Blackened eyes, dirty shoes with paint squirred on them
I have noticed that the older Our Gang comedies featured a lot of bad behavior by the kids. And, as the films progressed to the sound era, they became more tame and less like little jerks. And, finally, by the time MGM bought the franchise from Hal Roach, the kids were incredibly nice....as well as pretty bland. In other words, the more rotten the kids were, generally the funnier the films! And, boy are the kids ROTTEN in this film!
The kids have a shoe shine business but aren't making a lot of money. So, they hide along the wooden fence and squirt paint on folks' shoes as they walk by...so that they'll then pay the kids to clean them! Additionally, they rig up a peep hole on the fence...and when folks look through it, it leaves black rings around their eyes and they look awfully raccoonish! What's next for these enterprising sociopaths? See the film.
This is an okay short...about average to slightly below average for 1924....but still a good bit better than later sound ones. I liked that the kids were jerks...but there were not as many laughs otherwise as I might have expected.
