Father Laurentius is ordered to replace a colleague who usually attends to the wealthy, generous Wildleben family. He finds their housekeeper Ilona was murdered in the private sauna, but is warned by the police detective to keep off the case. After planting the convent's housekeeper as 'undercover' interim, Laurentius discovers a web of motives including infidelity, various contraband and blackmail.

The Franciscan monastery looses its guardian (superior). However it will receive an ancient cathedral treasure back, a crucifix luted by the Russians in Word War II. An Orthodox archbishop will deliver it to a delegation father Laurentius is to lead diplomatically with his Catholic archbishop. Alas, his previously unknown exact lookalike Schmitz and his partner Paula kidnap Laurentius, so he can pose as him to steal the crucifix. Simpleton friar Sebastian first smells a rat when the fake Laurentius is less helpful to hide the old, stinking dog Anka.

Friar Laurentius's police friend, detective Ursula Foges, is arrested for the murder of her adulterous lover Martin Neuroth's wife. While the police is under orders to prove her guilt, Laurentius seeks 'the real culprit'. Helped by lay brother Sebastian, he works on the assumption Neuroth's alibi is false. Thereto he needs to clear the jewel theft they were investigating.

Young Nina asks Laurentius to help find her twin sister Dagmar, who went missing after checking into professor Ullmann's beauty clinic, where staff denies having registered her at all. So Laurentius pretends to need plastic surgery himself so he can go snooping. His worldly sister Claudi Pöppel starts there as manicurist. Meanwhile brother Ludwig wants dancing lessons.

Whiel the convent's cleaning lady Marina Ciupka walks home late, she accidentally witnesses the shooting of homeless Dieter 'Fitze' Fitzmann by a hooded man. Laurentius convinces her to bait the killer. Most fellow monks safely travel to the Eifel, while cops mount guard, some undercover inside. Obvious suspects are two pilgrims and San Francisco fellow Franciscan friar Samuel, all demanding lodgings right now. A kiosk vendor tells Laurentius about Fitze's vindictive adult son.
