Hedeby in the summer of 1944. The fourth year of the Second World War. Erik and Märta have married and moved to town. Ville sits abandoned by the Tourist Hotel, Svensson is tormented by an unknown illness.
A new day dawns over Hedeby. In the barracks, the soldiers await the late arrival of Lieutenant Kyhle. Today's exercise ends as unexpectedly as it began.
From the city of Tälje, Märta and Erik go to a reconciliation dinner at Rävfarmarn's house. Nora and Stora Småland also go to Hedeby to meet the relatives. Lieutenant Kyhle retires from military life and becomes a civilian.
Signe has moved into town after Svensson's death. Erik does business with Nisse Fisk. At home in Hedeby, Ville has advanced to butler at the Stadshotellet.
The winter of 1944 comes cold and hard to Hedeby. There is a strike at the factory and Stora Småland becomes the leading figure that everyone listens to. Count Kyhle's career as a pig charmer is over. Nicodemus collides with the Merchant.
Spring emerges from ice and cold. Peace is near but the strike continues. Art dealer Count Kyhle is on the green again with Pärsy's willing assistance. So finally on May 7 the messenger of peace comes to Hedeby.
