SNL Video: Biden Blames Spider-Man for Omicron Surge, Reveals a Multiverse With Two Other Joe Bidens
Saturday Night Live came back from its holiday hiatus this week with a cold open that finally explains why the Covid situation got so topsy-turvy.
The sketch begins with SNL freshman James Austin Johnson’s typically confused President Joe Biden blaming Covid on something ridiculous. “When did Spider-Man come out? December 17th. When did every single person get Omicron? The week after December 17th,” Potus points out. “That’s really all I have to say; I yield the remainder of my time to questions.”

James Austin Johnson returned as Joe Biden on Saturday Night Live tonight, as the president offered his plan to curb Covid.
The show opened with Johnson’s Biden at a lectern, in another speech to the nation, as he leaned into the microphone and said, “There’s one simple thing you can do to make this whole virus go away.” The he whispered, “Stop seeing Spider-Man.”
“Think about it — when did Spider-Man come out? December 17th. When did every single person get Omicron? The week after December 17th.”
Then Biden took questions from the press, stunned at what they just heard.
One reporter asked, “Did you really just blame the entire spread of Omicron on people seeing Spider-Man?”
“I did. Yes. Next question,” Biden said.
“So you think all Covid will end if people stop going to the movies?” another reporter asked.
Biden replied, “I didn’t say, ‘Don’t go to the movies.

The CW Network announced today that Season 6 of flagship series Riverdale, originally slated to resume March 6, will now return with new episodes two weeks later, March 20.
The change stems from the rescheduling of the Critics Choice Awards. Postponed from Jan. 9 due to the current Omicron surge, the awards show, broadcast by the CW and simulcast by TBS, will now take place March 13, the organization said yesterday.
The rescheduled Critics Choice Awards would’ve pre-empted Riverdale just one week after the show’s spring premiere in its new Sunday 8 Pm slot. A March 20 start would allow for an uninterrupted run.
An original episode of the Hbcu Marching Band docu-series March will air from 9-10 Pm on March 6 as previously announced.
Based on the characters from the Archie Comics, Riverdale is a subversive take on the wholesome town of Riverdale and some of its teen residents, including Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead,...

A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit.
This week, interviews with Amy Pascal, Daniel Craig and Cary Joji Fukunaga on finding elusive Oscar love for the two buzziest blockbusters of the year, plus why Oscar screenplay frontrunners aren’t eligible for the WGA Awards, and why March is becoming the equivalent of a pileup on the 405 — awards-wise that is.

The Omicron surge has forced another change in the movie awards-season calendar, with the Producers Guild of America saying Thursday it has decided to postpone its 33rd annual Producers Guild Awards.
The ceremony, originally scheduled for February 26, will now take place on Saturday, March 19, still at the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel. Because of the postponement, nominations for the Children’s, Sports, and Short-Form categories have been shifted to a January 18 announcement date. Those had been scheduled to arrive today.
The winners in those aforementioned categories will be announced at the PGA Awards’ Nominee celebrations in Los Angeles and New York the week of March 15. Previously announced dates, including eligibility, voting windows and future nominations announcements, will remain the same, meaning the Theatrical and Animated motion picture nominees remain set to be announced January 27 along with the Television and Streaming nominees.

The zombie comedy from the Oscar winning The Artist filmmaker will no longer play Sundance as the festival eliminates its live-edition and opts for virtual given the Omicron calamities of late.
The movie, which also stars The Artist Oscar nominee Bérénice Bejo follows a small film crew shooting a low budget zombie movie. Events go south when they are attacked by real zombies. Michel Hazanavicius directed and wrote off a story by Shin’ichirô Ueda and Ryoichi Wada.
A statement from the Final Cut filmmakers reads, “We fully support Sundance’s decision to move the festival to a virtual format, as the safety of audiences and filmmakers is of paramount importance. However, we believe that it is best to premiere Final Cut in a theater with a live audience and have made the difficult decision to remove the film from this year’s festival. As we get rolling into the new year, optimism and caution are part of the outlook for 2022 at the international box office. The issue of China also remains top of mind as the territory — which maintained its status as the top global market in 2021 — has been even more ornery to navigate than usual, notably not approving a single movie with a Marvel character last year, from Disney’s Black Widow straight through to Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Before we dig further into China, however, let’s take a look at the overall international picture.
Seeking A “Version” Of Normal Moviegoing
No Way Home may prove to have been a pivotal turning point in hindsight, but Omicron is still out there, piracy remains a concern, and Q1 is looking like it may be soft. Studios consult epidemiologists, and based on those discussions, some execs expect the overseas landscape to...

While the pandemic caused the delay of Jackass Forever last fall, it looks like even with Omicron on the rise, Paramount is pushing forward with an early February release for what will presumably be the gang’s final outing. After Bad Trip landed on our top 50 films of last year, which Jeff Tremaine produced, he’s back in the director’s chair and now one last trailer has landed.
Featuring the return of Johnny Knoxville, Steve-o, Chris Pontius, Dave England, Wee Man, Danger Ehren, Preston Lacy, and more, their fourth, ball-busting feature is among our most-anticipated of the year. Judging from the trailer, it will be quite a hilarious and even a bit wistful of a reunion as Knoxville and crew reckon with the limits of our mortal bodies.
See the trailer and a new featurette below.

I have always been a sucker for comeback stories, especially at a time like this when careers veer dramatically between triumph and cancellation – though some comebacks may raise questions (see below).
In the world of corporate suits, I admired Alan Horn’s remarkable comeback at Disney after Warners abruptly declared him excess baggage. Or Ron Meyer emerging as the boss of Wild Bunch after Universal cut him loose. Or even Paramount levitating Brian Robbins to studio chief after his Eddie Murphy movie bombed (Eddie cast as a literary agent in A Thousand Words!).
At another level, I was impressed by Bill Tennant’s fortitude in reinventing himself as a highflying talent manager after plunging into drug addiction and homelessness – becoming a role model for the similarly afflicted.
On the talent side, the Tom Cruise legend was famously crunched when he was “fired” by Paramount and Valkyrie bombed, only to be...

It’s been over five years since the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Roger Waters, and the Who came together on the Coachella grounds in Indio, California for one of the most gargantuan classic rock events in history. The official name was Desert Trip, but many fans simply called it Oldchella or Boomerstock. They staged the event across two weekends and grossed an astounding $160 million (though you had to basically mortgage your home to afford the tickets).

Exactly a year after the winter 2021 Covid surge delayed post-holiday break return to production on most TV shows, the Omicron variant’s ultra wide spread is once again interrupting TV production.

“Are you really doing a domestic box office marketshare piece?”
Such is the whine from several studio insiders and Corp Comm folk.
Of course, we are. Why wouldn’t we? In the best and worst of times, in the published horserace of box office dollars, we still need to know where the studios stand when all the dust settles, even if the pandemic kept business at bay with $4.55 billion for 2021 in U.S. and Canada, below the expected $5.2 billion.
What continues to frustrate many major studio theatrical executives in this annual exercise is how the Disney-Fox merger continues to tip the scales in both a global and domestic box office race.
Disney is clearly counting all of their labels–Disney, 20th Century Studios and Searchlight, and proclaiming themselves the winner with $1.17 billion in the U.S./Canada (+180% over 2020) and $2.9 billion global. Stateside that translates into 27% of the $4.55 billion 2021 domestic B.

As the Sundance Film Festival anticipates many returning in-person for their 2022 hybrid event, organizers are taking extra safety precautions with the latest headlines of Omicron, one of which is reduced capacities at movie theaters, screening rooms and festival-sponsored events.
In addition, no concessions will be sold or consumed at theater venues so as to provide a situation where moviegoers keep their masks on during all screenings.
These new guidelines for Sundance are similar to what TIFF was enforcing back in September: Their theaters operated with reduced seating and popcorn, soda, candy etc weren’t sold. In an interview with ABC News, President Joe Biden repeated previous plans to run for re-election in 2024 — especially the race ended up a rematch against his 2020 opponent, Donald Trump.
Asked by World News Tonight anchor David Muir during an exclusive sit-down in the White House about whether he will seek re-election, the 79-year-old Biden answered, “Yes.” He elaborated, with a slight hedge: “I’m a great respecter of fate. Fate has intervened in my life many, many times. If I’m in the health I’m in now, in good health, then in fact I would run again.”
Some supporters have called on Biden, the oldest U.S. president ever to be sworn in, to step aside after a single term in order to make way for the next generation of Democrats.
When Muir asked Biden if he would run even if it meant squaring off against Trump, the president broke into a wide smile.

Broadway’s recent and ongoing surge in Covid cancellations is one of those shocking but not surprising things – New Yorkers knew instinctively since theaters reopened in September that disappointment was always just a cough away. Still, the spate of cancellations – with, it must be repeated, only one permanent closing to date – is disheartening to say the least.
So why now? And what now? Is there anything else Broadway should be doing to lessen the impact of the Omicron variant? The Broadway League has indicated that another industry-wide shutdown is not being considered, and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio stated bluntly this week, “No more shutdowns.”
At the moment, Broadway is battling Covid with various weapons – testing, vaccinations, masks, filtration – and while the approach is more rigorous than what can be found in other industries, the fight doesn’t always seem to reflect a unified front. While all theater workers and audiences must be double-vaxxed,...

Deadline has confirmed that Disney+’s red carpet Hollywood premiere for Star Wars spinoff series The Book of Boba Fett has been delayed from Jan. 4 at the El Capitan Theatre to Feb. 8. This is all because of Covid concerns in the face of the spiking Omicron variant.
The show debuts on the streamer on Dec. 29, and the delayed premiere will celebrate the season finale instead.
Expected guests were Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Robert Rodriguez, Kathleen Kennedy and Ming-Na Wen, with more to be announced in the future.
Variety first had the news about the premiere postponement for The Book of Boba Fett.
Earlier this week because of Omicron, Hollywood events canceled including the Palm Springs International Film Festival in-person awards gala, and BAFTA tea party. AFI Awards luncheon is postponed, but the Critics Choice Awards on Jan. 9 will remain a live telecast.

Earlier this week because of Omicron, Hollywood events canceled including the Palm Springs International Film Festival in-person awards gala, and BAFTA tea party. AFI Awards luncheon is postponed, but the Critics Choice Awards on Jan. 9 will remain a live telecast.

Several projects were featured in the clip, including Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon, the Suicide Squad spinoff Peacemaker, and Season 4 of Westworld.
Also teased was Season 3 of Barry, Season 2 of The Flight Attendant, Season 2 of Euphoria, and the Harry Potter 20th anniversary special.
There were also scenes from The Gilded Age, The Time Traveler's Wife, The Whitehouse Plumbers, We Own the City, Gossip Girl, and the Pretty Little Liars reboot.

It’s going to be a really rich Christmas for exhibition, Sony and Marvel as Spider-Man: No Way Home barrels toward potentially the third-best second weekend ever with around $143M over the long Christmas period of Dec. 24-27.
Already, through four days, the Jon Watts MCU title counts $297.2M in the U.S. and Canada, 3% ahead of December 2015’s Star Wars: Force Awakens over the same frame.
But what does this spell for other major studios with big event movies? While it’s a question always asked during pre-pandemic Christmas periods whenever a single franchise movie sucks up the oxygen, it’s a more dire situation during a time when many wonder if Omicron will truly take its toll at the year-end domestic box office. Will Spider-Man: No Way Home be the only draw on the marquee, a repeat of Christmas 2015 when Star Wars: Force Awakens ruled and only one...

UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has unveiled an extra £30M ($40M) to help theatres and museums in England impacted by the Omicron variant, while cinemas can apply for grants of up to £6,000 per premises.
The move comes as UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed there will be no new Covid measures in England before Christmas but said curbs could be imposed next week once more data on the Omicron variant is available.
Omicron has been causing mass cancellations of trips to cultural venues in the run up to Christmas, with Covid-19 case numbers just shy of 100,000 per day and Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently mandating for masks indoors and vaccine passports for plus-500 capacity venues. West End theaters have been pulling shows, with James Graham’s Best of Enemies and the Jessie Buckley/Eddie Redmayne-starring Cabaret both delayed until January.

Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home raked in $37.1M on Monday, making it the third best for that day ever behind 2018’s Black Panther ($40.15M) and 2015’s Star Wars: Force Awakens ($40.109M). The running total for the MCU title stands at $297.2M through four days. Indeed, headlines about the looming Omicron, aren’t impacting ticket sales, and we’re not hearing any whispers about reduced capacities at U.S. theaters, nor any news that they’re bound to close.

Jagged Little Pill, the Grammy and Tony Award-winning musical inspired by Alanis Morissette’s 1995 album of the same name, is closing for good, The New York Times reports. It’s the first major Broadway show casualty ending due to Omicron.
The news comes following the production suspending performances beginning last Saturday, citing “a limited number of positive Covid test results.” On Monday night, the producers announced the show would end its run for good.

Stars in the House, the YouTube and streaming talk and performance series hosted by Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley since the March 2020 Broadway shutdown, will feature a special episode tonight focusing on the new Omicron variant and what it means for Broadway.

Also joining them throughout the episode with their own questions about Omicron will be Broadway’s Audra McDonald, Jagged Little Pill cast members Elizabeth Stanley, Lauren Patten and Kathryn Gallagher, Hamilton‘s Miguel Cervantes, and Christine Toy Johnson from the Come From Away national tour.

Plans are underway for the Berlin Film Festival to take place in February as a physical event with movie theaters at full capacity, the same number of films as in pre-pandemic times, and a red carpet visible to fans.
Yet given the highly transmissible nature of the Omicron Covid variant, Berlinale executive director Mariette Rissenbeek and artistic director Carlo Chatrian are realistic that major changes will need to be enforced in order for the fest’s 72nd edition and European Film Market, scheduled to run Feb. 10-20, to go ahead amid the pandemic.
For one, there will be no parties. And in terms of international talent and guests making the trek, the ongoing spread of Omicron is likely to take its toll, though it’s unclear to what extent. Also, masks will be mandatory not only in cinemas, but also in outside areas where festival goers congregate, such as the red carpet.

Not all talent affiliated with Warner Bros.’ 2021 film slate was too keen when the studio announced that its entire run for this year would go day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max. “Tenet” director Christopher Nolan blasted the window-shattering shakeup and expressed disbelief, while “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve wrote an op-ed bemoaning Warner Bros.’ triumph of corporate allegiance over a love for cinema and audiences.
Well, “The Matrix Resurrections” star Keanu Reeves isn’t as passionate about the matter. As revealed in a new interview with The Guardian, the actor is perfectly fine with audiences streaming the movie.
After the interviewer implied they were going to watch the movie on their laptop, Reeves said, “Dude? Don’t stream that movie… Don’t you fucking stream that movie.” But this turned out to be a poker-faced joke, as Reeves ultimately said, “I mean, sure, stream it if you have to.”

Saturday Night Live‘s final episode of the year was also one of its strangest, due to last-minute measures taken in the wake of the Omicron Covid variant surge in NYC.
On Saturday afternoon, NBC’s sketch comedy series announced it was forgoing its live studio audience, as well as limiting the number of cast and crew that would be on set for the production. (Shortly after, musical guest Charli Xcx bowed out of her performance entirely, stating that the limited crew would prevent her team from bringing “the most amazing musical performance to life.”) The New York Post went...

With lines for Covid-19 testing snaking down the sidewalks, and messages announcing closures posted on the shuttered doors and Instagram accounts of local businesses, New York City residents have been witnessing scenes this week that they hoped they’d never see again. That’s because Covid-19 has once again been making its way across the city, to the tune of nearly 4,000 new cases each day: the highest those figures have been since last April, before vaccines were widely available.

• 1 part that story about the grandma who accidentally invites a stranger to Thanksgiving
• 3 parts Rear Window

“I’m back!” declared Kate McKinnon as Dr. Anthony Fauci in the opening seconds of Saturday Night Live tonight to a roar from the audience.
“Do we both still think I’m sexy or are we done with that,” added the late-night Mvp in her beloved role as the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director and first time back on SNL this season.
Off this fall shooting her Joe Exotic series for streamer Peacock, McKinnon’s already announced return was a welcome relief after many a flameout of a cold open this 47th season of SNL. However, the rest of the skit went south pretty quick for a while as the show had various other cast members playing CDC staffers acting out frequently asked Covid-19 holiday questions in this season of Omicron variant. “They are not professional actors, they’re simply nerds trying their best,” McKinnon’s Fauci explained,...

Season 21 of The Voice has been a roller-coaster ride for viewers. Excellent singers like Team John Legend’s Samuel Harness have been eliminated. Dubious ones like Team Ariana Grande’s Jim and Sasha Allen have gotten further than arguably they should’ve. And somehow Team Legend’s superlative Jershika Maple was forced to sing for the Wildcard Instant Save during Tuesday’s Semi-Finals Results Show.
At least she did, in fact, win the Instant Save.

Even if you didn’t have a calendar, you’d know it was December. How? Because this weekend the box office felt a lot like that old holiday tale where not a creature is stirring, not even a mouse. With no major new releases hitting multiplexes there wasn’t a lot of movement on the charts, as Disney’s family-friendly Encanto once again finished in the top spot with a $12.7 million haul in its sophomore session. Consider it the quiet before the storm—what with West Side Story, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and The Matrix: Resurrections all ready to be unwrapped in the coming weeks.
With the new Omicron variant making headlines and folks hustling to shop for the holidays, movie ticket sales were especially light over the weekend—roughly half of what they were over the Thanksgiving frame. Of course, the drop off in attendance probably also had a...

With two weeks until opening day, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” established a Covid-era best in advance ticket sales. Fandango reported that it outsold all films since “Avengers: Endgame” in April 2019. Even as Omicron renews pandemic anxieties, core fans are ready to commit.
The box-office appeal of an enduring superhero may be stronger than Omicron, but what about everything else? Theaters need to see that a weak November was the outlier — not the elevated October led by “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.”
IndieWire’s box-office estimate for October was right on target, but we leaned pessimistic for November; the guess was it could gross 65 percent of November 2019. Turned out that we were off by 10 points. Total domestic box office for the month is around $525 million, or 55 percent of 2019. Normally, the month of November improves on its predecessor by about 40 percent. This year, it smashed records with a shortfall of 17 percent. Ouch.

A breezy five-episode compilation movie about swindles plays out in five film capitals, under the eye of five different directors including Claude Chabrol and Jean-Luc Godard. But Roman Polanski’s Amsterdam segment couldn’t be included, which is a shame. It’s in B&W ‘scope, and everybody gets to bring their favorite cameraman and composer along.
