Campy horror comedy...
paul_haakonsen28 June 2022
I stumbled upon the 1990 Hong Kong horror comedy "Shi Jia Zhong Di" (aka "Mortuary Blues") here in 2022. Needless to say that of course I had to sit down and watch it, given my fascination with the Hong Kong cinema. And the fact that I never even heard about this movie from writer and director Jeffrey Lau wasn't a hindrance.

The storyline in "Shi Jia Zhong Di" is pretty straight forward, if not actually somewhat generic for a horror comedy from the early 1990s Hong Kong cinema. But hey, if you enjoy that particular era of cinema, then you are in for a treat here. I will say that the storyline was actually enjoyable enough for what it was, though it was somewhat campy and cheesy.

The movie stars Corey Yuen and Sandra Kwan Yue Ng, so you are definitely in for some adequate comedy performance, and they do carry the movie quite well.

Visually then "Shi Jia Zhong Di" was not an outstanding movie. Sure, I liked the costumes and the sets, but the papier-mâché make-up on the vampire was just horrible to look at.

All in all, then "Shi Jia Zhong Di" is a watchable and somewhat enjoyable movie. I will say that it is sufficient entertainment for a single viewing. I doubt that I will ever be returning to watch this movie ever again though.

My rating of "Shi Jia Zhong Di" lands on a five out of ten stars.

Just noticed that Mortuary Blues does not have any reviews, well it does now.

Another winning Hong Kong ghosty comedy, some very funny bits here.

The cast is strong, Sandra Ng, Lowell Lo, Corey Yuen and Amy Yip amongst others.

If you like the type it is very good.

8 to 8.5 out of 10.
