The 25th edition of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival is about to kick off, and between 12-28 of November the audience will have the oportunity to watch a great number of films from Asia, strewn across festival’s various program sections, including all competition segments. We went through the complete program and counted no more or less than 69 films from the broader Asian region.
Quite surprising is the amount of competition titles in the main selection, with three world premieres, four international. Lu ZHang’s “Yanagawa” will have its European premiere at PÖFF.
Yerzhanov returns to Tallinn a year after he presented two films at the festival, the main competition title “Ulbolsyn” about a woman who comes to a Kazhak village to “steer trouble”, and the oddball comedy “Yellow Cat” screened in the Current Waves program. Has this ever happened to you? You’re sitting on a bar stool, in a bar, and when I say bar I don’t mean some uptown fancy bistro with little foo-foo umbrellas in the drinks and ferns hanging from the ceiling. I’m talking about a bar man, a dive, a saloon, a watering hole, like you find in south St. Louis where the doors stay open in the summer so neighborhood dogs can run in and out and drunks can stagger out and get some fresh air without having to try and work a door knob, so they can stagger out and get a grip before they heave up all that beer they’ve been drinking and paid for out of money they should have spent on the rent.
So anyway you’re sitting in this low class joint, drinking beer, and the occasional...

During Saturday night’s electrifying Olympic final in men’s 10 meter platform diving, viewers likely caught a glimpse or two of eventual gold medal winner David Boudia with a large pair of headphones latched to his head. According to Boudia, it’s more than likely that’s how he would look if you saw him anywhere else, too. “I have over 2,000 songs on my phone that travel with me everywhere, and my headphones are constantly in my ears,” the Indiana native told EW last month, the day before he was to leave for London, his second Olympics after Beijing. “I...

After doing the rounds on VoD for a few weeks, where many of you will have seen it, Sarah Polley's "Take This Waltz" starts to roll out in theaters from tomorrow, and we can't recommend it enough; it's a messy, sometimes frustrating film, but a deeply felt, beautifully made and wonderfully acted one, and we named it last week as one of the best of the year so far. It is not, however, recommended as a date movie, fitting into a long cinematic tradition of painful examinations of broken, decaying, collapsing or dead relationships.
After all, it's one of the more universal human experiences; unless you get very lucky, everyone who falls in love will at some point have the wrenching experience of falling out of it, or being fallen out of love with. And when done best in film, it can be bruising and borderline torturous for a filmmaker and an audience,...

Hysteria, a film that is ” based on true events “, takes several unrelated elements to create an unexpected cinema delight. It’s set in Victorian England, so we’ve got the look of a ” Masterpiece Theatre”-type prestige production. And because of that historical aspect, you may expect something very somber and serious. It’s about the creation of a new invention, but this is not a film for a high school history class. Its cast is full of well-respected British actors ( and a terrific American ) who seem to be having a grand ole’ time. A good way to describe this film is Merchant-Ivory by way of Judd Apatow.

Emma Stone is about to be launched into the stratosphere this summer. The actress who worked her way up the ladder with considerable charm in a string of films ("Superbad," "Easy A," "Stupid Crazy Love," "The Help") features in her first franchise in "The Amazing Spider-Man." Then later this fall, she'll go all femme fatale alongside the macho cast of "Gangster Squad." But lest you think she doesn't have time to have fun anymore, you'd be mistaken.
EW reports that Stone will make a cameo appearance in the hugely popular Nickelodean show "iCarly." Since I'm not a girl or twelve years old, I've never seen this show, but it's a pretty big deal for a certain demographic and having Stone pop up will be a nice treat, particularly as it will be the final season for the program. Anyway, in the episode that will air later this year, Stone will...

As he’s currently shooting the Al Pacino, Alan Arkin, and Christopher Walken buddy comedy Stand Up Guys, a press release announces that Fisher Stevens — who, just a few years back, won an Oscar for producing the acclaimed documentary The Cove — will next helm an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel American Pastoral, which Lakeshore and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment are producing.
Originally written by Philip Roth — and adapted by John Romano (The Lincoln Lawyer) — the ’60s-set story follows Seymour “the Swede” Levov, an idealistic American do-gooder whose family is torn apart when his daughter, a rebellious girl, is arrested for illegal acts in protest of the Vietnam War. The moral quandaries created here sound right in line with Stevens‘ documentary, Crazy Love, or first narrative, Just a Kiss — and it’s in a period I’m wholly fascinated with, to boot. Let’s hope this one comes together with the right team.

HollywoodNews.com:In the weekend before the official start of the summer season, four new releases, all of which were relatively smaller fare, all debuted to numbers ranging from not awful to genuinely awful (or example 4,321 on why comparing total weekend box office is stupid). The top film this weekend was once again Think Like A Man, which dropped a surprisingly decent 46%, earning another $18 million. The ensemble romantic comedy has now earned $60 million, putting it on track to be among the domestic bigger grossers of the first 1/3 of 2012.
If we’re specifically talking ‘black-films’, then the Tim Story picture is a few days from outgrossing every Tyler Perry movie save Madea Goes to Jail, which grossed $90 million three years ago (the second highest-grossing Perry film is the $63 million-grossing Madea’s Family Reunion). With a smaller drop and a larger second weekend off a $8 million-smaller opening weekend, it may pass that mark...

Alright, you hopefully read our Tribeca Film Festival review of Nicholas Stoller's "The Five Year Engagement" this morning. We hear that It's a sweet and funny comedy that veers off in tangents, but fortunately, it never loses its way.
Hot on its heels comes the info of the accompanying soundtrack Ep, a brief five-song set with some interesting and comical connections. For music-heads that like their swooning, bittersweet and soulful pop songs comes the reveal of a few Van Morrison songs: "Crazy Love," performed by Audra Mae, another cover of "Into The Mystic" done by The Swell Season (the musical duo from the film "Once") and "When The Evening Sun Goes Down" by Brett Dennen. We hear there's a least one actual Van Morrison song featured in the film as well.
Rather hilariously (and this writer assumes this is a minor comedic spoiler so watch out), the opening track...

Toronto -- Indie-rock songstress Leslie Feist took home a Juno for Artist of the Year on Sunday night, and jazz crooner Michael Buble's holiday-themed "Christmas" claimed the prize for Album of the Year at the 41st annual Canadian music awards ceremony.
Feist, best known for her whimsical 2007 song "1234," which became an international hit after it was featured in an iPod nano commercial, might have surprised some with Sunday night's win since her contemplative fourth disc, "Metals," wasn't nominated for Album of the Year.
Feist's big win brought her Juno tally to three for the weekend, and 11 for her career.
"I just need a second," she marveled as she stepped to the microphone, shaking her head from side to side, looking stunned, as well as stunning in a red, lace dress.
"I'm just in shock. ... I guess all I can really do is try to express some genuine gratitude. I can't believe I'm standing here.

Nickelback and Michael Buble were in an extremely tight race for the top of The Billboard 200 this week, but it was the latter that won out. The soft jazz singer’s “Christmas” sold slightly more than 227,000 copies, while the Canadian rock band’s new “Here and Now” debuted with just a little less than 227,000, a difference of 0.18%. That makes it three No. 1 albums for Buble, who took the top with 2007’s “Call Me Irresponsible” and 2009’s “Crazy Love.” This week’s sum is also his best sales week ever. Nickelback’s last album, 2008’s “Dark Horse,” debuted...

Fernando Meirelles's 360 makes for a disappointing start to the London film festival and Jude Law can't be bothered dressing up for the red carpet
Sandra's revolutionary exit
Despite London's position as a key city for world cinema, global ensemble piece 360 wasn't the best of openers for the 55th London film festival. The film, directed by Fernando Mereilles, is too bitty and fragmented, never allowing a character, setting or storyline to develop before nipping off on some tangential, frustrating bit-plot. We're all connected, says the film's schematic screenplay, right? On opening night, ran the joke at the after-party, half the BlackBerry users in the industry weren't. Outgoing Lff director Sandra Hebron has had a great record with her opening galas over the last 10 years, showcasing distinctive work even when the choices have been eccentric (Fantastic Mr Fox) or downers (Vera Drake). It’s not every day I find myself attending screenings for films that haven’t been made yet – let alone released – but I was delighted to attend my friend Daniel Johnson’s pre-production promo event for his upcoming debut feature Side By Side.
Held in the classy confines of Whitechapel’s Genesis Cinema, tonight was about raising awareness – and hopefully some cold hard cash – for the film. Daniel has previously helmed numerous short films, some of which were screened this evening in order to show off his considerable talent. We were treated to three shorts, Alone, Crazy Love and A Single Guy, all of which studied different aspects of relationships, often in comedic but always in interesting ways. Alone was a series of brief portraits of couples falling apart or failing to start; Crazy Love was a zany ‘meet-cute’ told from the point of view of a guy who seems...

Actress/singer Taryn Manning is hoping to convince director Scott Rosenbaum to include her music on the soundtrack to their new movie The Perfect Age Of Rock N' Roll with a starring performance at the premiere afterparty.
The star, who appears alongside actors Kevin Zegers and Jason Ritter in the music-themed drama, admits she is trying to win over Rosenbaum with her vocal skills and she's planning to hit the stage after walking the red carpet in New York on Wednesday to prove she has what it takes.
She tells WENN, "I'd love to (feature on the soundtrack) and I played the director a couple of songs. The soundtrack isn't done so anything can happen.
"Tonight is a party at the Brooklyn Bowl with all these legendary blues artists. I'm gonna sing a Rolling Stones cover, Miss You, with them so I'm really excited."
Manning has previously provided songs for a handful of her other film soundtracks, but she insists she doesn't push her music on filmmakers - it just happens to fit.
She says, "Everybody knows I'm a musician and a singer and they honour that about me so somehow my music ends up in films. I really don't try to hawk my CDs to any director; it's just somehow, whether I'm in my trailer playing guitar or they just hear about it, I end up in these music films with my music.
"I had my song Being Bad in my very first movie Crazy Beautiful, and my song Crazy Love in Crossroads and Wasting My Time is on the 8 Mile soundtrack with Eminem... It's been an interesting career because my acting and my music go hand in hand."...

Michael Bublé and his wife, Luisana Lopilato, walked hand in hand through The Grove in La yesterday. They were spotted on the sweet stroll after Michael revealed that the outdoor mall is one of his favorite spots during an appearance for Beringer & Bublé in St. Helena last weekend. Michael told us about himself and Luisana, saying, "We love going to The Grove. I'm friends with the gentleman who owns it. I just think it's such a romantic place." Michael Bublé also shared about another date night favorite, Tra di Noi, in Malibu. The couple may count Hollywood as one of their homes, but Michael and Luisana seemed to enjoy their recent time in Northern California. Luisana took advantage of her first trip to Napa by lounging poolside and getting a massage, while Michael talked wine with fellow enthusiast Jason Priestley and took the stage in front of about 300 lucky fans and special guests.

Michael Bublé made a special appearance at Beringer Vineyards in St. Helena on Friday. He's been working with the winery, which is one of his Crazy Love tour sponsors, throughout the year and made the trip to Napa to meet with press and perform for 200 lucky fans who won the Beringer & Bublé contest. Also on hand for the event were Jason Priestley and his wife, Naomi Lowde, who enjoyed dinner and watched the show from the audience. We sat down with Michael before he hit the stage and he showed off his charming personality, shared a sample of his sexy voice, and toasted the room with a glass of Beringer Sauvignon Blanc. During the chat, Michael opened up about meeting his wife, Luisana Lopilato, their wedding in Argentina, his Christmas album, and more: On being in Napa with Luisana: "She's here. I asked her if she wanted to come here...

Michael Bublé has vowed to help track down rioters in his home city of Vancouver, Canada after being left "disgusted" by the destruction that they caused. The Crazy Love singer has funded a series of advertisements that he hoped would identify any of the individuals who took part in a violent rampage on Wednesday night, which occured after hockey team the Vancouver Canucks were defeated by the Boston Bruins. 150 people, including 14 police officers, were injured in the widespread looting, fighting and arson attacks that followed the loss. Bublé has since appealed via a campaign in local newspapers for citizens to come forward with any information relating to the riots. "I was crushed. I felt sick inside. I'm so proud of my city and any chance I get I promote it," he told Vancouver's The Globe and Mail. "I tell people how great (more)...

Featuring: Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé
Two men, their lives together — and a major honkin’ art collection. Now you know what comprises the documentary “L’amour fou” (“Crazy Love”), an at-once intriguing look into the mind of a fashion genius, biography of a relationship and tour of some very well-stocked homes in Paris, Marrakech and Normandy.
Interest lies initially in the homes’ owners: In this case, designer Yves Saint-Laurent and his partner in business and life for decades, Pierre Bergé. Saint-Laurent died in 2008, leaving Bergé to tell their story alone, but director Pierre Thoretton alternates interviews with friends and colleagues with Bergé and includes significant archival footage of Saint-Laurent in candid and public moments. (The film opens with a press conference in which Saint-Laurent confesses his many foibles to an unseen audience and then an apparent retirement.

Michael Bublé is clearly crazy in love - and enjoying life as a newlywed. The "Crazy Love" singer, who has dual Italian and Canadian citizenship, was spotted getting cozy with his new bride, Luisana Loreley Lopilato de la Torre, in Venice, Italy, on what appeared to be a very romantic honeymoon. Bublé, 35, and Lopilato de la Torre, 23, toured the fabled Italian city looking every bit the happy couple basking in their wedded bliss. Their agenda included something no trip to Venice is complete without: an intimate gondola ride through the canals. Related: Michael Bublé Weds in ArgentinaThe couple, who met...

Less than a week into his tour to support new album “So Beautiful or So What,” Paul Simon hit the stage with a band so confident in its musical abilities that from the first notes of show opener “Crazy Love, Vol. ll,” they were fully in command and in the groove, literally. The April 21 Pantages Theatre show, Simon’s third in three days in Los Angeles, drew largely from the stellar new set, which debuted at No. 4 this week on the Billboard 200. There’s an open-hearted vulnerability in much of the album as Simon explores big-ticket questions about love and...

I will freely admit to having a particular fondness for upsetting documentaries. I’m intrigued by first-person narratives where terrible things happen to those telling the stories, to John Irving-esq tales of lives diverging in some horrible and unpredictable way. I am also fond of trashy docs; films about serial killers that present conjecture and hyperbole as fact and poorly-researched docs about neo-Nazis and Christian right-wing movements and generally tabloid-worthy investigations are the focus of some of my favourite things to watch for fun.
Unfortunately, Crazy Love is really neither. Too well researched and competently presented to be a trashy distraction but with a story far too trashy to be interesting in any other context, Dan Klores’s new film is a confusing experience.

Sam Attwater looked pretty….pretty awful…in pink on tonight’s Dancing On Ice.
The former Eastenders actor modelled an awful and cheap looking pink waistcoat for his routine with Canadian professional Brianne Delcourt on the ITV skating show.
Thankfully, the skating was better than the costume and as always the dynamic duo gave an almost perfect performance to ‘Crazy Love’. The five lifts all went without a hitch and though Sam was slightly more hesitant than usual, it was still a great and very elegant effort.
The judges awarded him 25.5, which wasn’t quite as high as last week, but Attwater claimed he was happy with the score because he said it had actually been the worst routine he has performed. We didn’t notice!

I have to admit, every year I tune into the Grammys I mentally prepare myself for disappointment. Yet I still watch, hoping that the granddaddy of music awards shows will exceed my admittedly low expectations.
I'm happy to say that this year they've done it (for the most part).
Gimmicky performances, undeserving nominees and baffling winners - the usual Grammy mainstays - were all on display last night, yet for every bad egg (seriously Gaga?) there was a nice surprise that put a smile on my face.
The show began with a tribute to 18-time Grammy award winner, and Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, Yolanda Adams, Christina Aguilera and Florence and the Machine's Florence Welch honored the ailed diva by singing a string of her hits.
Sadly, five powerful singers wailing away at once proved to be too much. It quickly turned into an oversinging competition,...

Singer Michael Buble has urged his fellow chart stars to donate to Australia's flood appeal after handing over his own cash to boost the relief fund.
The "Crazy Love" hit maker was stunned to see TV news footage last month of Queensland's devastating floods, which have left thousands homeless and killed at least 25 people. He's backing the government's efforts to help communities recover from the environmental disaster and he's also set up a meeting with Queensland Premier Anna Bligh to discuss ways he can help the relief process.
