Yoshihiro Togashi is seen by many as one of the most influential manga artists ever. He created two very popular series, Hunter X Hunter and Yu Yu Hakusho, which have had a big effect on manga.
Togashi has a special style that makes him different from other manga creators. As said by Jason Thompson, who is a critic for manga, Togashi’s first one-shot works were a mixture of comedy set in school and allusions to horror movies. This showed the flexibility and imaginative sight of Togashi.
At the age of 24, Togashi made a significant step forward with the introduction of YuYu Hakusho, a series combining supernatural elements and fighting comedy that was well-received by readers.

“Juvenile Delinquents Turn Heroes,” proclaims a newspaper headline in S.E. Hinton’s 1967 novel The Outsiders, which was famously adapted for the screen in 1983 by Francis Ford Coppola. And the juvenile delinquents on stage at the Bernard J. Jacobs Theatre are doing the same, rescuing a Broadway season overstuffed with undercooked musicals in an unexpectedly persuasive new adaptation of Hinton’s scrappy, moving story.
This show follows close on the heels of two other book-to-movie-to-musical adaptations, The Notebook and Water for Elephants. But The Outsiders far outstrips them both in the sophisticated storytelling of Adam Rapp and Justine Levine’s book, the adventurous staging of director Danya Taymor, and the dramatically specific and potent score from Levine and folk duo Jamestown Revival. Put another way, The Outsiders is, at last, a darn good musical.

His last novel, Mayflies, was adapted as a drama series by BBC in 2022 starring Martin Compston, Tony Curran and Ashley Jensen.

Remember Baz Luhrmann’s early 2000 film about romance and music in Paris? Yes, we are referring to the 2001 release of the jukebox musical Moulin Rouge!, which film critic Roger Ebert once likened to “being trapped on an elevator with the circus”.
In the 2001 flick, we saw English writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) pen his love story on his typewriter as he mourned the loss of his beloved Satine (Nicole Kidman). You may not be aware, though, that multiple actors tried out for the role of Christian but were not selected. Among them were Leonardo DiCaprio, Heath Ledger, and Jake Gyllenhaal; Ethan Hawke was also considered for the part.

During a recent interview with Howard Stern, the Prisoners actor disclosed that he and Ledger were both “disappointed” about losing the role.

Jake Gyllenhaal recently reflected on two big roles that got away.
The 43-year-old Road House star has appeared in many iconic movies over the years. However, no Hollywood actor books every part that they audition for.
In a new interview, Jake explained how it felt to find out that a director was going in another direction. He shared two specific instances where that happened to him. One was for a fan-favorite musical movie. Another entailed playing a popular superhero.
Read more about the roles that Jake Gyllenhaal did not book…
While on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, Jake revealed that the roles in question were Christian in Moulin Rouge and Batman in Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight trilogy. Ewan McGregor landed the musical, which Christian Bale was selected to play the Caped Crusader.
In regards to Batman, Jake said that he knew that Christian “and a few others” were all vying for the role.

Since Metallic Rouge was announced at Fuji TV Anime Lineup Presentation 2023, it was clear that the new anime series from the prestigious Bones studio would be an emotive way to commemorate the first 25 years of the company made by ex-key members of Sunrise Studio (now Bandai Namco Filmworks). Most anime enthusiasts know Bones for series like My Hero Academia , Fullmetal Alchemist (both adaptations), Bungo Stray Dogs , Mob Psycho 100 and movies like Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop and Josee, the Tiger and the Fish . But true fans of the studio’s vast filmography know that their original works had an important impact on the anime industry since their beginning. So, why is Metallic Rouge so perfect to celebrate Bones’ first 25 years? Impressive Original Stories As a futuristic mystery thriller, the strongest element of the story is how Toshizo Nemoto ( Log Horizon ) and Yutaka Izubuchi ( Space Battleship Yamato 2199 ) tell the story of...

Studio Bones, known for producing shows like Fullmetal Alchemist and My Hero Academia, celebrates 25 years with a new original sci-fi anime for Crunchyroll. Metallic Rouge takes place in a world where humans and androids coexist. The story follows Rouge, an android girl (aka a Nean), who is on a mission on Mars with her investigative partner Naomi. The mission is to murder nine artificial humans who are hostile to the government called Alters. “If you like Blade Runner, you’ll love Metallic Rouge,” producer and president of Bones Masahiko Minami told TV Insider while talking to members of the press. Although the series uses the youth of its two leads to bring about a budding relationship and some humor, the heart of the story is delving into what makes a living being human and our relationship with technology. Metallic Rouge has been in production for over six years at Studio Bones,...

New Year’s is a time to make resolutions. Maybe you want to work out more, or sort out your love life, or make a big career change. And maybe your resolution is to watch more indie movies, or possibly some anime.
2023 was a banner year for anime as a medium, between great series like “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” and a major film release with Hayao Miyazaki’s last masterpiece “The Boy and the Heron.” As such, 2024’s anime offerings have a lot to live up to — and based on the lineup of shows that are premiering this January, we’re off to a promising start.
As with every season, winter 2024 has both returning favorites as well as new shows to enjoy. One particularly anticipated returnee is the beloved but rarely airing “Blue Exorcist,” which is premiering its third season after its second bowed back in 2017. Based on the popular manga by Kazue Kato,...

Sinestra, the production banner launched by Chernobyl director Johan Renck and producer Michael Parets, has teamed with entertainment giant Fremantle to option Rouge, the upcoming novel from bestselling Canadian author Mona Awad, for film following a competitive auction.
Described as “Snow White meets Eyes Wide Shut,” Rouge is a horror-tinted gothic fairy tale about a lonely dress shop clerk whose mother’s unexpected death sends her down a treacherous path in pursuit of youth and beauty. Set in California, the story explores the cult-like nature of the beauty industry — as well as “the danger of internalizing its pitiless gaze.”
Set to be published in September this year by Simon & Schuster/Marysue Rucci Books, Rouge is the latest novel from Awad, behind All’s Well, 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl and Bunny, which was listed among the best book of 2019 by Time, Vogue and the New York Public Library.

“Split” was produced by Fabienne Servan-Schreiber et Charlotte Ortiz at Paris-based Cinétévé for the French broadcaster France Televisions’ digital platform Slash.
The show revolves around Anna, a 30 year-old stuntwoman who falls in love with a famous actress during a film shoot. The attractive cast includes Alma Jodorowsky (“The Serpent”), Jehnny Beth, Ralph Amoussou, and Pauline Chalamet.
Hago is also attending Series Mania with “Sex (re) Education” (“Septième Ciel”) and will be pitching the show at the Coming Next from France session.
The series, produced by Henri Debeurme and Aurélia Grossmann’s Next Episode, was awarded best TV series at the Fiction Festival of La Rochelle last year. It premiered on Ocs in January and pulled some of the pay TV channel’s highest ratings.

Goran Stolevski’s “Of An Age” won Australia’s richest film prize of A100,000 at CinefestOz at a gala closing night over the weekend in Busselton, Western Australia.
The Macedonian born, Melbourne based writer and director Stolevski also presented his much-lauded first feature “We Are Not Alone” at the festival.
The CinefestOZ film prize is dedicated to new Australian-made films and consisted of four finalists. The others also included Gracie Otto’s comedy “Seriously Red,”, the world premiere of Matt Nable’s intense drama “Transfusion,” starring Sam Worthington and audience favorite, “Sweet As,” the first-time feature by local indigenous director Jub Clerc.

Sony Pictures has acquired the film rights to best-selling author Richard Kirshenbaum’s first novel “Rouge” about the glitzy-glam, competitive 20th century beauty industry, Variety has learned.
Wendy Finerman (“The Devil Wears Prada”) will produce the project, which will cast A-list actresses in the lead roles of the business titans, who are suspiciously similar to real-life foes Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein.
“Rouge” details the cutthroat world of the beauty business world between the two rivals. The novel is set in cities across the world such as NYC, Hollywood, Palm Beach, London, and Paris and St Martin’s Press Executive Editor Beier likened the story to “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” in style and time-period.
The book will hit stores on “Rouge” on June 25, but it sold in an auction based on the galleys.
“’Rouge’ makes you want to stand up and cheer for these iconic cosmetic industry pioneers. These women were brilliant,...

Supernatural movies, featuring ghosts, “Geung si” and other entities are an important part of Hong Kong Cinema and its cultural heritage. “Encounters of the Spooky Kind” (1980), “Mr Vampire” (1985), “Rouge” (1987), “A Chinese Ghost Story” (1990) are only some of my favorite unmissable ones from the 80’s and 90’s.
Genre-bending movies, often blending horror, comedy, romance and kung fu, they are now an endangered species. After Hong Kong’s handover in 1997, many local filmmakers started making co-productions with the Mainland, where the supernatural films are considered a forbidden subject; therefore, they simply don’t get made anymore, except for some rare and brave case. In fact, those kinds of films have turned into a sort of statement by filmmakers that are committed to making Cantonese language films for distribution in Hong Kong and outside, but not the Mainland.

Remains after a 90-minute feast of fetus-filled dumplings concocted by director Fruit Chan is not the horror that typically follows a movie classified as such. Instead, it’s a farrago of trepidation (indeed), unrelenting sadness, and nostalgic longing. Embellished by Christopher Doyle’s mesmerizing visuals, Chan’s “Dumplings” elevates a gruesome tale of cannibalism to a classy metaphor of Hong Kong after 1997, caught amid hysterical attempts by its dwellers to hold onto bygones.
There in Hong Kong it’s said, Aunt Mei makes the most delicious dumplings. Her recipe a mystery, its efficacy an established fact, and its results a cause widely sought after. Eternal youth and beauty so long as money is put into Aunt Mei’s hands. A handsome deal for well-to-do Hongkongers.
And so, having lost her wealthy, 50-something husband’s affections to a much younger masseuse, a retired actress – Miss Lee – reluctantly ventures...
