If you're looking to pinpoint the greatest year in hip-hop, it's going to start with a one, followed by a nine, another nine, and end with a number no higher than five. The genre that grew out of Bronx house parties thrown by sonic pioneers like DJ Kool Herc, and survived the faddish exploitation of the early and mid-1980s had finally come of age. Obviously, there were groundbreaking LPs released prior to the '90s, but it wasn't until we entered the final decade of the millennium that explorers like Hank Shocklee, Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, and Prince Paul refined their sounds to bring hard-hitting East Coast beats and blunted West Coast G-funk grooves to the ears of audiophiles across the country.
Hollywood was listening. They weren't necessarily getting it, but they were listening. Mid-'80s films like "Breakin'," "Beat Street" and "Krush Groove" captured the excitement of the...

Just in time for the big holiday weekend that “closes the curtain” on the summer blockbusters of 2022, comes a comedy that’s more than a bit different from the usual warm weather farces. That’s because it’s part of the increasingly popular subgenre, the “mockumentary”, which parodies documentary features (that’s the “mock” part). It stretches back more than fifty years, to Woody Allen’s feature directing debut, Take The Money And Run, but most current film fans zero in on Rob Reiner’s This Is Spinal Tap, which inspired one of its stars, Christopher Guest, to create his beloved string of cult classics like Best In Show and A Mighty Wind. Chadwick Boseman dies aged 43Peter Bradshaw on Chadwick Boseman
It would be damning Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther with faint praise to call it the best of the Marvel movies. Rather, it is that studio’s only film to date that has felt like it had any reason to exist beyond selling toys and pencil cases and boosting the brand. This wasn’t just a superhero movie: this was a howl of pain which echoed far beyond the multiplexes. Central to its effectiveness was Chadwick Boseman, whose measured, inquisitive performance as T’Challa, the king who doubles as the Black Panther, helped lend the picture its warmth and humanity. The character could be flawed, bewildered, blinkered—he had to learn to balance the good of his country,...

Jonah Hill teamed up with GQ magazine this week to offer up a handful of movie suggestions to help cinephiles around the world survive these isolating times of self-distancing. Hill’s list is an impressive mix of serious auteur dramas and absurd escapist comedies; surely there’s at least a couple titles here that will help liven up everyones self-distancing. First up is “Shampoo,” Hal Ashby’s 1975 comedy about a hairdresser (Warren Beatty) come undone by his various clients and lovers. “It’s hysterical and it’s really satirical,” Hill says of the film, while noting it marked the era of comedies that no longer get made.
“It is a comedy, but in the ’70s comedies were not genre-fied in the same way,” Hill says. “There were these great films that looked beautiful, made by great directors, where your A-level great filmmakers that made crazy dramas made “comedies” and they...

Exclusive: Tamra Davis will be in charge of the switches for the new feature comedy Turned On at Fox, having been hired to helm the FeigCo project. Turned On fits into Paul Feig’s philosophy of employing not only females behind the lens but more diverse voices overall as part of the #inclusionrider concept. In other words, FeigCo is actually walking the walk.
Turned On, written by Charlie Kesslering, tells the story of a brilliant but awkward engineer who creates an android clone to fill in with difficult situations, but when the robot self-actualizes, her life soon spirals out of control.
Davis is an old pro who began in the 1980s with music videos before launching into documentaries, TV and features. Her previous credits include Billy Madison and Half Baked as well as the cult favorite CB4. Her previous TV credits include You’re the Worst, Alone Together, Santa Clarita Diet,...

CB4
Directed by Tamra Davis
Written by Nelson George, Robert LoCash and Chris Rock
1993, USA
Back in 1993, two low-budget mockumentary-style comedies based on Gangsta Rap were released. The better of the two is Rusty Cundieff’s Canadian indie gem Fear of a Black Hat, chronicling the rise and fall of Nwh, a not particularly talented but always controversial hip-hop group. The second was CB4, about the rise to fame of Mc Gusto, Stab Master Arson, and Dead Mike, members of the rap group Cell Block 4. The similarities between the two are uncanny, so much so that one would think someone got their greedy hands on the other script and decided to shamefully steal the idea.
Written by music critic Nelson George and Saturday Night Live’s Chris Rock (who also plays the lead role of Albert, a k a Mc Gusto), this spoof on gangsta rap targets controversial rap groups (specifically N.W.A.) and deliberately provocative,...

Prior to Chris Rock’s new film Top Five, my favorite of his scattered (sometimes sadly corny and embarrassing) big screen efforts has been the writer-director’s illuminating documentary Good Hair where he played himself: genial, witty, and inquisitive. Most of his movies underestimate Rock’s range of influences: his stage persona the dominant perception in everyone’s mind. But unless you’re Rodney Dangerfield, seldom does a stage act translate well in features. The wacky inspirations of Louis Ck and Rock’s Pootie Tang were tamed by studio fools; CB4 is just a series of bits. When he does settle his rhythms for a good indie role (2 Days in New York, Nurse Betty), Rock is affable but lacks the confidence shown in concert or a club. Finally perfecting the formula, Top Five is Rock’s triple-hat artist’s statement on fame, culture, relationships, New York City, stand-up, hip hop,...

This might be the thing that makes some of us interested in police shows again. And makes us forget the past two-plus decades in which Eddie Murphy became so depressingly unfunny. According to Vulture, Murphy has teamed up with The Shield creator Shawn Ryan to develop Beverly Hills Cop as a TV series, and they began pitching ideas to the networks yesterday. Murphy actually first talked about the project back in October, when he told Rolling Stone that he’d even like to appear on the show from time to time.
“I’d do the pilot, show up here and there,” he said, explaining that the show would revolve around “Axel Foley’s son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit.”
If you are too young to understand why this is exciting, watch the awesome trailer from the first 1984 movie above. And also don’t ever watch Beverly Hills Cop III.

It's taken an animated trilogy about a gang of zoo animals to bring Ben Stiller and Chris Rock together.
Two of the most influential comedians over the last two decades, they have seemingly always orbited in the same world - both New York performers about the same age - but have hardly ever collaborated.
"We cross paths," Rock says of their roles in Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. "We're cowboys. We see each other at the saloon."
Speaking from Cannes, where the two New Yorkers are promoting the latest installment in the popular DreamWorks Animation franchise, Stiller says: "We've each been doing our own things, but after a while, you have that sort of shared history, which you really value."
On leaving school, Rock pursued stand-up, while Stiller started in sketches and directing.

Trailblazing the way for more rap documentaries just as A Tribe Called Quest did for its genre’s musical potential, Beats Rhymes & Life is a passion project by first-time director Michael Rapaport that goes deep into how important the quartet was during the ’90s. As heard in both underground and mainstream rap acts today, the influence of the group (who included members Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White) is still prominent.
I sat down with first-time director Rapaport and Atcq member Phife Dawg to discuss the group’s influence on modern culture, the small existence of rap documentaries, the excitement of rap music in the ’80s, and more.
Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest opens in Chicago on July 15.
There’s a lot of talk in this documentary about respect and influence. Is that an important component to musical history? Are financial numbers equal,...

Netflix has revolutionized the home movie experience for fans of film with its instant streaming technology. Netflix Nuggets is my way of spreading the word about independent, classic and foreign films being made available by Netflix for instant streaming. Important Note: There may be some films that do not become available on the specified dates. This is merely a report of the most accurate release dates I can find, but is not directly confirmed by Netflix themselves.

Sharp-tongued comedian Chris Rock will make his Broadway debut in a new play about love and fidelity with, you guessed it, an X-rated title. For the actor-comedian, who has a penchant for peppering his material with salty language, the match makes perfect sense.
Rock will join Bobby Cannavale, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Annabella Sciorra and Yul Vazquez in a production of Stephen Adly Guirgis' play The Mother ... With the Hat. (As promised, the title includes an expletive.)
The play follows Jackie (Cannavale), a parolee who is newly sober, and his girlfriend (Rodriguez) who is still battling drug and alcohol addiction. Rock will play Jackie's Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor.
Anna D. Shapiro, who won a Tony for directing August: Osage County, will helm the project.
This is the latest medium that the former SNL cast member is tackling since he's already conquered the stand-up circuit, television (including "Everybody Hates Chris") and of course,...

Tamra Davis Last week, I saw two of the best films I have seen all summer. One was Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, a film I beg you all to see before it gets shunted out of theaters in the next two or three weeks. The other film was Tamra Davis's new doc Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child.
Radiant Child is one of those films that often flies under the radar during this crowded summer season that deserves more attention than it is currently getting. It debuted earlier this year at Sundance along with the much more hyped Banksy film Exit Through The Gift Shop, and the comparisons are obvious. Jean-Michel Basquiat is the blueprint for an artist like Banksy and a cautionary tale as well.
But the similarities stop there. Both films are great. Probably the two best docs you'll see this year. But Banksy...

Jean-Michel Basquiat gave the world thousands of pieces of art but very few interviews. His friend, filmmaker Tamra Davis (director of the cult films "CB4" and "Half Baked), recorded one of the rare ones in a room at the L'Ermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills in June 1986. Basquiat died two years later of a heroin overdose and Davis, worried she might be taking advantage of her friend's legacy for personal gain, left the footage in a drawer for over 20 years. She was finally convinced to share it with the world, first in a 20-minute short film and now as part of the new feature documentary, "Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child."
Davis' candid interview with Basquiat is only a small (albeit crucial) element of her 93-minute film. The rest is a mixture of archival footage of late '70s, early '80s New York and reflections from Basquiat's friends, collaborators, contemporaries, clients,...

Khandi Alexander is a chameleon. She invests each role with such presence, such verve and realism, that we easily believe her as anything from a downtrodden drug addict to an overly maternal coroner. That need to inhabit such a full range of personas is, says the actor, one of the guiding forces of her career. "I don't like to be pigeonholed; I don't like when people won't see me for something because they don't think I can do it," she says. "I always feel like, at least give me the shot."She is so up for anything that she'll even throw herself into grueling real-life research. As prep for her current gig as no-nonsense barkeep Ladonna Batiste-Williams on HBO's "Treme," Alexander worked in a New Orleans watering hole during Mardi Gras. "[The producers] took me to a funky, lowdown, gutbucket bar and said, 'You work here, and you're gonna work here for...

I'm really looking forward to checking out "Death at a Funeral" this weekend. Someone from Screen Gems e-mailed me towards the end of the year with a list of upcoming movies on the studio's slate. "Funeral" was among them. I immediately scanned past it to focus on more action-driven fare, like "Legion" and "Takers." A leopard can't change its spots and all that.
I later returned to "Funeral," a Neil Labute-directed remake of the 2007 UK film (directed by Frank Oz!), and watched the trailer. That was it. Massive ensemble cast that includes Tracy Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Martin Lawrence, Luke Wilson and Peter Dinklage. A trailer overflowing with funny moments. Chris Rock produced. I'm sold.
Rock has come quite a long way since his early bit roles in "Beverly Hills Cop II" and "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka." He's evolved as both a performer and a writer. Or has he?...

Queens native Ty Fyffe has them all from The G-Unit to Michael Jackson.
"It was a life-changing experience," he said about visiting Michael Jackson at the King of Pop's home. At the time in the early '90s, Fife was under the tutelage of Teddy Riley and living in Virginia.
"Ted was working with Mike heavy after the success of Dangerous," Fyffe added. "He took me and one of his boys down to Neverland. Mike was working on the 'Addams Family Values' soundtrack. It was crazy that I went to the joint. We was in his movie theater."
After Riley, Fyffe went on to learn from Erick Sermon.

From decrying a severe lack of female filmmakers to satirically mocking the concept of judging actresses by how much return on investment they offer, it seems like we've been balls-deep in feminism lately. We realize that you, dear reader, believe that only men are allowed to direct movies, but that's just not true! Women have a long and storied history with the art of filmmaking, and even though it will probably upset your precious little chauvinist default settings, we're here to tell you that some of your favorite explosions, quotable comedies and fight scenes are directed by the fairer sex. In fact, some of your very favorite films had women at the helm. Leave your Neanderthal preconceived notions about woman filmmakers at the door, and prepare for your mind to be blown. 10. Real Genius (1985) The Director: Martha Coolidge The Pitch: In addition to creating Introducing Dorthy Dandridge and Valley Girl, Martha Coolidge...

Nelson George has spent his career not sitting still. He began by writing music journalism for Billboard and The Village Voice just as hip-hop was taking off. He published two defining books (the Motown history Where Did Our Love Go? and The Death Of Rhythm & Blues) before reaching his mid-30s. He branched into novels, film (he co-wrote CB4 with Chris Rock), and television (he stars in VH1’s Soul Cities). And he’s chronicled black America’s relationship with the movies (Blackface), basketball (Elevating The Game), and the ’70s and ’80s (Buppies, B-Boys, Baps, And Bohos). George has threaded portions ...

Chris Rock is hoping to win the role off an eccentric pop star in the $39 million musical comedy Big In Japan. Chris wants to play the leader of a one-hit wonder hip-hop group who are re-discovered in the Far East. Next Friday director Steve Carr is taking control of the movie. A worker on the project says of Rock, "He has been waiting for an opportunity to do something musical. Rather strangely, they also love him in Japan where the movie is set. Rap music is huge out there at the moment." This would not be Rock's first rap-based comedy. In 1993, he co-wrote and starred in CB4, a mock documentary about a rap group.
