The Season 11 finale took place on “The Masked Singer” Wednesday, May 22. After singing their hearts out for panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Rita Ora, Goldfish and Gumball stood by side as host Nick Cannon announced Goldfish was the winner. Before Goldfish revealed herself, the Gumball had to take it off and turned out to be award-winning actor Scott Porter.
When Nick asked Scott, “Who knew you could do what you do?” the actor replied, “Not even me until maybe tonight. I don’t have any legitimate training. I started singing on street corners in Orlando, Florida when I was going to high school. I auditioned for two straight years for Disney and couldn’t book a role. I didn’t know I could do this until tonight, but I’m so glad I did.”

Before video games truly advanced, the arcade was where it was at. Much like Saturday morning cartoons, it’s one of those obsolete ideas from the past where you get why it’s gone, but damn if it didn’t represent some wonderful times. Arcade games seemed like the zenith of what a video game could look and feel like. Consoles were great and all, but you knew that if you were getting a port of an arcade classic for your 8-bit or 16-bit system, you weren’t getting the full package.
One of the genres that truly felt like the soul of the arcade experience was the beat ‘em up. The idea that you, a couple of friends, or even some complete strangers could join together at a cabinet and go on a trek to beat up as many enemy thugs as possible until you either ran out of quarters and couldn’t continue,...

Renegade Nell was a “chance to reimagine what a Disney hero is.” So says director Ben Taylor, who directs and executive produces the Disney+ original series created by Sally Wainwright. Taylor, known for Sex Education and Catastrophe, says Louisa Harland‘s ass-kicking Nell Jackson “makes absolute sense as the third part of that triangle” made up of powerful female characters created by Wainwright, such as Happy Valley‘s Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) and Gentleman Jack‘s Anne Lister (Suranne Jones). In the eight-episode Renegade Nell, Nell Jackson, a quick-witted and courageous young woman, finds herself framed for murder and unexpectedly becomes the most notorious outlaw in 18th-century England. But when a magical spirit called Billy Blind (Ted Lasso‘s Nick Mohammed) appears, Nell realizes her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined. The cool, and occasionally inconvenient, thing about Nell’s powers is that they activate when she’s in danger.

Set during the Jacobite insurrection in the early 1700s, Renegade Nell revolves around Nelly Jackson, who is presumed dead but returns with superpowers granted by a fairy named Billy Blind. Despite being a fantasy adventure, Renegade Nell is based on real incidents from the time. For example, the Jacobites were indeed supporters of James Francis Edward during this harrowing period of ideological war. While James was the Protestant Queen Anne’s own sibling, he was raised Catholic. While the Jacobites wanted their own ideas regarding the monarchy, the Queen had other plans; she supported moderate Tory politicians and was a supporter of the people. It makes sense that the Jacobites wanted full monarch control of the Kingdom, as it had only been a few decades since the British Civil War, which took away power from the monarch. It is said that Anne, Queen of Britain, was quite supportive of this...

“I’m beginning to wonder if you’re not destined for very great things, Nelly Jackson. I’m beginning to wonder if you’ve been sent to the planet for something special.” So Nell (Louisa Harland) is told midway through Disney+’s Renegade Nell, but by that point the prediction feels like a wild understatement. After all, it’s coming from Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed), the mysterious sprite who occasionally grants her otherworldly gifts of strength, speed and invulnerability. Surely the narrative gods never intended her to apply such strange talents to a humdrum life.
What that specific “something special” might be, however, proves more difficult to pin down. Nell accomplishes plenty over the adventure’s first season, such that this common nobody even gets tangled up in the struggle between Queen Anne (Jodhi May) and the Jacobite traitors who would overthrow her. But Renegade Nell never does deliver on...

"Whatever you two geniuses scheming up, count me in!" Quiver Distr. has revealed an official trailer for a kooky, zany western thriller comedy titled Outlaw Posse, arriving in theaters in March. It's the latest film directed by and written by and starring actor / filmmaker Mario Van Peebles, son of the legendary Melvin Van Peebles. This kind of feels like Van Peebles trying to create a modern update on Blazing Saddles, but it doesn't have the same comedic genius as that film. In the untamed Wild West of 1908, men in power take advantage of an unfair world. Renegade cowboy Chief, eager to restore balance, assembles a daring group of outcasts and saddles up on a cross-country odyssey to reclaim stolen gold in unsettled territory. The big ensemble features William Mapother, John Carroll Lynch, D.C Young Fly, Mandela Van Peebles, Amber Reign Smith, Neal McDonough, Allen Payne, Cam Gigandet, and M. Emmet Walsh,...

As the odd little horror comedy Courtney Gets Possessed opens, we meet Courtney (Lauren Buglioli) sitting alone and bored at someone else’s wedding when a jaunty fellow named Dave (Jonathon Pawloski) approaches her and arouses some interest in the lass. Fast-forward five years, and Courtney is now the bride about to marry Glen (Zae Jordan) while coping with her lifelong nemesis of a sister, Caitlin (Madison Hatfield). The latter has always resented her more popular sibling and done all she could to mess with her, from swiping jewelry to boinking her boyfriends. At the bachelorette party, Dave turns up at her door. Courtney tries to keep him out, but Caitlin – if only to annoy her sister – invites him in. The group soon learns that Dave is actually Satan, that Courtney naively had a fling with him several years earlier, and now he wants her back,...

The episode of Revisited covering the 2004 version of Hellboy was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Comic book adaptations are everywhere these days, but in the early 2000s, they were a bit more of a rarity. There were some, but not a ton. 2004 saw a group of comic book adaptations come out including Immortal and Renegade and movies like Constantine, Aeon Flux, and Sin City were announced for 2005. One movie that came out in 2004 and made an impression, positioning the director, Guillermo del Toro, for much bigger things was Hellboy (watch it Here). This was his follow-up to the fantastic Blade II and, thus, not his first foray into comic book movies.
Now, let’s get this clear from the start, Mr. Del Toro is a monster cinema God to me,...

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist. This article also contains major spoilers for "The Equalizer 3."The original 1985 TV series "The Equalizer," starring Edward Woodward, was part of a notable trend in television from the '70s and '80s. Multiple shows at the time were about dangerous, mysterious, lawless drifters who traveled from town to town seeking out justice and applying violence where it might be needed. The trend included shows like "Kung Fu," "Then Came Bronson," "The A-Team," "The Incredible Hulk," and a little later, "Renegade." Robert McCall was an ex-military man who had a talent for finding people in distress and helping them — violently — as the situation required.
In 2014, filmmaker Antoine Fuqua adapted "The Equalizer" to the big screen, casting Denzel Washington in the role of Robert McCall.

Just because the week is shorter, doesn’t mean that there’s any less stellar programming on the horizon, with new seasons of “I Think You Should Leave,” “Dark Side of the Ring,” “Nancy Drew” and “Painting with John,” plus the series finales of “Barry” and “Succession.” And that’s to say nothing of a ripped-from-the-headlines HBO movie (starring Sydney Sweeney no less), a documentary about the American Gladiators and a LeBron James biopic. A jam-packed week, even with one fewer day!

People love to talk about a new Golden Age of Television, where buzzwords like Peak TV get thrown around to describe any number of respected, popular, or critically acclaimed television shows. Certainly, there’s something to be said for the quality of a show like Mad Men or The Sopranos. Even more recent shows from the shared Vince Gilligan universe have their champions, with devoted fans extolling the virtues of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul long after the final episodes air.
It’s good stuff, to be sure, but it’s not really peak television. Everyone knows television peaked in the early to mid 1990s when a wave of first-run syndicated action adventure comedies propped up the mid-afternoon schedules of every local broadcast channel and basic cable outlet. Thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Netflix’s new series Fubar, it all might be coming back.

Whether it's glazed lips or sheer tops or the latest viral TikTok dance, odds are that your favorite trends have beginnings that reach further back into history than you might expect. But if you're not sure exactly where these cultural touch points come from, we don't blame you; they're usually popularized by white influencers or celebrities who might not know their true origins either.
In a place that's as vast as the internet, proper credit can be lost or distorted as trends go viral, get recycled, and go viral again. Take Jalaiah Harmon for example. The teenage dancer invented the uberpopular Renegade dance to "Lottery" by K Camp, but she didn't receive the immediate credit for her contributions - one of many instances that led Black content creators to propose a strike against the app in 2021.
And there are more far-reaching examples. If you're into maximalist nail designs, you might...

Terrence O’Hara, a television director who most notably worked on series such as “NCIS” and “NCIS: Los Angeles,” died of cancer on Dec. 5. He was 76.
Throughout his career, he directed episodes of shows like “The Blacklist,” “Smallville,” “Nikita,” “Sons of Anarchy,” “The Shield,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “The X-Files” and more. It was particularly with “NCIS” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” where O’Hara found his second homes in directing, working on both shows for nearly two decades and establishing long-lasting relationships with the cast, crew and their families.
O’Hara was born in Newark, N.J., on Christmas Day, 1945, and was raised by parents Joseph and Marie. In high school, O’Hara caught the acting bug watching his sister Judy perform on stage during a school production, soon following her footsteps as the lead in Essex’s high school production of “The Boy Friend.” He attended Rutgers University for two...

From Zeph in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Frank Castle in The Punisher to David Drayton in The Mist (based on the Stephen King novella of the same name) and Baxley in The Predator, Thomas Jane is no stranger to bringing compelling characters to life on screen in multiple genres. His role in the recent horror comedy Slayers is certainly no exception, as he plays Elliot Jones, a modern vampire hunter who lives in an Rv, researches bloodsucker conspiracy theories, and eventually teams up with video game influencer Flynn (Kara Hayward) to help take down a nefarious vampire empire.
With Slayers now on Digital and On Demand, we recently caught up with Thomas Jane to discuss acting in and executive producing the new vampire movie, and he also reflected on filming his memorable fight scene with Kevin Nash in The Punisher and being a part of the gut-punch ending of The Mist.

The celebrity survival series Beyond The Edge has not survived the chopping block, as CBS has canceled the show after one season. Produced by Buster Productions in association with eOne’s Renegade, the series followed nine celebrities living in the dangerous jungles of Panama for two weeks. Unlike Survivor, the show it aired after, Beyond The Edge did not have any eliminations; instead, the show tested whether the celebrities had the inner fortitude, courage, and physical ability to withstand the elements, including torrential downpours, scorching heat, and deadly wildlife. A player could only leave if they rang a bell to signal that they were ready to go home. For each day they lasted and every challenge won, the celebrities raised more money for their charities. After the 14 days, the top two earners battled it out head-to-head in one final adventure. The first season starred country singers Lauren Alaina and Craig Morgan,...

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which emanates from Aew Universal once again. We’ve got Taz and Excalibur on commentary as usual, so let’s get to the action!
Match #1: John Silver def. Serpentico
My Thoughts: This was a really solid start to this week’s show. Serpentico was his usual reliable self (even if we did get a screaming Luther in his corner) and so was Silver. A great match even if this felt like something of a showcase for Silver on the road to the Trios Championship final.
My Score: 3 out of 5 Match #2: Diamante def. Charlette Renegade
My Thoughts: Diamante’s back! It’s been some weeks since we’ve seen her in action, just a shame she had to come back to Renegade Sisters shenanigans, which totally took away from this match this week rather than adding to it.
My Score: 1.5 out of 5 Match #3: Angelo Parker def.

Genndy Tartakovsky gets more ambitious in Season 2 of his Emmy-winning, prehistoric animation series, “Primal,” proving why he’s such a revered animation auteur. (The first two episodes stream July 21 on Adult Swim and July 22 on HBO Max). The buddy story between Neanderthal Spear (Aaron Laplante) and his T-Rex companion, Fang, gets more complex, while the world building grows more epic in scope, as they encounter civilized European cultures during the Bronze Age.
Picking up where Tartakovsky left off in the Season 1 cliffhanger, Spear and Fang set out to look for Mira (Laetitia Eido-Mollon), the enslaved Homo sapien who was abducted. In the first two episodes (“Sea of Despair” and “Shadow of Fate”), they survive an attack at sea and make their way to an island, where they go on separate journeys that test their loyalty.

It’s not I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here — but it sure is close. CBS on Wednesday debuted Beyond the Edge, a new reality show from Renegade (Naked and Afraid) that drops nine celebrities into the jungles of Panama to compete in challenges while earning cash for their charities (and personal pocketbooks).
Even before its debut, CBS executives privately marveled at how the show was “really killing” its participants — a rather sobering nod to the nasty elements faced by former NBC champ Metta World Peace, former NFL linebacker Ray Lewis, American Idol alum Lauren Alaina, actress Jodie Sweetin (Full House), supermodel Paulina Porizkova, former NFL player and coach Mike Singletary, country artist Craig Morgan, former Bachelor Colton Underwood and The Real Housewives of New York City’s Eboni K. Williams.

In early 2020, teenage dancer and choreographer Jalaiah Harmon transformed the way we use TikTok. Her now-viral "Renegade" dance blew up across the platform and helped turn the app into a collaborative space for creators looking to share their moves with the world. As other TikTok users capitalized on the success of the dance and attempted to erase Harmon's name from its history, a new conversation broke out across social media about the importance of giving Black content creators the credit they're due.
A leading voice in the subsequent TikTok strike, Harmon has since rightfully taken back the credit she is owed and helped other influencers to do the same. In a conversation with Popsugar, she opened up about the lasting effects of having her work appropriated and all the opportunities that have come her way after making her voice heard.

They say it takes a village to raise a child, so, for their second album, the collaborative Big Red Machine (nominally National guitarist Aaron Dessner and Justin “Bon Iver” Vernon) decided to invite a birthday party’s worth of friends to pitch in for How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?, a slow, mopey album all about childhood and its adult results: depression, anxiety, all that fun stuff.
Though the album is grounded in Dessner’s piano melodies, which blur the line between melancholia and nostalgia, and Vernon’s instantly recognizable keen,...

Now, about a decade into his career, Atlanta’s K Camp has modern Southern anthems to his name like “Cut Her Off,” featuring 2 Chainz, and “Do It,” with Mykko Montana; a flurry of romantic cuts like “What’s on Your Mind” and “Comfortable”; and a viral hit in “Lottery (Renegade).”
The Marietta-raised rapper spits like a big flexer with a soft spirit, and his most recent release, Float, activates both approaches. You can hear it in the difference between singles “Guts” and “Game Ain’t Free,” the first finding...

With the Grammys eligibility period nearing its August 31 deadline, let’s take a fresh look at the contenders for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, which could be even more competitive than Best Pop Solo Performance given all the collaborations that are eligible to make the cut.
This category has numerous contenders who could easily get in. The locks — if you can call anything a lock at the Grammys — seem to be three. First, “Levitating” by Dua Lipa and DaBaby, which is the biggest hit eligible and is a remix of a song off of Lipa’s already-Grammy-winning album “Future Nostalgia“; its only problem might be DaBaby’s recent controversy concerning his homophobic remarks and stigmatizing of HIV/AIDS, which has already cost him a number of gigs but so far hasn’t knocked the remix off the charts.

Never in my zillennial life did I think that I would create an account for TikTok, but once I did, I was hooked to it thanks to the talented Black creators on the app. One thing that I loved about Black TikTok was the dances made by talented creators like Keara Wilson, who choreographed a dance to Megan Thee Stallion's "Savage." Months later, the Nae Nae Twins came up with a perfectly synchronized dance to the "Savage" remix featuring Beyoncé, which encouraged thousands of people to join in on the fun.
As infectious as these dances are, TikTok has come under fire for algorithmically favoring white creators and content. Black culture and creativity is a significant contributor to TikTok's success in most niches, especially in the realm of choreography. Countless dances like the Smeeze, the Renegade, and more were created and popularized by Black people. Yet it's still a...
