Malachy McCourt, the Irish-American actor, raconteur and author best known to TV audiences for his long-running role as Kevin the bartender on ABC’s soap Ryan’s Hope, died today in Manhattan after battling a heart condition and cancer. He was 92.
His death was announced by his wife Diana McCourt to The New York Times.
The brother of Pulitzer Prize-winning Angela’s Ashes memoirist Frank McCourt, Malachy McCourt left an indelible mark on New York City’s Irish American community. As the owner of the quintessential 1950s Irish pub Malachy’s on Third Avenue in Manhattan – McCourt would often call it the city’s first singles bar, since he welcomed unaccompanied women to the establishment – the Brooklyn native became one of the city’s great story-tellers, regaling patrons from longshoremen to the actor Richard Harris with blarney, rugby talk and biographical anecdotes.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Trina McGee, who played Angela Moore on the hit ABC series Boy Meets World, has opened up about her character–particularly how she wasn’t featured on the series finale.
On a recent episode of the podcast Pod Meets World–in which former Boy Meets World stars Rider Strong, Danielle Fishel and Will Friedle rewatch episodes of the beloved series–Trina McGee went into details surrounding her lack of involvement and Angela’s absence.
“I was told, in kind of a weird off-handed way by a very important person, that you guys all went to [showrunner] Michael Jacobs, and you said ‘We don’t want her in the last episode. She’s somehow taking our light.’ That was the gist of it.”
Friedle, who played dopey older brother Eric Matthews for the show’s run, denied Trina McGee’s history, to which McGee responded, “I believe you. I can tell by [the hosts’] reactions.

The Quiet Girl is one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. It is perfection. It is impossibly small, and emotionally immense. This is the sort of film that creeps up on you slowly, in ways that you don’t realize are happening, until you are so utterly overcome with emotion that you don’t quite know how to digest it. It’s the sort of film that you sit through the entire end credits of, not because you are wondering which Marvel character will make a surprise appearance after them, or to be polite to the artists and craftspeople who made it, but because you simply cannot move, you’re that overwhelmed.
Honestly, it’s been a long time since I felt like it was disrespectful to the cinema audience that when the lights come up, you are expected to leave. I could have just sat alone...

On March 26 1969, on a quiet country road outside Biloxi, Mississippi, John Kennedy Toole took his own life. Aged just 31, the literary professor and author left behind two unpublished novels. Over the course of the next decade, Toole’s grieving mother Thelma dedicated her life to ensuring the second of these, “A Confederacy Of Dunces,” found publication. Eventually, she succeeded, and the New Orleans-set picaresque tale of slovenly philosopher and medievalist Ignatius J. Reilly went on to sell over two million copies and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1981, making Toole one of only three writers to win the prize posthumously.
Almost as much as the book itself, readers were intrigued by the unique journey the novel took to publication, with a flamboyant yet grief-stricken mother dedicating what remained of her life to ensuring her son’s genius was recognized by the world.

Alan Parker is not one of the name auteurs you learn about in Film History 101. That’s partly because he wasn’t known for doing one thing. The working-class Londoner made his mark in the 70s with commercials and television before breaking out with period child-gangster musical “Bugsy Malone” (1976), starring Jodie Foster. He died Friday morning at age 76.
True story “Midnight Express” (1978) took viewers on a harrowing descent into Turkish prison hell (starring Brad Davis as Billy Hayes), established Oscar nominee Parker as a taut manipulator of suspense, and won Oscars for screenwriter Oliver Stone and composer Giorgio Moroder. In drama “Birdy” (1984), Matthew Modine and Nicolas Cage went on another unpredictable journey, from kids hanging in Philadelphia to soldiers fighting in Vietnam and finally, a grim hospital ward.
Always skilled at using music in his movies, from New York high-school musical “Fame” (1980) to Madonna vehicle “Evita” (1996), Parker became a stylish Hollywood director-for-hire.

Innovative and acclaimed British director Alan Parker, died Friday, July 31, after a lengthy, but as yet undisclosed illness, according to Variety. He was 76.
Parker was nominated for two Best Director Oscars. One of those films was 1988’s Mississippi Burning, which highly dramatized the investigation of three murdered civil rights activists in 1964. The films starred Willem Dafoe and Gene Hackman, with the latter being nominated for Best Actor. Parker’s first Oscar nomination though came for the 1978 drama Midnight Express, another film based on true events. Oliver Stone won his first Oscar for the screenplay, which focused on Billy Hayes, who escaped a Turkish prison after being convicted of trying to smuggle hashish out of the country. Giorgio Moroder also won his first Oscar for composing the music. It was Parker’s second feature, and it was vastly different from his debut.

Netflix has confirmed most of its upcoming content for July, so it’s time to take a look at what’s on the horizon. It’s a quiet-ish month for the streaming giant, but we assume it’ll only get quieter in the next part of the year as the industry shutdown continues to impact release schedules everywhere. Nonetheless, Netflix still has some intriguing projects to offer, for the time being.
July will see the return of The Umbrella Academy for its highly anticipated second season, but Netflix also has a few new gambles in the form of its Unsolved Mysteries and The Baby-Sitters Club reboots, along with a brand new spin on the Arthurian legend with its Lady of the Lake series, Cursed. Elsewhere, Charlize Theron stars as an immortal badass in comic book adaptation The Old Guard and we’ll take another trip into teen rom-com territory with...

Hollywood may still be shaking off its awards-season hangover, but before it puts the tuxedos and gowns back in storage, Variety wants to take a look at some of the films that seem destined to dominate the next Oscars race.
It’s true that on paper many movies that now appear earmarked for awards greatness may collapse on the shoals of audience indifference or fall prey to a good old-fashioned critical savaging. Why, this time last year, “The Goldfinch,” an adaptation of Donna Tartt’s beloved best-seller with Oscar winner Nicole Kidman and Ansel Elgort, looked like a certified best picture contender. Those dreams deflated when audiences actually saw the movie or, more to the point, chose not to see the movie.
Still, sight unseen, there’s a crop of films that studio executives and awards consultants already have on their radar. In part, that’s because of the track...

A bullish Parker yearned to gatecrash the film industry and do things differently. Against the odds, his dreams came true
If Sir Alan Parker ever felt the urge to shoot a Horatio Alger story, charting the hero's journey from working-class upstart to establishment lion, then the rough draft is sitting right under his nose.
The protagonist starts out as a chippy young hooligan, purple-faced beneath a pageboy haircut. He winds up white-haired and well-upholstered, a pillar of whatever passes for the British film industry these days. To misquote John Huston in Chinatown: "Politicians, whores and Alan Parker. They all get respectable if they stick around long enough."
Parker has directed some decent, clamorous pictures (Bugsy Malone, Mississippi Burning, The Commitments) and some dodgy, clamorous pictures (Evita, Midnight Express, Angela's Ashes). He is a knight of the realm and a former chairman of the now defunct UK Film Council.

For more than two decades, Robert Carlyle has been a familiar face in projects on both sides of the ocean, becoming one of the most reliable players on TV and in the movies. Of course, he's likely best known for playing the deliciously deranged Begbie in "Trainspotting," but roles in "28 Weeks Later," "The Full Monty," "Angela's Ashes" and more have solidified him as a true talent. And while it's not often that we seem him in a lead role, when the opportunity arises it's likely one worth checking out, and you'll get a chance soon with "California Solo." Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the film from writer/director Marshall Lewy ("Blue State") finds Carlyle playing a former Britpop rocker living in the United States, who finds himself facing deportation. We've got the exclusive poster for the movie, which you can check out below, but first here's the full synopsis.

The small village of Cong in Galway has became a Mecca for all “Quiet Man” fans. Michael Collins Starring Liam Neeson, as Michael Collins, and Alan Rickman, as Eamon De Valera,...

Some critics have accused Paddy Considine's gritty directorial debut of being misery tourism for the middle classes
Natalie Haynes, broadcaster and critic
So, here's my problem with Paddy Considine's directorial debut feature film, Tyrannosaur: I think it has some tremendous acting paired with a script of such unceasing bleakness that, when I reviewed it, like a number of critics, I had no idea who I could recommend it to.
It opens with Joseph (played by Peter Mullan) leaving a betting shop and kicking his own dog to death. Hannah (Olivia Colman) is a Christian woman running a charity shop who tries to help him, but provokes a violent response from her psychopathic husband (Eddie Marsan). Joseph's neighbour – a little boy – is repeatedly bullied by his mother's boyfriend and seems in constant peril from the guy's vicious dog. I don't want to give the ending away, but there...

In her latest film, Emily Watson plays a social worker who battled to reunite British families with children forcibly sent to Australia, a role made more poignant by losing her mother as filming began
I can't believe I haven't met Emily Watson before. But I know why she seems familiar: it is because of her performance in the tremendous new film Oranges and Sunshine, directed by Ken Loach's son, Jim Loach. It is Watson's outstanding gift as an actress that she appears not to "put on" an act at all. She rejects ornament. She pares roles down. She gets to the heart of things and the result is as close to a personal encounter as you can get on screen. The film is based on Empty Cradles, a memoir by Nottingham social worker Margaret Humphreys, about the scandal of the 130,000 unaccompanied children sent to Australia between the 1920s and 1960s.

The BFI's assumption of the UK Film Council's responsibilities continues a decades-long saga of chopping and changing in the British film industry
This morning's announcement by Ed Vaizey confirms the rumours that have been circulating from pretty much the moment that the UK Film Council was abolished: the British Film Institute will be picking up the reins of lottery-fund distribution to the film industry. What's remarkable is that, after over two decades of chopping and changing, we are back where we were in the late 1980s: the BFI is the only game in town.
It's especially extraordinary given the kind of rhetoric that accompanied the establishment of the UK Film Council in 2000. When John Woodward was appointed the UK Film Council's chief executive in 2000, an interview he gave to the Guardian was perceived to be a not-especially-coded attack on the kind of – largely experimental – film the BFI's production...

The new trend for Irish films to focus on family dynamics (which are often dysfunctional) rather than on political struggles is front and center in "The Runway", a brand new feel-good film inspired by a true story. Focusing on the daily lives of two Irish children in the 1980s, "The Runway" is remarkable for a number of reasons, not the least of which is its focus on kids instead of freedom fighters. Could it be that we’re finally stepping out from the shadow of history? The plot of "The Runway" is as simple and charming as the film it inspired. Based on real life events, the film opens in 1983 when a South American pilot crash lands his plane in a tiny Co. Cork field. Soon, against all the odds, the local’s villagers are building a runway to get him back into the air and safely home. That’s...

Gee, Now That's Really A Shame
This week's news seemed to have an extra helping of gay guys doing dumb and/or self-serving things that, frankly, got on my nerves.
Leading off the idiot parade, it looks like Perez Hilton may have finally gone too far by tweeting out a picture of an apparently pantyless Miley Cyrus exiting a car ala what Britney Spears did some time ago. This could potentially qualify as child porn and, if convicted, Perez (Aka Mario Lavandeira) could actually do some jail time.
Gee. How terrible.
I don't want to revel in the misfortune of someone else, but I'm a firm believer in you reap what you sow and when someone fouls the pop culture waters the way Perez has, well, let's just say I'm not surprised.
I always thought Perez would come to a bad end of some kind thanks to his endless gossipmongering and hateful posts,...
