The Amazing Brigitte Bardot Still Making Waves
ccthemovieman-19 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Since this was done quite awhile ago - 16 years - the episode begins with Brigitte Bardot shown and interviewed at the age of 68 in her private estate, about 500 miles from Paris. There, the narrator notes, she lives with her husband and 100 animals.

We see newspaper headlines of her involved in several controversies, and it is remarked that "this is a person used to controversy." As the show develops, we discover Bardot - whatever she did or is still doing - certainly is a strong woman of her own. You're not going to tell her what to do, or how to think, as France is trying to do to her today. She also had to be one of the first real victims of the paparazzi onslaught, which could turn anyone into a basket case.

In the beginning, we see Bardot's childhood and the effects it had on her. It's interesting see how Bardot's rebellion led her to do everything her parents didn't want her to do. She did not have loving parents, so she craved affection. She was in a ultra-strict environment, so she became a public sex kitten and was attracted to an older "bohemian" man. Yes, she wanted a father figure and Roger Vadim fit the bill, even sexually. Her parents didn't care for animals, so Bardot became an animal rights activist.

Discussing her career and romances, she has no qualms about cheating of husbands, as if that is nothing and to be expected. She brags about having sex with older man Vadim when she was just 14 or 15 and then having affair in her first starring role while Vadim was directing.

In this episode, liberal college professors and authors of books about sex, are the only ones you hear comment on her and the times, so it's no surprise they all love her immoral actions. It would have interesting to see someone give an opposite viewpoint, too, but you aren't going to get that on TV shows too often.

Bardot did look extremely sexy in her youth in the 1950s and caused quite a sensation in the United States and Britain. It's pointed out, rightly so, she had more of a slim, athletic-yet-sexy body, unlike the bigger Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe. Sexy films were nothing to new to France, so she created a much bigger stir in English-speaking countries, as noted on this Biography show. Bardot loved the attention, too, but by 1959 was getting tired of the constant press and stupid questions by reporters (sound familiar?). Those reading this know how bad the press hounds Britney Spears. Well, Bardot went through the same thing 50 years ago.

This episode also shows up many of the promos - the "coming attractions" - to her films. They are so corny, so stupid you will cringe listening to them. Of course, they were dumb for a lot of films in the older days.

Anyway, the rest of the Biography show - the entire second half of this hour-long episode, deals with her many boyfriends, lovers and friends and the very interesting switch in her focus in the last few decades. Retiring from films at 39, thanks in large part to the absurd paparazzi which helped drive her to suicide attempts., Bardot decided to stop pleasing men and please animals instead. She has been an outspoken advocate for animals, as many people know.

Recently she has gotten into trouble for speaking her mind about Muslim immigration in France. It's amazing - and frightening - that the powerful left wing in France and Europe actually censors people for speaking their views if it goes against their liberalism. She was condemned - get this - for supporting a Conservative candidate in France. That's reinforced by the idiot USC professor in here who calls the guy "a right wing thug." Funny, but you never hear about the "left wing thugs" on Biography, or A&E, or the History Channels. They are all owned by the same people. Thus, it's okay for Brigitte to campaign for Liberal causes but not Conservative ones. That's what is expressed on this show - and in France.

Well, too bad. Brigitte will always be her own woman and won't be bossed around by the PC Police or anyone else. She and her animals will survive.
