't like this show has no taste of Quality at all! its got a lot of interesting stories too and Jake doesn't whine a LOT anymore and nor does he..like..use a lot of 'slag'(i hate calling it slang!! it sounds normal to me!) and Trixie was kinda annoying in the first season but in the second i liked her a LOT and i like the little love NOT between Spud and The Cheerleader, and i Definitely LOOOVE Rose and Jake in this season..they work together and discuss a lot of things with each other which is so0 CUTE!!
and plus there are a lot of new characters on the show,( which sadly i missed a few episodes in-between because of my stupid homework!) but any-whoo, the whole season has more to offer than you thought of!and Brad isn't just a stupid Jock..but an ANNOYING, quick thinking..Jock!
Everything said in the shows is something VERY important and it all makes a lot of sense if you listen to what they have to say, and EVERYONE has a big part in this season, they aren't just EXTRAS like in some other shows or in the first season!

I really like American Dragon but what do I know, I'm 34? My neighbor (an 11 year old boy) loves it! He's a huge Harry Potter fan and digs martial arts and thinks American Dragon is "really cool". This cartoon combines Karate Kid and Harry Potter and is very clever, almost too clever I think at times for kids but again, I had trouble following Yuggio and I'm 34. American Dragon is Asian influenced but not Annimae, thank god, it still has that Disney coated gloss. Some of the jokes are hilarious but may go over the kids heads but I love cartoons with adult humor. There is a lot going on in this cartoon with a WB teenage drama mixed with magical creatures and superhero - Jake saves the day endings. Kids have a short attention span and there is enough here to keep their minds excited for the half an hour. Great fun!

I just spent the last half an hour reading through the other reviews and I don't know if I want to laugh or cry. There's no way that ADJL is like Harry Potter, Danny Phantom, Fairly OddParents, other then a secret magical world, which has been close to overdone. Also, no way is ADJL anime. Anime is very much a drawing style(and some will say more, such as plot and Japanese origin), either way ADJL is not anime so stop saying it is and if you're looking for something that is like anime, look else where, like Teen Titans and Avatar.
ADJL is typical. It's just like all the other Disney shows. An arrogant main character kid who thinks he knows everything and doesn't bother to listen to people who're older than him and continues to make the same mistakes. Best friend sidekicks. Repeative plot with a hint of a twist. And sibling rivalry. Can't they once make a character that has brains and isn't full of himself? Can't they have kids respect their elders? Can't they think of something different with the plot? Can't they have the siblings get along and not hate each other? ADJL is just too generic, because you also have bad guys that get defeated and come back again, and are also complete idiots, that have no background for their hate. C'mon, you'll think that someone who's at least 30 will be able to out-wit a 13 year old.

This show has got to be one of the best.It's brighter and more real then DP (which is also a pretty good show),is more modern then Avatar (good show) and carries a supenseful main property to it:The Jake and Rose relationship.Two young people who are born and raised to be enemies (though Rose more so then Jake),somehow find themselves falling for one another in their normal idenities.When they finally find out about each other,each has a different reaction and even though it all seems impossible,they manage to forge an alliance to stop the Huntsman from wiping out all magical creatures,overcome all those who oppose their relationship and still care deeply for one another.They both make mistakes and are very much endanger from being with one another if they are not putting on a fighting act.It will all culminate in the final episode Hong Kong Longs,after both make great sacrifices in Homecoming.If you haven't kept up with these two,then by all means you need to.There is nothing filled with more angst,love and action that you'll find anywhere else.Especially in a cartoon series.
It's kinda racist but other than that it's a good show.

I am not sure what review process exists at Disney but this show hits every stereotype in the book. It's like someone watched a lot of old stoner movies about New York and then wrote this script.
It's a good show and can easily be fixed and possibly be great if they redubbed the whole thing.

This show does not have particularly overdrawn characters. I am a girl who loves this show and does't get to watch it enough, although there are some faults. The plot lines are a bit wishy- washy and sometimes lopsided. There should be a bit more mystery within this mythical world and the only thing that is mysterious is the huntsman and the secret identity of Rose, (by the way has that been revealed yet? I think she'll be the hunts girl ). The ideas are really good, maybe a little more editing, but the overall idea itself is great. I mean, compared to demonic Yu Gi Oh this show provides a screening of beasts not seen by kids, unless they are all reading Greek and Roman Mythology which I highly doubt, (Some do, I know and I have read all the Greek and Roman mythology and I'm 12), so they are even getting a bit of culture. Sure, Danny Phantom did it better, but is he still on the air? No, and like many timeless classic TV series, they are replaced by copies for the younger generation. Jake Long is a great show and I think it is fine.

The first season was brilliant! It had great comedy and life lessons that were actually believable. Not even the stereotypical ones just basic human moral you learn growing up. The characters were all memorable and played there roles well. None upstaged the other no matter who was the main focus of the episode. That was quite and accomplishment. The plots were good and had a good build up and ending. The visuals were good too! Not ever done before so it was a nice change of pace.

After they changed the visuals it went down hill. The plots were much weaker and boring. Characters were more rebellious of there solid previous roles in season one that made them feel like different people. The change in the visuals actual made me nauseous as a kid and still does today (yes I rewatched it)!

Amazing,a great show

This is by far the best show on Disney Channel. It has a good mix of fantasy,romance and action. It's great if you're into dragons. T The story is about a kid,at the age of 13,named Jake Long. He's about your average New York kid,loves to skateboard,play games,and has two friends named Trixie and Spud. He has one secret however... He's the American Dragon. He is the first recorded dragon ever born in America. That's why they call him the American Dragon. His grandfather,Lao Shi,is also his teacher. He teaches Jake all the basics of becoming a dragon.Lao Shi is also known as Grampa,he's the Chinese Dragon. Or that's what they call him. Anyway,the show is overall good,it has some stuff that is similar to another animation called Danny Phantom,but that doesn't mean it's bad. It's a very good and interesting show. I rate it a 9/10. It's not Anime. SO many of you that think it's anime,it isn't.

Well... i see some people don't like this show - But I do! I've noticed the animation has changed over the years. This is a good teenage show about a hero (teenager who turns into a dragon). I find it entertaining... The show has its giggles and laughs and it can teach some lessons about life. For example, growing up and competitions. I like this show :). I was reading some of the other comments here, like the one on the actual webpage for this title. I agree with the reference to the older shows, and the television is coming out with shows that (for lack of better terms) suck. But, this particular show, I like.
Go Disney!. I hope it stays on family channel and the Disney channel.

hello. for all of you who think this show is stupid and is a copy it is def. not . and for the people who think this doesn't represent kids these days are really wrong I'm a teenager myself and too me this show except for the whole dragon thing seems almost life like for a cartoon if u listen too them there typical teens and there not showing stereo types cause Trixie and spud and Jake are all different yess but THEY ARE ALL FRIENDS which shows how different races can be best friends! and believe me the 'slang' might be annoying for older people and they might think its over done but come to a high school for a day Thats all you hear ! this show is amazing and i love how it has plots and twists! and for the people are saying Jake is Asian and he doesn't represent Asian culture good enough. HELLO his dad is an American ! hes not Asian . so hes dealing with the fact hes biracial which is hard to grow up biracial . so i think its a VERYYY good interpretation of teenagers today!

I absolutely love this show! Great characters, storyline, and theme! Where I am from this show comes on everyday at 5 am, so I record it every morning. Jake Long is humorous while teaching a lesson; and makes you appreciate the family you have and what you are blessed with. I adore Jake's friends Trixie and Spud, and of course Fu dog. His family seems to be the average family who raise their children to be hardworking, honest, and kind. I am excited to what happens during the rest of these episodes. I really hope that Disney will continue to air this TV show since it is among my favorites (including: Danny Phantom, The Wild Thornberrys, Ben 10, and Avatar:The Last Airbender) I recommend this show to any age. I am eighteen and I still enjoy this cartoon!
