Prior to 1999, Jamie Foxx (who is gratefully "feeling blessed" following his recent hospitalization) was best known as a comedian. He came into the public eye in 1991 when he joined the cast of Keenan Ivory Wayans' immensely popular sketch comedy series "In Living Color," and quickly made the leap to films. In Barry Levinson's surreal fantasia "Toys," Foxx appeared as a comic relief soldier. After films like "Booty Call" and "The Players Club," Foxx appeared in his first dramatic role, playing a hotshot football player in Oliver Stone's energetic sports opera "Any Given Sunday." After proving his versatility as a performer, Foxx began attracting the attention of many high-profile directors, and worked with Michael Mann on both "Ali" and the excellent L.A. crime thriller "Collateral."

Ice Cube might have started out in the world of music. But the rapper has also become quit the established actor over the years, appearing in more than two dozen movies. In fact, Ice Cube reportedly carries a net worth of $160 million. However, early on, the rapper never thought he had a chance at landing a role in his film debut, the Oscar-nominated drama Boyz n the Hood.
‘Boyz n the Hood’ was Ice Cube’s first major breakthrough movie
The 1995 film Friday arguably established Ice Cube as a big-screen leading man. After all, he carried top billing on that hit comedy, which also catapulted Chris Tucker to stardom. And since then, he’s appeared in countless hits, including two Friday sequels, the Barbershop franchise, 21 Jump Street and its sequel, Ride Along and its sequel, and most recently, 2020’s The High Note.
But 1991’s Boyz n the Hood was something special.

A new report from The Wall Street Journal reveals a heated battle between Ice Cube and Warner Bros. over “Last Friday,” the fourth film in the “Friday” comedy franchise that has been in development for nearly a decade. The two parties agreed to develop “Last Friday” in 2012, with Cube reportedly to be paid $11 million. Disagreements over the script and other issues have delayed the sequel over the years.
As reported by WSJ: “Ice Cube wants Warner Bros., owned by AT&T Inc., to surrender its rights to the ‘Friday’ property and to two other movies he made there — ‘All About the Benjamins’ and ‘The Players Club.’ Warner Bros. replied, calling the demand ‘extortionate’ and saying it won’t release rights to the valuable franchise or any other Ice Cube movies.”

“The Players Table” TV series starring Halsey and Sydney Sweeney has landed at HBO Max, with the project in the development stage at the WarnerMedia-owned streaming service, TheWrap has learned.
Based on Jessica Goodman’s novel “They Wish They Were Us,” the potential series, which would mark Halsey’s TV debut, is a co-production between HBO Max and Endeavor Content.
Here’s the logline for “The Players Table”: The truth may as well be arbitrary in a world where no one says what they mean. In the affluent town of Gold Coast, Long Island — a community sustained by lies, complicity, and absolute moral decay — two young women (Sweeney and Halsey) come of age as they unravel the mystery of a classmates’ murder. But in order to understand what happened to their friend, they must first confront what’s happened to them.
Annabelle Attanasio is set to direct, write and executive produce the project.

Tommy “Tiny” Lister, who appeared in “Friday” and “The Fifth Element” and was also a professional wrestler, died Thursday, his manager Cindy Cowan confirmed.
Cowan said he was found unresponsive in his apartment in Marina del Rey, Calif. after displaying symptoms of Covid-19 in recent days. He had been working on a film and had to cancel shooting after falling ill, Cowan said.
“He was a wonderful guy with a heart of gold. Everyone loved him. A real gentle giant,” she said, “We’re all devastated.”
Lister wrestled Hulk Hogan in the World Wrestling Federation after appearing as Zeus in 1989’s “No Holds Barred.” He later spent time in World Championship Wrestling, where he was billed as Z-Gangsta.

With programmers of all sorts seeking alternative programming, old movies become new. “Contagion,” Steven Soderberg’s 2011 pandemic thriller with Matt Damon and Marion Cotillard, remains the biggest catalog title and ranks #1 at FandangoNOW, #3 at Amazon Prime. There are only a handful of other overlaps between the charts, and the lists seem more fluid than the ones limited to current films. And Netflix, which hosts a more limited selection of such titles, has some of the oddest choices popping up on their list.

We take a look back at the work of the much loved star of The Green Mile, who died yesterday
Michael Clarke Duncan's move from bodyguard duties into acting was pretty seamless: lots of bit parts in TV shows and films like Back in Business, Bulworth and The Players Club came his way, all of the "bouncer", "body builder" and "security guard" variety. His big break came after he stopped real-life minding, and scored a role in Jerry Bruckheimer's epic space-disaster movie Armageddon. Though only one of the squad guys, he earned instant immortality with his "you the man" utterance in the final climactic sequence. (It's at 4:48.)
And anyone supposing he was the new Ving Rhames was put to rights in the scene where Duncan began frugging in leopardskin underpants - it's even more effective with the Spanish dubbing.
But it was his subsequent casting in The Green Mile,...

Films directed by musicians are a strange, unloved sub-genre. At best they are obscure oddities, like Daft Punk’s Electroma, but usually they tend to just be awful vanity projects – see Madonna’s recently slated W.E. or Ice Cube’s long-forgotten stripper-ploitation piece The Players Club. Rob Zombie is probably the only one who’s made a decent stab at it. So expectations for the behind the camera debut of Ben Drew, Aka British rapper Plan B, might not be the highest.
However, Plan B isn’t your run-of-the-mill shouty attention-seeking hoodie wearing UK urban star. His breakthrough record The Defamation Of Strickland Banks was a decidedly cinematic concept album, and he’s put in not-too-shabby acting roles in Harry Brown and Adulthood. He’s also spoken extensively in interviews about his celluloid dreams and filmic influences, and it’s almost enough to hope that this is going to be...

Acclaimed film director Sidney Lumet has died at age 86 from lymphoma. Lumet was nominated four times for Best Director Oscars but never won. However, he did receive an honorary Oscar for his life's work in 2005. Lumet, who started as a child actor, was - along with Woody Allen- the quintessential New York director and preferred working in Gotham whenever possible. He expressed an aversion to Hollywood early in his career. His career boasted a remarkable and diverse number of classic movies including 12 Angry Men, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Network, The Pawnbroker, Murder on the Orient Express, The Verdict, The Anderson Tapes, The Hill and Fail Safe. I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Lumet in his New York office and screening room some years ago when we worked on his audio commentary for the Fox DVD of The Verdict. In a move that looks set to redefine the word “incongruity,” Disney have announced they are set to finance a picture by actor, director, writer and hip-hop legend Ice Cube. Since taking charge of the studio Rich Ross and Sean Bailey have sought to broaden the scope of its output and alter perception of what it means to be known as “a Disney film,” and Cube’s Chrome and Paint about inner-city car culture has been earmarked as an ideal way to do just that.
The script is based on a song of the same name from Cube’s 2006 album Laugh Now, Cry Later, the theme and contents of which are deeply out of synch with Disney’s traditional image….

Disney is close to a deal to finance and distribute Chrome and Paint, which Ice Cube will direct and star in. The film is reportedly a gritty Boyz N' The Hood-style drama based on a script he co-wrote with Eva Vives. Cube will produce the drama about the "custom car culture of South Central Los Angeles" with his Cube Vision partner Matt Alvarez.
Cube's last directing gig was the 2010 Oakland Raiders documentary Straight Outta L.A. and before that directed 1998's The Players Club. Depp was a baby-faced 24 when he started the series: Tatum is 30 and Hill is 27. Shooting begins in late April and Neal Moritz is producing.

Protect ya neck! That is, from the karate chops of Russell Crowe, who will be starring in an unlikely collaboration with Wu-Tang Clan member RZA in the latter’s upcoming kung fu movie The Man With the Iron Fist, the rapper’s manager told EW. RZA is set to direct and apparently has been getting help from chop-sockey enthusiast Quentin Tarantino. And although it may seem that way, Crowe and RZA’s partnership doesn’t come from out of the blue: They co-starred in Ridley Scott’s American Gangster and will be sharing the screen again in the upcoming The Next Three Days.

Sometimes, it can be fun to take holiday traditions and shake them up a bit. The Players Club of Swarthmore Theater is doing just that, with a classic that most people experience every December as one of a myriad of old-time gems that roll across television screens. This year, Frank Capra's classic story about a small-town banker is hitting the stage in a pretty unusual way. It's a Wonderful Life: a Live Radio Play will open just after Thanksgiving and play through the beginning of December.
