With Earth Day coming up in a few days, Brian Eno has called on Mother Nature to give David Bowie’s 1995 deep cut “Get Real” a unique twist using environmental sounds. The remix has been released as part of a global music initiative called Sounds Right, which has made Nature an official artist on streaming platforms to raise money for earth conservation.
Thanks to Sounds Right, a share of royalties from any song that credits Nature as an artist will go to EarthPercent, a charity founded by Eno. The organization will then distribute that money to conservation and restoration projects in the world’s “most precious and precarious ecosystems” under the guidance of the Sounds Right Expert Advisory Panel, a group of world-leading biologists, environmental activists, Indigenous People’s representatives, and experts in conservation funding.

Exclusive: Michael MacMillan retired from the world of television 17 years ago. Except, he didn’t.
The Canadian film and TV producer and business exec had made his name as CEO and Chairman of Alliance Atlantis, the company that built the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation franchise into a worldwide phenomenon, before its broadcast unit was sold off in 2007 to Canwest Communications and Goldman Sachs — making a lot of cash and taking a well-earned early retirement.
However, just four years later, he was back to do it all again.
MacMillan launched Blue Ant Media in 2011, originally as a Canadian channel operator, much the same as Alliance Atlantis had operated. However, just like his previous company, network ownership was only a means to an end — owning content was always the real play.
In the 13 years that have followed, Blue Ant has transformed from a channel operator to a content company playing in the international rights ownership game,...

What would you think if you could have more movies than you can handle at your disposal at all times? Yeah yeah, that’s what we all thought streaming services were supposed to do before we realized that even our purchases are temporary. Well that dream is coming to fruition, as scientists have developed a disc that can hold the equivalent of nearly a quarter-million DVDs aka more content than you can even fathom.
This so-called “super DVD” can hold — ready for this? — approximately 125,000 gigabytes. For reference, single-layer DVDs hold around 4.5 Gb of data, while a double-layer can hold about 8.5. And for those wondering what the term for this massive amount of data is, the word you’re looking for is “petabit.”

A high-concept horror movie so casual that it sometimes feels like it doesn’t have any concept at all, Chris Nash’s “In a Violent Nature” is an “ambient slasher” that might owe more to the likes of Terrence Malick and Gus Van Sant than it does to Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers — at least until the part when the unstoppable teen-murderer disembowels a female victim and then twists her entire head through the giant hole he’s carved in her stomach.
Told from its killer’s point of view (except when it’s not), this anemic but formally compelling genre exercise strips the whole madman in a mask routine down to its skeleton. It starts, of course, with some doomed kids in the woods, their voices disembodied long before their limbs will get the chance. Nash frames them out in favor of focusing on the gold necklace the characters...

Chris Nash, who wrote and directed the indie horror movie “In A Violent Nature,” loves the slasher genre so much that he decided to totally deconstruct it.
Much like the “Friday the 13th” franchise, “Violent Nature” hits all the known beats: a masked killer named Johnny traipsing through the woods, camping teens, a local who escaped death years ago, buckets of gore. But including these cornerstones doesn’t feel like a retread—instead, it gave Nash room to play freely. Like, for example, making the perspective largely tethered to the killer. There’s no spotlight on heroes or final girls here, only the glimpses and whispers of those unfortunate enough to find themselves in the path of Johnny’s reign of terror.
“We went in knowing that we were just following around this slasher character the entire time,” he said of the film, which is set to debut in the...

Exclusive: Paramount’s Channel 5 is headed to South Africa in search of hippos and crocodiles.
The UK terrestrial network has ordered a pair of series from Sky Studios-owned factual specialist True to Nature presented by British naturalist Steve Backshall. Croc Watch and Hippo Watch will both run to two hour-long episodes, and Fremantle has picked up international sales rights.
This marks one of the most ambitious natural history bets for Channel 5. Across the two series, the programs will journey into the heart of South Africa to access the lives of crocodiles and hippos, revealing remarkable secrets and showcasing the beauty of their natural habitats.
Backshall, whose True to Nature-produced series Whale with Steve Backshall premiered on Sky Nature in the UK earlier this month, will reveal the mysteries of their survival by exploring their daily habits, hunting techniques and parenting instincts, and the intricate dynamics of the wild that enable them to thrive.

When VidCon makes its East Coast debut in Baltimore, its first keynote speaker will come from just down the road. Christian Tom, an official Assistant to the President and the Director of the White House Office of Digital Strategy, will share some opening remarks to kick off VidCon Baltimore.
Tom will use his keynote to share details about his office’s creator partnerships and influencer-focused campaigns. The Biden administration has used digital platforms to appeal to young voters since the 2020 campaign. After moving into the White House, President Biden continued to court TikTok stars — even as he mulled a federal ban on that same app.
“Our efforts to reach all Americans online are rooted in meeting people where they are. This increasingly means not only by creating White House content from White House channels, but also working with a wide range of creators, on topics that matter to them and their audiences,...

The ever-evolving nature of fame and infamy gets examined in Dream Scenario, Kristoffer Borgli’s follow-up to his dark comedy Sick of Myself. It’s the Norwegian director’s first feature in America, and with it comes the confident backing of A24, producer Ari Aster, and a starry cast led by Nicolas Cage. It all sounds promising, and for a time Borgli rises to the occasion with a compelling, satirical high concept. But most of the goodwill Dream Scenario builds in its first half goes away once Borgli degrades the story into a facile, reactionary attack against cancel culture.

A team of German scientists have discovered 28 new risk genes, pushing the total number to 51, that can increase the risk of severity in Covid-19 infections. A great many criteria determine whether or not we get seriously ill from Covid-19. Besides our age and any previous or existing conditions, they also include genetic factors. Right from the start of the pandemic, scientists have been investigating the links between genetic factors and severe Covid-19.
“Knowing about genetic risk factors helps scientists to develop successful drugs and predict risks better,” said Dr. Kerstin Ludwig from the Institute of Human Genetics at the University Hospital Bonn.
According to the findings published in the journal Nature, the genes are linked to critical illness, hospitalisation and infection rates when individuals are infected with Covid. The increased number of genes will enable the scientists to map genes to pathways that are involved in viral entry, airway defence and immune system response.

Jerusalem, Sep 7 (Ians) A team of Israeli scientists has created a complete human embryo model using stem cells that closely mimics the real one, but without sperm or egg.
According to the team from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, the human-like model will unravel the mysteries of the initial month that is “still largely a black box” for scientists.
The team headed by Prof. Jacob Hanna managed to grow the models outside the womb up to day 14, after culturing in the lab.
Cellular aggregates derived from human stem cells in previous studies could not be considered genuinely accurate human embryo models, because they lacked nearly all the defining hallmarks of a post-implantation embryo.
Reported in the journal Nature, the new synthetic embryo models had all the structures and compartments characteristic of this stage, including the placenta, yolk sac, chorionic sac and other external tissues that ensure the models’ dynamic and adequate growth.

Tokyo, Sep 4 (Ians) Japanese researchers have revealed the mechanism how breast cancer evolves as the entire process — from the early stages of cell mutations starting in puberty to their manifestations as breast cancer
in later years — has remained shrouded in mystery.
The team from the Kyoto University showed the mechanism by which breast cancer is formed in the cells of the mammalian epithelium, whose main function is to secrete milk. The findings are published in the journal Nature.
According to the team’s first analysis, approximately 20 mutations accumulate annually in each epithelial cell until menopause. After menopause, however, the mutation rate significantly decreases.
“Additionally, our results suggest that oestrogen influences mutation accumulation in mammary epithelium, which correlates with our discovery of decreased accumulation after childbirth,” said Seishi Ogawa from the varsity’s Graduate School of Medicine.

Tokyo, Sep 1 (Ians) Japanese researchers have discovered a type of gut bacteria that might help improve insulin resistance, and thus protect against the development of obesity and Type-2 diabetes.
The study, published in the scientific journal Nature, involved genetic and metabolic analysis of human faecal microbiomes and then corroborating experiments in obese mice.
In obese mice, the team led by Hiroshi Ohno at the Riken Center for Integrative Medical Sciences (Ims) looked at how treatment with different bacteria affected blood sugar levels.
They found that A. indistinctus lowered blood sugar and reduced insulin resistance and the amount of carbohydrates available to the mice.
These results were compatible with the findings from human patients and have implications for diagnosis and treatment.
In the study, the researchers first examined as many metabolites as they could detect in the faeces provided by over 300 adults at their regular health checkups. They compared this metabolome...

New Delhi, Aug 31 (Ians) The heavily-mutated new BA.2.86 Omicron variant is seeing a rapid increase in cases globally, with the number rising to 25. However, experts state that there is nothing to worry about.
After just three cases the World Health Organization (Who) had declared it a variant under monitoring (Vum), and also called for closer monitoring of the variant to understand its spread and severity.
BA.2.86, which is a spin-off of the BA.2 version of Omicron, was first detected in Denmark on July 24. It has so far infected people in the UK, US, Israel, Denmark, South Africa, Portugal, Thailand and Switzerland, Sweden, Canada and Scotland.
It carries over 35 mutations in crucial parts of the virus when compared to Xbb.1.5. This mutation count is roughly similar to the original Omicron variant that caused a surge in infections compared to its predecessors.
But BA.2.86 “will not be more severe. Like other Omicron sub-lineages,...

New York, Aug 31 (Ians) The Omicron variants of the Covid-19 virus, which have rapidly spread around the world over the past year, latch onto our cells more tightly, invade them more efficiently, according to a new study.
The first Omicron variant, designated BA.1 has been followed by a series of variants, each with mutations that increased their ability to infect and spread.
These include variants designated BA.2, BA.4, BA.5, Bq.1.1, Xbb and its derivatives Xbb.1 and Xbb.1.5 and the newly detected BA.2.86.
“The Omicron variants that have become dominant over the past year, such as Bq.11 and Xbb.1.5, have high affinity for the receptor on host cells, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, and they are able to fuse with the cell membrane and invade much more efficiently than previous Sars-CoV-2 Omicron variants,” said David Veesler, Professor of biochemistry at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine.

New York, Aug 28 (Ians) In a first, scientists have completed the long-anticipated genome sequencing of male Y chromosomes, finally mapping the set of end-to-end human chromosomes. The human Y chromosome — one of the two human sex chromosomes — has been notoriously difficult to sequence and assemble because of its complex repeat structure that includes long palindromes, tandem repeats and segmental duplication, said researchers from the the Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) consortium, in the paper published in the journal Nature.
The T2T consortium, part of the Human Genome project, sequenced the entire human genome from a cell with Xx chromosomes last year.
“Just a few years ago, half of the human Y chromosome was missing [from the reference] — the challenging, complex satellite areas,” said Monika Cechova, co-lead author on the paper and postdoctoral scholar in biomolecular engineering at University of California, Santa Cruz.
“Back then we didn’t even know if it could be sequenced,...

London, Aug 27 (Ians) Fighting lung infection? Eating cruciferous vegetables like kale, cauliflower, broccoli, or cabbage can help ease infection, according to a study conducted in mice.
Researchers at the Francis Crick Institute found that the Ahr — aryl hydrocarbon receptor — is a protein found at barrier sites like the gut and the lung.
The natural molecules in these cruciferous vegetables are dietary ‘ligands’ for Ahr, which means, once eaten, they activate Ahr to target a number of genes. Some of the genes targeted switch off the Ahr system, allowing it to self-regulate.
The effect of Ahr on immune cells is well understood, but the research, published in the journal Nature, now shows that Ahr is also highly active in endothelial cells lining blood vessels in the lung.
The lung barrier between the body and the air outside is only made up of two layers, one of endothelial cells and one of epithelial cells,...

New York, Aug 24 (Ians) US researchers have in a breakthrough developed a brain implant system, which when powered by artificial intelligence (AI) helps paralysed patients with speech difficulties communicate via a computer screen.
The speech-aiding brain implant by Stanford University consists of baby-aspirin sized sensors — square arrays of tiny silicon electrodes — that are implanted in patients’ cerebral cortex, the brain’s outermost layer.
Each array contains 64 electrodes, arranged in 8-by-8 grids and spaced apart from one another by a distance of about half the thickness of a credit card. The electrodes penetrate the cerebral cortex to a depth roughly equaling that of two stacked quarters.
The implanted arrays are attached to fine gold wires that exit through pedestals screwed to the skull, which are then hooked up by cable to a computer.
The devices transmit signals from a couple of speech-related regions in patients’ brains to state-of-the-art software that decodes...
