Christoph Waltz is calling out the “posthumous sanctification” of late legendary actor Marlon Brando.
According to Waltz, the revelry around Brando’s legacy is “annoying,” to not mince words.
“Now it’s Brando’s 100th birthday. I read two articles and I found them both really annoying, and this posthumous sanctification […] to make him […] a mythology,” Waltz told Interview magazine while in conversation with Caleb Landry Jones. “And it’s ridiculous, because he was a ham.”
Waltz added of Brando, “In the beginning he was fantastic. No one had ever seen anything like it.”
However, Waltz also called Brando’s performance in “The Missouri Breaks” “difficult to watch.” He added that Brando’s reputation of being “difficult” on sets, or accusations of inappropriate conduct on the set of “The Last Tango in Paris,” did not affect his perspective on Brando’s acting ability.

By delivering performances that averaged out to 98 minutes in length, the five women who competed for the 2023 Best Actress Oscar achieved the category’s all-time highest screen time mean, shattering a record that had stood for over half a century. They will continue to hold that distinction until at least 2025, as the present lineup’s average falls below those of the last two groups. What’s more, this is the first year since 2020 that the lead actress contenders have less collective screen time than their male counterparts.
The 2024 Best Actress nominees have an average screen time of one hour, 14 minutes, and 33 seconds, or 52.18% of their respective films. Exactly 23 minutes and 24 seconds and 16.70 percentage points separate them from last year’s record-breaking group. In terms of actual time, their average is the 12th highest in the category’s 96-year history, while their percentage mean is the 32nd lowest.

“Poor Things” has performed well throughout this awards season, winning Best Comedy/Musical Film at the Golden Globes and snagging 11 Oscar nominations in total. That is the same number of awards the Searchlight Pictures movie was nominated for at the BAFTAs, where we predict it to perform well.
One person who is set to have a good night at the British film awards is Tony McNamara, who adapted Alasdair Gray‘s 1992 novel of the same name. McNamara previously worked with Emma Stone on “Cruella” and “The Favourite,” the latter of which was another Yorgos Lanthimos film. McNamara co-wrote that period piece with Deborah Davis. The duo was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars in 2019 but lost to “Green Book”.
However, they won the BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay, over “Cold War” (Janusz Głowacki and Paweł Pawlikowski), “Green Book,” “Roma” (Alfonso Cuarón), and “Vice” (Adam McKay). The film won six other BAFTAs in total,...

With “Barbie,” the nomination leader and the other half of Barbenheimer over on the comedy side, “Oppenheimer” is expected to emerge as the biggest drama winner at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The Christopher Nolan blockbuster is the odds-on favorite to prevail in four of its eight categories, including Best Drama Film. It’s also predicted to win Best Director for Nolan, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson.
Excluding “La La Land” (2016), which won all seven awards for which it was nominated, “Oppenheimer” would be just the seventh film this century to win four awards in a single night. In fact, no film during this timeframe besides “La La Land” has won more than four. The now-disbanded Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s penchant for spreading the wealth has meant that most films typically max out at three awards — “The Banshees of Inisherin...

Until 2018, it seemed virtually impossible for someone to win the lead actress prize more than once at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. But now three people have accomplished it and a fourth may join the club in February as Emma Stone is the odds-on favorite to prevail for “Poor Things.” She captured the SAG Award for “La La Land” (2016) en route to her Oscar win. A year after that was when SAG started handing out some bookends.
Frances McDormand broke the curse with her win for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017), 21 years after she triumphed for “Fargo” (1996). Renée Zellweger became the second woman to hold two wins in the category when she took home the award for “Judy” (2019) to go with her statuette for “Chicago” (2002). And the most recent two-time champ is Viola Davis, who bagged the trophy for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (2020) after winning for “The Help” (2011).

What will the people choose?
In its final stretch, on Sunday, the Toronto International Film Festival will announce the film chosen by the public for the People’s Choice Award of its 48th edition. After “Poor Things” took home the Golden Lion at Venice, we look to the Canadian awards season staple to boost a film in the hunt for best picture.
The top prize has become one of the most vital predictors of awards season success. In past years, best picture winners such as Peter Farrelly’s “Green Book” (2018) and Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland” (2020) made a winning stop at TIFF before getting Oscar glory. Other TIFF Audience Award recipients such as “The Fabelmans” (2022), “Belfast” (2021), “Jojo Rabbit” (2019), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017) and “La La Land” (2016) are among the movies that went on to receive noms.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. Briarcliff Entertainment will release “Dogman” in select theaters on Friday, March 15 before expanding on March 22.
Caleb Landry Jones graduates from menacing oddball character actor to sympathetic show-stopping lead in Luc Besson’s “Dogman.” But the French genre filmmaker’s first feature effort since 2019 assassin thriller “Anna” — and his second since 2017’s catastrophic space opera “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” — unfortunately doesn’t deliver the goods to match Landry Jones’ giddily unrestrained turn as a traumatized dog collector turned drag cabaret act turned … well-heeled shooter and avenger of capitalist greed and domestic abuse?
That’s nothing against the 33-year-old American actor’s Method-level dedication to the role. Landry Jones has stamped himself as indie film’s consummate weirdo, playing charmingly raffish outsiders or scary psychos. His Douglas in “Dogman” is a little bit of both,...

“Barbie” has become a resounding success for Warner Bros. and director Greta Gerwig. The film grossed $155 million in its opening weekend and received rave reviews from critics hailing the direction, script, design, and, above all, performances.

Fans of quirky, darkly comedic murder mysteries should find Maggie Moore(S) to be a worthy descendant of films like Fargo and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri that is right in their wheelhouse. In a small town that sees little crime, Police Chief Jordan Sanders (Jon Hamm) and his semi-useful deputy Reddy (British comedian Nick Mohammed) find the body of a young woman named Maggie Moore. Her husband is grieving but it’s not clear if he’s sincere. Before they can solve that crime, another Maggie Moore around the same age turns up dead. Her husband also seems suspicious, although for completely different reasons. The two women didn’t know each other, or have any identifiable connection, but Hamm suspects the killings of blond Maggie and brunette Maggie must somehow be intertwined.

Champions is a comedy movie directed by Bobby Farrelly starring Woody Harrelson and Ernie Hudson.
Remake of the Spanish film Campeones. No one dared to trash the Spanish film, but this one has been given its due by specialized critics.
Sometimes you have to judge cinema as cinema, and sometimes even film critics get it right.
Sentimental and trite.
Movie Review
Is it better than the Spanish version? Of course, Hollywood exhibits all its industry muscle, and what was a European production in the Hispanic film – with its own merit but lacking on a production level, here the industry exhibits its potential and gives a quick polish to everything: the editing, the sound, and puts a star, Woody Harrelson, in the spotlight.
It takes everything from the Spanish film, except for the great campaign that was made to judge a film not by its cinematic content but by its more social side.

The jury system can by trying, but “Jury Duty” — a doc-style comedy series coming to Freevee on April 7 — examines it through the eyes of one juror. The catch: The actual juror, Ronald Gladden, doesn’t realize the case is fake and everyone else is an actor. All the crazy machinations inside the courtroom are planned, and everyone is in on it, except for Gladden. Will this lone juror be able to find his way to justice despite all of the chaos surrounding the case?

The films in contention for the 2023 Best Original Screenplay Oscar are “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans,” “Tar,” and “Triangle of Sadness.” Our odds currently indicate that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10/3) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “The Banshees of Inisherin” (18/5), “Tar” (9/2), “The Fabelmans” (9/2), and “Triangle of Sadness” (9/2).
For the fifth time in six years, multiple original writing nominees also picked up directing and producing bids. In fact, in a historic first, all five movies in this lineup are also in the running for Best Director, with Tony Kushner (“The Fabelmans”) being the only original scenarist not nominated there as well. He shares his writing notice with the film’s director, Steven Spielberg, who now has 22 Oscar bids to his name and has previously won for helming “Schindler’s List” (1994) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1999) and producing the former.

It may be easy to forget that acclaimed writer Martin McDonagh — the mind behind nine-time Oscar nominated film “The Banshees of Inisherin” — has never won an Academy Award for writing. He has earned Best Original Screenplay nominations for “In Bruges” in 2009, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” in 2018 and now for “Banshees” in 2023, and he even won back in 2006 for Best Live Action Short for “Six Shooter,” but the writing prize has been elusive. This year, he is in a close contest with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s script for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Might this nail-biting race shake out for McDonagh exactly as it did back in 2018, when the “Three Billboards” scribe ultimately lost to Jordan Peele for “Get Out”?

Can you imagine being nominated in this category and hearing the very last nominee’s name, and it’s the one and only John Williams, who has received 53 Oscar nominations and won five times? Granted, it’s been almost 30 years since his name was last called on Oscar night, so maybe the other four nominees don’t have so much to worry about, but make no mistake that this is a highly competitive year.

Kerry Condon earned her first Oscar nomination for Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” in which she plays Siobhán, the complex sister of Colin Farrell’s simple Pádraic. Condon has worked with McDonagh for two decades; her first major role was in his play “The Lieutenant of Inishmore,” and in 2009, she starred in his drama “The Cripple of Inishmaan.” She also appeared in his film “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” which won Academy Awards for Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell. The actor, who hails from Thurles, Tipperary, Ireland, also shared that she shaved her head twice for McDonagh — once for “The Lieutenant of Inishmore” in London and four years later for the play’s New York premiere.

Continuing our look at the below-the-line crafts categories at this year’s Oscars, we get to film editing. The editor(s) on a movie are frequently the most important collaborators with a director. The director and editor will frequently sit in an edit bay for hours, days, and even months to craft the pace and feel of a movie until it’s just right, as is the case with the five movies nominated this year.

The term “passion project” is thrown around a lot in Hollywood; usually as a reference to a personal story that means a ton to its writer, director or star.
But what kind of pressure does that put on the rest of the cast and crew?
This Oscar season, there are a lot of so-called passion projects that have received accolades. Among them: “The Fabelmans,” a family story that was inspired by director and co-writer Steven Spielberg’s own parents; “The Banshees of Inisherin,” a script that writer-director Martin McDonagh spent years perfecting set in an era in Irish history that few outsiders might know about; and the Marvel movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” for which director and co-writer Ryan Coogler had to follow the success of the film’s predecessor, 2018’s “Black Panther” while doing justice to its late star, Chadwick Boseman.

In 2021, former child star Ke Huy Quan (1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and 1985’s “The Goonies”) ended his two-decade acting hiatus by appearing in the Netflix movie “Finding ‘Ohana.” He then took on his ninth feature film role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which has made him one of the season’s most-lauded individuals. His next industry stop is the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where he stands a strong chance of achieving both supporting actor and ensemble victories.
Along with “The Banshees of Inisherin” pair Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan, Quan is one of three overall SAG Awards newcomers in this year’s supporting actor lineup. In addition “Braveheart” (1995), “Gangs of New York” (2002) and three “Harry Potter” movies, Brendan Gleeson’s acting resume include several collaborations each with filmmaking brothers John Michael and Martin McDonagh. If size really doesn’t matter, then one film has the edge to win ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards: “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Because of the group’s stringent rules stipulating only actors with their own title cards are eligible for the prize, the dark comedy boasts just four nominated cast members: Kerry Condon, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan. And if “Banshees” prevails, it’ll tie the record for smallest cast to win the award.
“Sideways” (2004) has the record all to itself right now. Thomas Haden Church, Paul Giamatti, Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh were part of its winning ensemble, and the quartet triumphed in a year of small casts in a field of six. “Hotel Rwanda” also had four nominated cast members, while “Million Dollar Baby” had just three. As with leading men, the winner of Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars is usually one of the more seasoned competitors. Of the 86 winners to date, only four Best Supporting Actor champs were in their 20s and just 15 were thirtysomething, including 2021 champ Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Messiah”). “Avatar: The Way of Water,” with its continued blockbuster momentum, was the only film nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars this past week to stand among the Top 10 highest-grossing films at the box office this weekend with a No. 1 total of 15.7 million.
Several other nominated films, most of which completed their theatrical runs and hit streaming months ago, received a theatrical re-release in an effort to capitalize on their newfound Academy Award contender status, but only a couple of them were able to even crack 1 million in weekend grosses.
Of all the non-“Avatar” movies back in theaters, the highest-grossing was A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which made just over 1 million from its re-release in 1,400 theaters. With 11 nominations and an A24 record box office total of 71 million domestically and 104 million worldwide, “Eeaao” stands in the middle ground between the wide release successes in the Best Picture field...

The gap between the most popular films at the box office and among Oscar voters has been widening for years, if not decades. But this year’s list of Best Picture nominees shows just how big the divide is between the populist contenders that have made hundreds of millions and the prestige titles that have struggled even compared to their pre-pandemic counterparts.
On the one hand, there’s James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water,” Joseph Kosinski’s “Top Gun: Maverick” and Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” three Best Picture nominees that ranked among the top 15 highest grossing films in North America. Since the Oscars expanded the top category from five nominees up to 10 in 2009, the only time three films in the top 15 got nominated was in 2018 when “Black Panther,” “A Star Is Born” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” made the list.

Tuesday’s Oscar nominations brought the jaw-droppers many expected. Some met with joy, and others with heartbreak.
Social media and awards pundit circles have been touting Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” as an undisputed front-runner for most of the awards season. With a leading 11 nominations, it’s in an excellent position to win the best picture statuette for distributor A24, the same studio that pulled off the memorable “Moonlight” upset over “La La Land” at the 2017 show. A24 led the day for studios with a resounding 18 nominations, with Netflix in second with 16.
The multiverse flick landed expected noms for acting — Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu — but flexed in the artisan races like costume design, original score and original song.
However, holding the title of the “one to beat” can bring the claws out of other studios and strategists...

By now, on the eve of Oscars nominations, there are many prospective nominees that read as sure bets.
For example, given all the recognition they have received from awards bodies that include Academy voters, it would truly be a shock not to see “TÁR” star Cate Blanchett or “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star Michelle Yeoh nominated for Best Actress. Prognosticators may not be able to predict what the second half of the Best Picture nominees will be, but all feel comfortable saying “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “The Fabelmans” will get in there.
To get a better gauge on what will be nominated and likely win every category at the 95th Oscars, read IndieWire’s predictions here. However, we thought it would also be fun to anticipate some of the biggest reaches that could still come true, as far as nominations in the above the line categories go.

Now that the Venice, Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals have taken place, here’s what we know for sure about the 2022 awards race.
We know that Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” has won Toronto’s People’s Choice Award, the same award won by “Nomadland,” “Green Book,” “12 Years a Slave” and “The King’s Speech” in the last dozen years. And that Brendan Fraser, Cate Blanchett and Colin Farrell have won acting awards for “The Whale,” “Tar” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” respectively.
But what does that really mean? That “The Fabelmans” will win Best Picture because it’s a very personal coming-of-age story from one of our most revered filmmakers, and because it’s also about the movies? That Fraser will win Best Actor for his harrowing performance in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale?” That Blanchett will win Best Actress for playing an out-of-control conductor in Todd Fields’ “Tár?...

Thank you to Cameron Bailey and the incredible staff at TIFF; thank you to Universal Pictures; and a very special thank you to all the movie fans in Toronto who have made this past weekend one I’ll never forget.”

The motion picture academy has handed out Oscars for leading performances since the first ceremony in 1929. While the Best Actor prize is typically taken by a veteran, the Best Actress Oscar has tended to go to an ingenue. However, those age biases could be changing. While a whopping 32 of the 95 Best Actress champs have been in their 20s when they picked up their Oscars, the last three women to win were Frances McDormand, 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”), 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”) and 45-year old Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”). Chastain’s closest rival last year were Colman, now 48, for “The Lost Daughter” and 47-year-old Penelope Cruz for “Parallel Mothers”. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Actress predictions.)
Besides Zellweger, the only other Best Actress champs in their 50s were both 54 when they won: Julianne Moore, who finally prevailed after four losses for “Still Alice” in 2015, and theater veteran Shirley Booth,...

We can only exclaim that the fall festivals “are back!” so many times before it ceases to be true, but in the case of the 2022 season, we’re still working well within the confines of rock-solid logic. The fall festivals are back! After unspooling as all-virtual affairs, truncated in-person gatherings, or some combination of the two over the last two years, the biggest fall festivals — Venice, Telluride, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival — are all launching full-scale in-person events in the coming weeks.
And what a bevy of new films do they have to show off. This year’s fall festival season includes new films from Steven Spielberg, Frederick Wiseman, Laura Poitras, Martin McDonagh, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Andrew Dominik, Sarah Polley, Lena Dunham, Luca Guadagnino, Sam Mendes, Joanna Hogg, Chinonye Chukwu, Jafar Panahi, Todd Field, Darren Aronofsky, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Noah Baumbach, and that’s only the start.

Prime Video got off to a fast start this summer with the release of The Boys season 3 on June 3. Now, as we enter the dog days, Prime Video is set to keep the warm weather good times rolling with a new twist on an old classic. That’s right, Amazon’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by some good old-fashioned baseball.
A League of Their Own, the TV adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie, is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Like the movie before it, the series will dramatize the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which saw women playing America’s pastime while the major leagues were on pause for World War II. Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) co-created the show and will star as catcher Carson Shaw.
Other Prime Video Originals of note this month include season 2 of British comedy The Outlaws on and the Ron Howard-directed Thirteen Lives,...

Prime Video will continue rolling out its summer slate in the month of August, releasing new original series, as well as a mix of suspenseful films, action movies and more.
Amazon’s series version of “A League of Their Own” will debut its eight-episode first season on Aug. 12, introducing new characters and stories set in the historical opening of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl).
Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” tells the real-life story of how a young boys’ soccer team was rescued from the Thai mountain cave where they got stuck for 10 days along with their coach.
Other new film arrivals include hits from earlier this summer, “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Academy Award-nominated film “Licorice Pizza” also arrives on Prime Video this month.
Freevee will also have new arrivals this month.
