Steven Universe is one of our favorite cartoons ever and so we were really excited to get to interview them at Comic Con.
We talked to Zach Callison (who is not only the voice of Steven, but also of Prince James in Sofia the First), Ian Jones-Quartey (storyboarded/animator), Michaela Dietz (Amethyst), Deedee Magno Hall (Pearl….who Anya has been singing along to since she was 2 years old — no kidding, Deedee was Jasmine in the Aladdin Spectacular at Disney’s California Adventure), Estelle (Garnet), and Rebecca Sugar, the show’s composer & creator, who incidentally was shattering glass ceilings as the first woman to independently create a series for Cartoon Network! What’s really cool about Rebecca, as you’ll find out in our interview is that she’s a bit of a musical theatre geek like us. She not only got a song idea from Sweeney Todd, but she quotes Bob Fosse too.

This mostly pitch-perfect musical from the New York Philharmonic shows why it's time to put proper orchestras behind shows again
Staging musicals as concerts is a tricky business but the New York Philharmonic's production of Sweeney Todd, starring Emma Thompson and Bryn Terfel, is an energetic theatrical performance that manages to hit the right notes.
Making her New York stage debut as Mrs Lovett (a role originated by Angela Lansbury), Thompson runs off with the show. Her Mrs Lovett is shrewd, conniving and utterly in control of the operation until the final moments. Her voice is silky one moment, brassy the next; it helps that the role is perfect for an imperfect voice.
Thompson's partner in crime, however, could have asked her for a few acting tips. Terfel's intimidating bass-baritone is perfect for Sweeney Todd, and his 6ft 4in frame conveys menace, but Terfel's Sweeney comes across as a monster not a brute.

Amazon's week long deals for 2013 Black Friday and Cyber Monday continue today, Wednesday, November 27, with a new schedule of DVDs and Blu-rays going on sale today and they are starting early. The deals throughout the day begin just after midnight today and there are a few titles worthy of your attention. If I had to select one title from the batch of deals going live today it would certainly be the Planet of the Apes Blu-ray collection, beyond that the Schindler's List Blu-ray is worth considering and, if you're looking for a nice little quadruple feature you can't really go wrong with picking up the Atonement, Pride & Prejudice, Jane Eyre and Elizabeth bundle, the price isn't yet available, but I have to assume it won't break the bank. Finally, that Best of Warner Bros. Romance Collection at 12:20 Pm might be worth a look as it includes some greats such...

We delve back into more than a century of A Christmas Carol movies to find the best and worst adaptations of Dickens' festive tale...
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, the classic story of a time travelling pensioner who sees dead people, is a festive fairytale which has itself become part of Christmas folklore. In terms of favourite Christmas tales, Rudolph and Frosty may wrap up the children's vote, but for most people, it's Dickens’ seminal work which would get the nod.
The story was written by Dickens in order to tackle the relatively new issue of urban poverty, and in particular the growing underclass of impoverished townsfolk produced by the Industrial Revolution. With the rapid shift away from conventional farming and trade practices, and with the rise in new technological advancements, many people were suddenly without work and without the necessary skills to find a job.

"I'm not one of those people who sits in the dark, looking at their work from 70 years earlier," Angela Lansbury insists. "I'm really not."
Still, the widely loved stage and screen star is pleased that many of her films are about to be showcased by Turner Classic Movies. The channel has named the "Murder, She Wrote" television icon its Star of the Month for January, with Lansbury festivals running each Wednesday.
The titles range from her screen debut in 1944's "Gaslight" (Jan. 4) to her chilling portrayal of one of movie history's most manipulative mothers in 1962's "The Manchurian Candidate" (Jan. 18) -- both Oscar-nominated performances.

Kathy Griffin’s limited-run Broadway solo act Kathy Griffin Wants a Tony is hilarious. Not only that, she produced a fantastic fake bio for Playbill. Here it is, in its entirety:
Kathy Griffin (Kathy Griffin) is thrilled to be performing at the storied and absolutely haunted Belasco Theater, where she has already told legendary stage impresario David Belasco’s ghost, in no uncertain terms, to “Suck it.” Ms. Griffin is especially excited to be reprising the role of Kathy Griffin after spending four years as Kathie Lee Gifford in a touring company of Ms. Gifford’s one-woman musical jamboree, Jesus Is My Homeboy.

A stage version of the "Dracula" story is coming back from the dead - the bloodsucking vampire is swooping into a New York theater for the first time in 33 years. Italian actor Michel Altieri will play the title role in the show, opposite "Sweeney Todd" star George Hearn as vampire-hunter Van Helsing and "American Beauty"'s Thora Birch, who plays Dracula's victim, Lucy.
The show is set to launch at the Off-Broadway Little Shubert Theatre next month, according to Variety.
The Dracula stage play last ran on Broadway in 1977. The Count was portrayed by Frank Langella, who, like Bela Lugosi before him, would go on to perform the role on the big screen. That production was a hit, running for a total of 930 performances and winning a Tony Award for costume designer Edward Gorey and another one for "most innovative production of a revival".

During last nights' Tony Awards, Angela Lansbury was named the first Honorary Chairman of the American Theatre Wing. After over six decades in the business, the five-time Tony-winning actress accepted the honor and pledged to work to promote education in theater.
Lansbury was also nominated for her performance in A Little Night Music. At 84-years-old it's astounding she can even keep up the pace of a Broadway schedule, but Lansbury belongs on stage. In the past, she won Tonys for Sweeney Todd, Dear World, Gypsy, Blithe Spirit, and Mame.

Distinguished film actor, five-time Tony Award winner, star of "Murder, She Wrote" (the longest-running detective drama in television history), and currently co-starring in "A Little Night Music" on Broadway, Angela Lansbury is now also the honorary chairwoman of Career Transition for Dancers. With offices in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, the organization provides counseling, scholarships, workshops, and resource centers—all free of charge—to help dancers establish themselves in new careers when dancing is no longer an option. But why would Lansbury, a performer known largely as an actor and a singer, commit herself to an organization designed specifically to serve dancers? "Because when one is playing a leading role in a musical production on Broadway, the folks you are most in touch with are the dancers," says Lansbury, who has performed such roles in nine Broadway or Broadway-bound musicals, including "Anyone Can Whistle" (1964), "Mame" (1966 and 1983), "Gypsy" (1974), and "Sweeney Todd...

Victor Garber says the biggest challenge he's facing at the moment is not quite feeling up to snuff. "I have a touch of bronchitis to remind me of my mortality," he quips, noting it doesn't help a performance either. That aside, the most daunting task in doing a Noël Coward play is "just getting the words out and making them sound like you're actually saying them," asserts Garber, who is stretched out in his dressing-room chaise longue before a performance of the playwright's "Present Laughter." "Doing Coward is in many ways akin to doing Shakespeare," says the actor. "I'm not that smart. Few are. But you have to make it sound like you are that smart." It has also been more than a decade since Garber last appeared on Broadway, when he starred with Alan Alda and Alfred Molina in Yasmina Reza's "Art."But have no doubt: The Tony-...

It had been a successful decade for the comic book movie, with that trend continuing into the latter half of the decade. Just as looked like the public demand for irradiated heroes looked to be diminishing, with lacklustre showings from the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four, out came Iron Man. Coupled with a brilliant script and an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr as the titular zillionaire industrialist/playboy/freedom fighter/all-round genius, the end result was something truly special. Downey’s career was also revitalised, earning him a role in Tropic Thunder (which would earn him an Oscar nomination). Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk took a similar approach, this time giving Edward Norton of Fight Club fame a shot at getting under the skin of the green goliath. They set a tough act to follow, but followed they were by one Christopher Nolan. With the Batman...

And now a pre-show moment with Martha Plimpton...
That's right. I was conceived because of the musical Hair. I wouldn't exist without it. That's Plimpton sandwiched inbetween Broadway's Hair boys: my fellow Byu alum Will Swenson, who we've been drooling on for awhile and Gavin Creel (Love the... tie? scarf? tarf?). Plimpton was actually speaking the truth to the reporter. Her parents Keith Carradine (yes, the star and composer of one of the greatest song scenes in all of cinematic history, "I'm Easy" from Robert Altman's Nashville) and Sheila Plimpton met while performing Hair on stage in the late 60s.
I bring up this pre-show red carpet moment because Martha Plimpton is a handy human symbol of how much the mainstream media, and by extension the public, misses out on because they ignore theater and great actors who work in it. To the general public Ms. Plimpton isn't recognizable or,...

Reverence, whether it is of performers or athletes, is something I try not to overdo. But if there is one performer I can honestly say I revere, it is Angela Lansbury. When I was just a freshman in college, I saw her Tony-winning performance in the original production of Mame; over the years since, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing her other great stage performances, including Tony-winning roles in Dear World, Gypsy, and Sweeney Todd; I even saw her when she played Anna for three weeks in the late ‘70s revival of The King and I. Her stage work is legendary, and she is one of our true theatrical treasures. Happily, Ms. Lansbury is back on the boards once again, working with a high-quality cast in a revival of Noel Coward’s 1941 drawing room comedy Blithe Spirit. I’m happy to report that the 83-year-old Ms. Lansbury continues to amaze and dazzle,...

Angela Lansbury has returned to her first love — the theater — in triumph, earning rave reviews for her appearance as a larger-than-life medium in the revival of Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit." Angela Lansbury has already won four Tony Awards for lead actress in a musical — "Mame" (1966), "Dear World" (1969), "Gypsy" (1975) and "Sweeney Todd" (1979). Two years ago, she contended for the first time as lead actress in a play for "Deuce" but was bested by Julie White for "The Little Dog Laughed." Were she to win for this new role in the old chestnut "Blithe Spirit," Lansbury would be tied with Julie Harris who has five Tony Awards, all for lead actress in a play.
The original 1941 run of "Blithe Spirit" predated the Tony Awards by six years. However for the 1987 revival, Geraldine Page contended as lead actress for playing Madame Arcati. She lost to Linda Lavin in Neil Simon's "Broadway Bound.
