Before 'View from the Top'
sol-3 July 2016
Assorted misfits train to become flight attendants at a special college and get up to mischief while living on campus in this curious attempt to cross 'Animal House' with 'Airplane!' and 'Police Academy'. Long unavailable on DVD, the film does not have the most positive of reputations, but it does have a small cult following and it easy to see why. The gags that misfire are absolutely groan-inducing (flatulence in an elevator; a zillion pratfalls), but the ones that work are highly memorable - the best of which being the way one very innovative stewardess 'relieves' a stressed-out claustrophobic passenger. Another memorable part involves a prank on the female change rooms gone awry. Juvenile as some of the gags are (a literal salami to hide), the chief pitfall of the film is the lack of well developed characters. The two main male characters do not have much in the way of charm and charisma, while the female characters are barely defined beyond what they were before becoming stewardesses: spoiled rich kid, prostitute, etc. The fact that there are no big name stars in the cast has probably also contributed to the film's descent into obscurity (though Wendie Jo Sperber is great as always). This is, however, a far more decent film than one might expect with some positive and affirming messages about the ability of outcasts and those in the periphery to band together and succeed as a team. It would be an overstatement to describe 'Stewardess School' as an inspirational film, but it is an offbeat testament to the power of teamwork at the very least.

Do they even have schools for stewardesses?
Groverdox11 January 2019
The movie is called "Stewardess School", although stewardesses are by definition female, and there are men at the school too, some of whom are main characters. That does not inspire confidence.

I guess it's another in the line of movies about a group of wacky misfits trying to make it through training to become... whatever hadn't been done yet. Think of "Stripes", "Police Academy", "Young Doctors in Love", "STITCHES".

You might not have heard of the last two, and there's a reason for that: the're garbage, like this one is.

"Stewardess School" seems to have not that bad a budget, but it just doesn't work. It's not funny in the least, most of its attempts at humour being more confusing than anything else.

"Stripes" worked because it had talent like Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, John Candy, Judge Reinhold, John Larroquette, Warren Oates. Even "Police Academy" managed some memorable characters. "Stewardess School" has... what? A guy who is very near sighted, so he wears coke-bottle glasses. Ho ho. A spoilt rich girl who is slumming it as a biker punk girl... but after the movie introduces her, in a bizarrely out-of-place scene, it forgets about her for about another hour or so, leaving you thinking, "what was the point of that scene with the rich biker punk girl?" Why introduce her, and then do nothing with her?

These problems could have been solved with some basic screenplay maintenance. Give it some kind of structure, anything. Maybe trim the endless list of forgettable characters. They could have combined two or three of these character traits into one character and made the whole thing a little easier to follow.

What it is, is a mess. An endless mess. A tiring mess. A mess so bad I had to start writing this review to distract me from the movie's final act, which is obviously supposed to be the point where all the wacky characters' crazy traits actually come in handy and save the day.

The movie does have a few people in it you might recognize. Sandahl Bergman, from "Conan" and "All That Jazz". And Earl Boen, whose name you may not know, but you've definitely seen him in at least one - probably two - of the "Terminator" movies. And lastly, Don Most, providing a great indication as to why his post-"Happy Days" career went absolutely nowhere.

While writing, planning, filming, editing and marketing this movie, did anybody stop to ask the question: do they even HAVE schools for stewardesses, anyway? Do you really need to go to "school" to get that job? At least "Stripes" and "Police Academy" were send ups of organizations that actually exist.

Magical
BandSAboutMovies13 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Any movie that starts with a plane crashing into downtown LA that's played as a total farce is one I'm going to remember. Philo (Brett Cullen, who was on Falcon Crest and played Johnny Blaze's dad in 2007's Ghost RIder) has always wanted to be a pilot, but that crash - in a simulator - is because his contact lenses got knocked out by his friend and fellow pilot George (Donny Most, here booked as Don).

They decide that they want to stay on planes, so they enroll at Weidermeyer Academy, a stewardess schools. Imagine Police Academy throughout this movie, with the teachers like Miss "Ironpants" Grummet as the older cops and the students as the cadets. Mary Cadorette - who played Vicky, the girl who finally got Jack Tripper to settle down and go from Three's Company to Three's a Crowd - is Kelly Johnson, an extremely clumsy girl. There's a stereotypical gay guy. A frumpy overweight girl played by Wendie Jo Sperber, as Wendie played this role in nearly every film. There's Wanda Polanski, a pro wrestler who just lost her latest boyfriend played by Conan the Barbarian's Sandahl Bergman. Julia Montgomery - yes, Betty Childs herself - plays an overly nice version of that role. Corinne Bohrer plays a punk rock girl in love with a biker (she's a vet of these movies, appearing in Zapped!, Joysticks, Surf II, Revenge of the Nerds IV: Nerds in Love and the fourth Police Academy movie). And oh yeah - Judy Landers as Sugar Dubois, a hooker with a heart of gold that's on work release.

After going through hell, everyone graduates and gets a job at the struggling Stromboli Air. Their first flight has a blind person's convention and a man with a bomb who doses people with LSD. Of course, our heroes have to land the plane and fix things. But don't worry - everything works out just fine.

Voiceover artist Rob Paulsen (Pinky of Pinky and the Brain amonst 250 different animated characters and over 1000 commercials) shows up in a rare live action role. Sherman Helmsley appears briefly as Mr. Buttersworth. And the owner of the school is played by William Bogert, who hosted the Frontline segments on Chapelle's Show.

If you had Comedy Central in the 1990's, there's a good chance you saw this movie. Trust me. You did.

Avoid like the plague
Beavistex344 December 1998
Simply put, one of the stupidest and least watchable movies I have ever had the displeasure to encounter.

No redeeming value to it.

None.

Small Bits and Pieces of Humor Here and There
Uriah4316 September 2016
After being kicked out of pilot training, two young men named "Philo Henderson" (Brett Cullen) and "George Bunkle" (Don Most) decide to try their luck at a local stewardess school in the hope of meeting some attractive young ladies. What they don't count on is that this particular school has lowered its standards to such a degree that all of their fellow students are predominantly losers as well. And this creates all kinds of problems for everyone trying to graduate. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this specific movie was essentially a recycled version of "Police Academy" with a few minor tweaks added in order to portray a slightly different setting. There isn't anything really new or original here. Yet having said all of that there are still small bits and pieces of humor here and there that might entertain a viewer on a rainy day. If nothing else it has a few attractive actresses like Mary Cadorette (as "Kelly Johnson"), Judy Landers ("Sugar Dubois") and Julia Montgomery ("Pimmy Polk") to brighten an otherwise lackluster film. Slightly below average.

bad 80s sex comedy
SnoopyStyle24 January 2016
Philo Henderson (Brett Cullen) can barely see without his contacts or glasses. He and best friend George Bunkle (Don Most) fail out of flight school. George gets them into stewardess school's four week course. Cindy Adams (Corinne Bohrer)'s rich parents bribe her biker boyfriend Snake to send her back to school. Kelly Johnson (Mary Cadorette) is jinxed and caused chaos as a concert drummer. Wanda Polanski (Sandahl Bergman) quits wrestling for a chance at love. Former hooker Sugar Dubois (Judy Landers) is on probation. Pimmie Polk (Julia Montgomery) is bubbly. Jolean Winters (Wendie Jo Sperber) is weight-conscious.

Brett Cullen is not good enough to be the comedic lead. To make matters worst, Don Most is the comedic side-kick. The actresses have some characters with comedic potential. Who knows if the girls could have been better on their own. I don't think they're sharp enough either. A few of them have played opposite comedians and Wendie Jo has some skills. The material simply isn't there. This is a weak comedy with no laughs.

Lame brains, unite!!!
emm26 December 1998
Without the help of Sherman Hemsley cast as a blind airline traveler in shades, STEWARDESS SCHOOL would have been much worse than a major overseas hijacking on board. This is by far the closest thing to POLICE ACADEMY I've ever seen, and it shows itself among all other rip-offs in its class. Bras and undies don't rescue a sour tasteless comedy! You will most definitely forget this one and stick with Mahoney, Hightower, Jones, and the whole gang in numerous P.A. outings. As the Man said, it should've stayed on the shelf!

Good 80's film.
iwatcheverything24 December 2003
How can this be so low? This is another film that is not as bad as it's rating. Yes it is a comedy that gets most of it's laughs from sex jokes but that is definitly nothing new. The acting in the movie was okay for some but of course it does not take much acting in these films. It was really a naughty film and does show nudity. Makes me wonder why the guys who watch this film are complaining. Were they expecting an intellectual piece when they rented this film. It is not the best movie of all times but for a few good laughs see if you can find this film and watch it sometime.

Hard to put in words how bad this movie is
vintagetbird5 May 2011
I knew going in that any movie with Vito Scotti, Judy Landers, Sherman Hemsley and Donny Most was going to be a waste of my time. I just happened to be in one of those late night moods that called for a waste-of-time movie. The fact that I knew it was going to be a bad experience and I was still peed off afterward oughta tell you what a pile of refuse this thing is. Just...frickin'....HORRIBLE. And that freeze on Donny Most's mug at the very end is enough to gag you. Those four "actors" should meet at the ATM, withdraw $20 each, buy the perpetual rights to this abomination and then burn every copy in existence.

'Stewardess School is the comedy that expands far more than your horizons!'
Weirdling_Wolf25 April 2022
This flighty, full-throttle 80s comedy, while a frequently turbulent affair, remains an agreeably 'bumpy' ride, and the scintillatingly saucy shenanigans of sinfully shapely stewardess Judy Landers enthusiastically 'taking off' for nude horizons teasingly makes for one of the most stratospherically sexy airline adventures of all time! So buckle up B-Comedy fans as the splendidly smutty, high-pulchritude 'Stewardess School' is one fast-moving, jive-talking, bra-bustingly bawdy, in-flight frolicking, mile high comedy club that openly accepts all willing members! This is the sublimely silly, fleshly fabulous fun-fest that will soon have you matriculating like a boss! While some have accused Blancato's salacious 'Stewardess School' of simply winging it, I sincerely feel that these aerodynamically delicious, studiously swinging stewardesses enthusiastically earned their wings the 'hard' way! So, leave your terrestrial troubles behind, and take a non-stop, terrifically titillating top-flight trip to titter-town in cloud-busting comedy caper 'Stewardess School, that lustily expands far more than your horizons!

Good To Look At, But That's About It
izzyloisel14 December 2022
This movie started off catching my attention with the bright 80s aesthetic, and continued to entertain me until about half way. The aesthetics unfortunately were not enough to make up for the overall boring plot. I don't think two men going to a place where "hot women" are supposed to be prowling around is anything new or exciting. It mainly just sets a stage.

Although the costume, makeup and hair are awesome that's really about it. The comedy is a bit outdated for this day in age, but the over the top 80s-ness of it all is still pretty humorous and campy. Also, for a movie that's X-rated its really not all that raunchy, just more suggestive.

Overall I think its a fun, campy 80s film not meant to be taken too seriously.

Mean-spirited "comedy" that should be forgotten
pineapplediciple9 February 2023
To be perfectly honestly I haven't watched that many old school raunchy comedy films, and after Stewardess School I'm hoping this isn't representative of the genre. The plot is baffling, the characters one dimensional, and the "comedy" is totally lacking. So much of the humor truly feels like something from a different era, going for cheap laughs at the expense of its characters.

In particular the "fat" stewardess gets absolutely brutalized by the movie and it's just painful to see, serving her humiliation after humiliation. She's not even that big! And it's gross seeing how domesticated another stewardess is by her awful boyfriend, who at no point gets any kind of comeuppance for being an all-round terrible human being. I did like the bimbo stewardess though, she was so over the top horny I couldn't help enjoying her.

I watched this movie because I love flying and got disappointed by how little a film called "Stewardess School" seemed to care about the topic. Most of the characters don't even want the job, and the main character who supposedly does love flying barely mentions that after his first few scenes. I doubt anyone who actually worked in aviation had anything to do with this movie, the creators of the film obviously just wanted to have a setting where lots of women would be around. The most jarring example is how the three engined airliner that the characters board in the last act of the film turns into a two engined model mid flight, the lack of care is pathetic.

I'm not sure why someone would ever want to watch this film outside of nostalgia or liking the actors, it has nothing else to offer. If you want to watch something about flight attendants watch A View From the Top: deeply cheesy and not very good but a masterpiece compared to this trash.

A Classic USA's Up All Night Film!!!
DobbinsJ9 September 1999
This is a must see if you watch USA's Up All Night with Gilbert Godfried & Rhonda. Simply put, it's a corn-ball movie with sex as a major theme. However, this movie contains one of the funniest scenes ever. Wendy Jo Sperber finds a a bomb on the plane. After it detonates, she uses her large "behind" to plug the hole until the plane lands. Highly unrealistic but truly original.

Stewardess School falls short of being a good movie, but its '80s charm makes it worth a watch
kevin_robbins25 January 2024
I recently watched Stewardess School (1986) on Tubi. The storyline revolves around a group of misfits in flight steward school. For graduation, they must work a real flight, showcasing they're more than misfits. The lives of passengers hang in the balance during their final exam.

Directed and written by Ken Blancato in his sole directorial project, the film features Brett Cullen (The Dark Knight Rises), Sandahl Bergman (Conan the Barbarian), Don Most (Happy Days), Judy Landers (Armed and Dangerous), Robert Paulsen (Pinky and the Brain), and Sherman Hemsley (The Jeffersons).

The movie exudes '80s vibes, resembling a mix of Porky's and Airplane, albeit not reaching the heights of either. This film carries a fun nostalgic cast, notable Judy Landers stands out for being smoking hot as always. While the humor may miss more than hit, memorable moments like a Twisted Sister line and a fantastic crushed nuts conversation add some laughs. The shower scene stands out as the movie's highlight.

In conclusion, Stewardess School falls short of being a good movie, but its '80s charm makes it worth a watch. I would give it a score of 3.5-4/10 and recommend watching it at least once.

80's Sex Comedy Missing Laughs!
cynet-5233214 November 2022
I have just had the misfortune of having watched this pile of steaming horse manure.

Love Police Academy that was funny this rip-off is not even remotely funny.

Don Most from happy days nolstalgia is playing exactly the same character he did in the happy days series. I was half expecting the Fonze to turn up to basically to tell Don character this movie isn't cool bro!

The other main male character is as dull as they come with bad eyesight to make him more comical. Well it fails because his acting is atrocious and being short sighted like Mr Magoo was funny once in 1960 but not in the 80's.

The sex antics are embarrassing and just so lame it just isn't funny.

The women characters are so one dimensional and boring it beggars belief the script got past the motion board of pictures.

Columbia pictures should be up for the trades description act for advertising this as a comedy when I have had bigger laughs watching a live execution on death row.

Don't belive the hype this film stinks on a huge level of dumbness and belive me you will never start laughing from start to finish guaranteed.

Not that funny but watchable
pmtelefon14 May 2023
"Stewardess School" has a cast packed with familiar faces of that era. Almost everyone in the movie is recognizable without actually knowing their name or where you know them from. "Stewardess School" doesn't have that many laughs (although I did laugh out loud once toward the end) it does have a lot of goodwill going for it. It's one of those comedies where I'm not sure if I was laughing with it or at it. If you know what I mean. The female cast members, for the most part, where quite dreamy back then. A few of them were among my favorites. By the way, any movie with Donny Most (Donald in this movie) in it can't be all bad.

Silly sexy oriented comedy from Airplane rip-off style, even so funny entertainment!!
elo-equipamentos15 October 2023
Another silly sexy-comedy on airplane rip-off formula, where a bunch of losers went to stewardess school to enter in commercial planes, a blind guy Philo (Brett Cullen) flunked as Airplane's pilot enters on school together his clumsy friend Bunkle (Donald Most) also several girls inapt in others jobs try a luck in the sky, the school actually is a lousy place to learning such harder profession whereof needing skilled persons to reach in this so competitive business, however the director doesn't care whose are those contenders, his goal is gather more money he can from those moronic pupils.

Her secretary and teacher reproaches his boss to accept so odd team, somehow along the course straining hardly the class trying reprove all them due they are fools students, anyhow they overcame the bitter teacher and all them got a job in a lousy Air company in a experimental flight to get so awaited admittance on USA's territory, when the aircraft takes off all sort odd misfortunes take place on fatal fight with a bomb man on board,

Extremally sexy oriented comedy is an average entertainment for those less demanding viewers, weirdo sequences on plane, in toilette, in cabin, every single scene is hilarious and tacky as well, many gorgeous actress steal the picture as Sandahl Bergman, Judy Landers, the twins Dian Gallup and Denise Gallup and the blonde Lilian Muller, not bad as the ratings suggest.

Thanks for reading

Standard 80's Comedy
benstoker17 March 2023
Fun, over the top comedy of two guys thrown out of flight school, so they join stewardess school. It's pretty cliche on it's 80's comedy tropes, the blind guy with glasses, the clutz, the over sexualized stripper, the strong but sexy female and more. It's basically a clone of such comedies as Revenge of the Nerds and Police Academy. And though not as good as those two movies, it's still fairly entertaining and some of the jokes/scenes are genuinely funny.

It's mostly harmless, but there are a lot of sex jokes and some fairly long nudity scenes (breasts only). It was like a mandatory element of these movies in the 80s that if there was nudity it had to be in the shower at least once.

Overall, I'd watch it again.

There actually is such a thing
Sean_M_5 October 2022
Yes, stewardesses have to go to 'school'. Most airlines typically have a months' long training camp where you have to room with other potential employees in which undesirable candidates are weeded out. For those not bright enough to remember all of the 3-letter airport abbreviations and other intellectually demanding tasks they receive the boot.

Anyway, this 'gem' I remember from cable TV days is a real diamond in the rough. The jokes are crude and lewd! What do you expect from a movie starring the one and only Judy Landers or even Don Most? This movie can provoke the same reaction as Recruits (1986) which is a sex comedy rip-off of Police Academy. I remember begging my mom to take me to see that movie thinking it was hilarious but my mom didn't agree with me for some reason. For those looking for a family friendly comedy you need to look elsewhere.

ALMOST Naked Gun-esque.
orangecakemix14 September 2002
Campy slapstick spoof with many familiar faces living it up while majoring courses in stewardess school (Does such a school really exist?). Although cheesy, it's become somewhat of a cult classic.

Kind of hard to find in video rental stores today but airs frequently on cable TV's Comedy Central station. Most notable for one of Donny Most's rare appearances outside of 'Happy Days'.

Silly Comedy
Sylviastel13 January 2023
It has a great cast with many familiar faces from television. Judy Landers played a parolee who goes to stewardess school. Mary Cadorette played a musical klutz. Wendie Jo Sperber plays a plump student. Corrine Bohrer played a rebellious Cindy Adams, a rich girl who rebels against her rich family. The head teacher at the school has it in it for the students. They pretty much let anyone into the school. When they graduate, they all get hired by Stromboli airlines, a struggling airlines. The first flight is an airplane full of people. A lot of familiar character actors and actresses are seen throughout the film. It's not a great film but an okay comedy.

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film on HBO in the Bahamas in 1988, and my life was indelibly and profoundly changed as a result. Sometimes a film just touches your heart. It hits some sort of nerve, and you look at the world differently. Great art does that. Stew School did that.

Following my seeing this film..this masterpiece..my life took on new meaning. I became intensely focused and extremely goal-oriented. Every day was like a gift. Whenever I was feeling down, I just thought about Snake and a smile came to my face. Whenever I was thinking I just couldn't do something, I think of Larry Falkwell trying to retrieve the keys. Whenever I worry about my health, Paul Barselou's brilliant characterization of the medical field eases my mind. Not a day in my life goes by that I don't think of this film. Why it was not included in AFI's 100 movies of all time, I'll never understand. Why, "Big chunks" did make AFI's 100 best movie quotes is beyond explanation. Thank God I went to the Bahamas in 1988. Thank God I got a horrible sunburn and had to stay inside watching TV. Thank the lord the hotel had HBO. And I shudder to even think how empty my life would have been had Stew School not been on HBOs lineup in February of 1988.
