Better Than I Initially Expected
Uriah434 November 2023
This film essentially begins with a university student by the name of "Cho Se-young" (Shin Seong-il) getting shot by police while protesting against the corrupt government in Seoul. Fearing what would happen to him if he was arrested, Se-young barely manages to escape and seeks shelter at a nearby house which just happens to be inhabited by several prostitutes. Recognizing that he is in need of serious medical attention, they immediately send for a doctor who removes the bullet but then tells them that he is in serious need of blood and that it is in short supply at the local hospital. So, recognizing the seriousness of the situation and having the same blood type, one of the prostitutes named "Lee Nam" (Jeong-suk Moon) volunteers some of her blood to help him out. Not only that, but she also then tends to his wounds until he is able to take care of himself as well. And it's during this time that they begin to have feelings for one another. Even so, once he is fully healed, he temporarily leaves to find employment as a tutor for a powerful businessman named "Park Won-hyeok" (Nam-hyeon Choi) who needs one for his pre-teen son. Along with that, Mr. Park also has an older daughter named "Park Jeong-su" (Yeon Ju) who immediately falls in love with the handsome Cho Se-young. Yet even though Cho Se-young now has a place to stay, he continues to visit Lee Nam every chance he gets--and this draws the concern of Park Won-hyeok who has recognized the attraction his daughter has for the young man. So, being the rather forceful person that he is, Park Won-hyeok pressures Cho Se-young to set up a meeting with his girlfriend so that he can fully assess the situation. Once this meeting happens, however, it is then revealed that Park Won-hyeok knows Lee Nam only too well--and this immediately creates problems for all concerned. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this film turned out better than I initially expected due in large part to the acting abilities and the chemistry between Shin Seong-il and Jeong-suk Moon. The two performed really well together. Admittedly, I would have preferred a slightly better ending but, even so, I enjoyed this film for the most part, and I have rated it accordingly. Slightly above average.
