New technologies led by artificial intelligence and virtual production are profoundly changing visual effects but are still “another paintbrush” in the service of storytelling, says VFX veteran George Murphy.
“Virtual production is not just a tool for VFX; it’s a storytelling tool that allows actors to feel fully immersed in the scene, instead of having to imagine everything against a blank screen,” Murphy tells The Hollywood Reporter, in an interview at the Tokyo International Film Festival ahead of appearing on the Motion Picture Association panel, Filmmaking 2.0: The Evolution of Real-Time VFX for Traditional Filmmakers.
Murphy, a VFX supervisor and creative director at Dneg 360 in London, made his entry into filmmaking with Steven Spielberg’s Hook (1991), a production hailed for its seminal VFX, in particular the use of projected matte painting. General Hospital (Gh) spoilers spill some fans already have a sneaking suspicion about Dr. Isaiah Gannon (Sawandi Wilson).
While he seems charming at face value, we don’t know a whole lot about him. He shared a story with Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson) about why he quit working as a transplant surgeon — and it seemed to fall a bit flat with fans.
Don’t all doctors lose their patients sometimes? Why would this one patient have led to him giving up his career — and his life — to go practice a lower level of care in Africa?
General Hospital Spoilers — Does Isaiah Gannon Work For Jenz Sidwell?
With rumors swirling that Isaiah may have done something to sabotage Lulu Falconeri’s (Alexa Havins) ventilator when it failed without issuing any alarm, Lucky and others may soon begin to wonder whether it’ll be Isaiah who claims Sam McCall’s (Kelly Monaco) life too?...

Alex Jones‘ media company is being liquidated, and both his fans and his enemies are racing to get their hands on his empire.
Jones filed bankruptcy on his Infowars show and its parent company, Free Speech Systems, after being court-ordered to pay Sandy Hook families who sued him for defamation after he claimed the victims of the 2012 school shooting were paid actors. The conservative media personality owes the families around $1.5 billion in damages, though it is unlikely he will be able to pay them in full.
Jone’s entire brand is on sale – the Infowars name, production rights, archives, social media accounts, equipment, e-commerce site, customer lists and hundreds of domain names are being auctioned off, according to auction firms Tranzon Asset Advisors and ThreeSixty Asset Advisors. The assets can be bought individually or as a package.

Bob Yerkes, the acrobatic stunt performer who slid down a clock tower cable for Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future and hung around the Statue of Liberty under repair for Fred Ward in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, has died. He was 92.
Yerkes died Tuesday of natural causes in Northridge, Darlene Ava Williams, a stunt performer and one of his many mentees, announced.
The amiable Yerkes, who started out in the circus and was a skilled trapeze aerialist and tightrope walker, also plummeted from a helicopter through a roof in Breakout (1975), starring Charles Bronson.
“I was getting ready for the stunt and the guy said, ‘Break a Leg!,” and I broke them both,” he recalled in a 2017 interview. He said he also broke legs while working on Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and Her Alibi (1989), but, in a career that spanned eight decades, that was the extent of his serious injuries.

Regrettably, no amount of Hogwarts’ finest will bring back the Dame of dignity, Maggie Smith, who, at 89, has left us spellbound for eternity. Her passing marks a poignant moment in the annals of film (& theater), where her performances—especially as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series—resonated with wisdom and strength.

Dame Maggie Smith was many things. Hilarious and tragic. Elegant and aloof. Enchanting and deadly serious. Most will attribute their appreciation of her multiple-generation spanning career to roles in the “Harry Potter” or “Sister Act” franchises or perhaps “Downton Abbey,” which elevated her fame to a level she often spoke disdainfully of. For Smith was not an actress who was in it for the red carpets or accolades — though she received many, including two Oscars, five Baftas, four Emmys, and a Tony — but rather treated acting as a sturdy profession, one that required of her the utmost presence while on set or stage.
Beginning her career in the early 1950s, she played Viola in William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” at The Oxford Playhouse, followed later by roles in “As You Like It” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor” at London’s famed Old Vic theater. She rose to prominence on...

Details as to the quartet’s roles are under wraps. Tom Blyth and Emily Bader topline the pic from director Brett Haley (I’ll See You in My Dreams), which marks Henry’s first book adaptation to go into production.
The film follows free-spirited Poppy and routine-loving Alex, who have been unlikely best friends for a decade, living in different cities but spending every summer vacation together. The careful balance of their friendship is put to the test when they begin to question what has been obvious to everyone else — could they actually be the perfect romantic match?

For a good while, it seemed as though everything Steven Spielberg touched turned to gold. Having established the very concept of the blockbuster with "Jaws" in 1975, the director went on to make hit after hit with "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977), "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981), and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" (1982). Even 1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was a box office success, despite shocking some viewers who weren't used to such a dark and oddly violent effort from the director. Critical response to the movie was also more mixed than it had been for its predecessor. Of course, anyone following Spielberg's career closely would have known that "Temple of Doom" was not the first time the seemingly infallible director had fallen afoul of the critics.
Sandwiched between "Close Encounters" and "Raiders" in Spielberg's filmography is "1941." Made in 1979, this war comedy featured an ensemble cast that included Dan Aykroyd,...

The tragedy of being the most successful person on a job is that all eyes are trained on the star. For celebrities and filmmakers, that attention and scrutiny increases tenfold due to the nature of their profession. When it comes to Hollywood in the 1990s, Julia Roberts happened to be the most in-demand A-lister after the actress’s interminable acclaim after Pretty Woman.

Soon after, Roberts’ magical reputation spread like wildfire across Hollywood with filmmakers wanting to work with her in every upcoming project. Fortunately for her, the release of Pretty Woman in 1990 was immediately followed by a role opening up in Steven Spielberg’s Disney fantasy adventure film, Hook. What happened soon after would go on to be the stuff of legends.

At the peak of her career, Julia Roberts was known not only for her charismatic acting but also for her complicated relationships with industry figures. One of the most notable controversies occurred during the filming of Steven Spielberg’s 1991 film Hook, where tensions escalated between Roberts and the acclaimed director.

The conflict, however, was not the only such incident, as the actress also had a contentious relationship with Edward Zwick, the producer of Shakespeare in Love. Zwick has since reflected on their fallout, admitting that their professional disagreements led to a lasting estrangement.

Julia Roberts and Steven Spielberg only worked together once — on the 1991 film "Hook" — and it was not a pleasant experience for either of them. "Hook," to remind the reader, is a sequel to J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan" story, imagining what might happen if Pan left Neverland, grew up, and started a family. By Spielberg's vision, Pan would change his name to Peter Banning (Robin Williams), become a boring lawyer, and forget all about his eternal youth as a flying pixie kid.
Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) hasn't forgotten, however, and sends his pirates to Earth to kidnap Banning's children to lure him back to Neverland. The adult Peter is abducted by Tinkerbell (Roberts) and dragged back to his Edenic youth by force. Peter hates Neverland at first — the Lost Boys are too rowdy — but he slowly starts remembering his time as Peter Pan, and eventually begins to revert.

There was a time when Matt Damon was so renowned, his very name would give away the ending of a movie.

Oldman had on so much makeup in 2001’s Hannibal that he requested to “do it anonymously” for the theatrical release. But one Nathan Murray was credited as “Mr. Oldman's assistant,” which kind of gave away the game.

Christopher Nolan thought having Damon’s name attached to 2014’s Interstellar would give away much of the story, because people would have a built-in expectation of him being a “good guy.”

Hackman had a big part in 1993’s The Firm, but Tom Cruise was given humongous billing that made his name the same size as the movie title in some instances. Upon learning that, Hackman was basically like: Screw it, don’t even credit me.

Hollywood is known for its fair share of friendships and iconic relationships. However, at the same time, it has some outlined rivalries as well, that have led to a range of unique situations over the years. That also once seemed to be the case with Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow, two ladies who have made an impact on the industry in their own ways.

However, according to a 1998 interview with Lopez herself, the singer/actress thought that Paltrow’s claim to fame was not her own talent, but rather the celebrities that she hung out with. While most of us grew up watching Disney’s interpretation of classic children’s folktales, since the original stories have hit the public domain, it’s now fair game for anyone to use these characters. This eventually contributed to the creation of the critically panned Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, but thanks to the internet discourse surrounding it, the movie became a financial hit.

Actress Jenna Ortega is reportedly not a Star Wars fan. The Wednesday star recently appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s talk show where she was asked to rank classic movie scores. While she approved Danny Elfman’s scores, John Williams’ iconic Star Wars theme seemed to be on the bottom half of the list.
Ortega worked with Tim Burton, who frequently collaborates with Elfman, on the Netflix show Wednesday and the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The actress also mentioned that she had more nostalgic value for John Williams’ Jurassic Park than for his Star Wars work.

Halfway into her latest Netflix special, titled We Ride at Dawn, comedian Hannah Berner throws a question to a couple in her audience: a bald man and a young woman. She wants to know how the two met. The woman screams that the bald man happens to be her father. Berner, and the entire audience, erupts in laughter. Now, I know these comedy specials are carefully scripted and well thought-out. So this whole thing might not have been organic. But even then, this is the funniest joke of the whole set, and Berner deserves credit for that, as she herself has written and directed the set. If this was an impromptu thing, then she deserves ten times more credit, not to mention.
