Review by Roger Carpenter
If you are a horror movie aficionado then no introduction is needed for Blood Feast, nor to the films of Herschel Gordon Lewis in general. But just in case you’ve never heard of this pioneering no-budget epic, here’s a quick synopsis. Blood Feast is the story of an Egyptian caterer, Fuad Ramses, who is into the dark arts and has a need for human body parts. It just so happens a series of gruesome killings of young women around town are occurring. Detective Thornton, along with the help of the beautiful and unwitting Suzette Fremont, try to solve the case before every young co-ed in town disappears. Blood Feast was a sensation when it was first released to the grindhouse/drive-in circuit in 1963. Over the years it became the stuff of legend to horror fans everywhere with Fangoria magazine praising Lewis’ films in its pages,...

What is this? Sex-oriented movies with believable psychodramatics, made by a committed artist with taste and talent? Joe Sarno’s pictures still aren’t suitable for grandma, but he’s way, way above the exploitation grindhouse competition of his day. His ’60s B&W pictures are not only watchable, they’re involving. Restored to pre-print condition, they’re — how can I best put this? — artistically respectable.

Last week, Austin’s annual Fantastic Fest bowed under a cloud that stemmed from the secret re-hiring of former Birth.Movies.Death. editor-in-chief Devin Faraci by Drafthouse founder Tim League and the continuing fallout of accusations directed at co-founder Harry Knowles. As the beloved genre festival kicks into its second half, it continues to draw attention for programming choices that reportedly left audience members on edge.
Over the weekend, Fanstastic Fest attendee Kim Sherman took to Instagram to share her experience with a Saturday afternoon showing of Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’or winner “The Square,” an event capped by a post-screening stunt that didn’t strike Sherman and other audience members as a wise choice.
Sherman wrote that, after the film concluded, “They asked us to remain seated after the film while they brought a ‘special guest’ into the room. Then they brought out an actor from the film...

Carla likes to have fun and wants to meet the right man, but Julie always seems to be in the way and constantly scares off the flavour of the month. Agfa (American Genre Film Archive), a non-profit that preserves the legacy of genre films, is pleased to announce details for The Zodiac Killer Blu-ray, which will be released on July 25! This is the first title of dozens in our collaboration with Something Weird Video following a successful 2015 Kickstarter campaign.
Directed by Tom Hanson, who had previously owned a chain of Pizza Man restaurants, The Zodiac Killer was made to capture the real-life Zodiac Killer. That plan didn’t work. Instead, we got the most outrageous and compelling “tabloid horror” vortex in the history of planet Earth. And beyond. During theatrical screenings, Hanson constructed in-theater “traps” to lure the killer from hiding. These included the use of an ice cream freezer filled with rent-a-cops and a raffle with a motorcycle as a prize. You won’t get insight like this by watching a David Fincher movie.

Something weird is going on with Steven Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky, and it actually has nothing to do with the big Nascar heist that the movie centers around. Actually, it has a lot to do with that big Nascar heist, because it’s all about the person who wrote the movie. A first-time screenwriter named Rebecca Blunt is credited with the Logan Lucky script, but according to a Hollywood Reporter story, there’s a very good chance she doesn’t actually exist.
Blunt is supposedly “a beauty” who lives in England and is “brimming with humor and life,” but she never visited the film’s set, hasn’t given any interviews, and she—along with the rest of the cast and crew—only received a barebones bio in the credits list given to the press. In theory, a real first-time screenwriter who penned a Soderbergh movie that’s getting some...

Amazon released five new pilots on Friday, and it’s up to viewers to determine which ones get picked up. “The Legend of Master Legend,” “Budding Prospects,” “The New V.I.P.’s,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Oasis” make up the 2017 Amazon pilot season. Some are good, some are bad, but the power lies with all of us to determine which are worthy of a full season order. Read our reviews below to get a little insight into each offering, and watch the episodes for yourself right here.
“The Legend of Master Legend”
John Hawkes can’t catch a break. When he nabbed the lead in Charlie Kaufman’s FX pilot — Charlie Kaufman — it didn’t get picked up. He landed an Oscar nomination for “The Sessions,” but his follow-ups have meant diddly-squat comparatively. Sure, he stole a few scenes in “Lincoln” and got to take part in Amy Schumer’s amazing sketch,...

Something weird (weirder than usual) happened in La on Thursday night; from all corners of Hollywood emerged some of the hottest male stars in film and music, and the photographs are really something to behold. Ryan Reynolds, Nick Jonas, and Donald Glover were all honored at GQ's annual Men of the Year event, while Dev Patel did a panel for his movie Lion and Robert Pattinson stepped out for a Dior party. Listen, we're not complaining at all, but this is almost too much eye candy to handle. Look through to see all the hot guys who showed up and showed out in Hollywood the other night. I'm a big fan of trailer compilations, and over the last decade we've seen a lot hit the home video market. Niche genre archives have been plundered and reels have been unearthed. Companies like Something Weird Video and Synapse Films have been releasing them for years, but nothing on the scale of the upcoming release from new label Garagehouse Pictures. Trailer Trauma 3: 80s Horror-thon is, appropriately, the third trailer compilation from this company that launched last year with the release of the previously lost kung fu buddy comedy, Ninja Busters. The major difference between this release and previous trailer compilations is that TT3 clocks in at an astonishing seven and a half hours of blood, gore, boobs, and more. Not only is it massive...

To most, September 26th is the date when, in 1680, the Dutch city Gorinchem suffered a citizen’s revolt due to an imposed tax on cereal. From now on, though, that will change, as any right-thinking person will remember that date in 2016 as the day The Godfather Of Gore, the great Herschell Gordon Lewis, died.
The brain behind a range of vintage cult classics, spanning the gamut of exploitation cinema, from splatter movies to comedy erotica and supernatural witchcraft thriller (niche!), Lewis’ influential sixties and seventies productions paved the way for the video nasties of the eighties and the gory likes of David Cronenberg and Peter Jackson and stand up today as camp, gawdy historical documents of a bygone era. Something Weird Video has been doing the dark lord’s work since 1990, distributing all the best (and worst) exploitation movies from the ’60s and ’70s and treating them with more respect than most of them deserve. Now, the Alamo Drafthouse’s American Genre Film Archive (the largest non-profit genre film archive in the world) is joining forces with Something Weird, and the duo has just announced the first wave of Something Weird titles to receive new 4k digital transfers and distribution to home video and select theaters in 2017.

There are few absolutes in life, let alone in the world of horror; but this I find to be true: Herschell Gordon Lewis was appreciated in his time. Beloved, actually. Sadly passing away on September 26th, 2016 at the age of 87, he left behind a slew of grindhouse classics encapsulating everything from biker flicks to sex ed pieces. But Hgl will be forever known for a string of unique and groundbreaking horror films including The Gore Gore Girls (1972), his last opus before he took a 30 year sabbatical from filmmaking. And on the Hgl spectrum, it’s one of his best.
If you’re familiar at all with “The Godfather of Gore” (a moniker he wore as a point of pride) but haven’t seen The Gore Gore Girls, the differences between this and say, Blood Feast (1963), his first splatter extravaganza, are minimal. Made for a pittance of 63 grand, Ggg has all...

Herschell Gordon Lewis, a horror icon long known as the “Godfather of Gore,” has passed away of unspecified causes at 87. He was best known for innovating the “splatter” subgenre with 1963’s “Blood Feast,” which Lewis made on a $24,500 budget partly as a response to “Psycho” — he wanted to show the act of murder on film in graphic detail, not just the aftermath. Something Weird Video broke the news on Facebook.

Some very upsetting news is circulating today, as it's being reported that Herschell Gordon Lewis, aka The Godfather of Gore, has passed away at the age of 87.
The news of Lewis' passing comes from Something Weird Video (via Bloody Disgusting). While the exact cause of death is unknown, there's no doubt that Lewis will be missed by countless people within the horror community, where he touched many lives with his unfiltered creativity both behind and in front of the camera.
Lewis left his unique imprint on the horror genre as early as the 1960s with films like Blood Feast (1963), Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964), Something Weird, The Gruesome Twosome, and A Taste of Blood.
In 2002, Lewis returned to directing with Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat, and he recently appeared in Marcel Walz's Blood Feast remake and Joe Castro's Terror Toons 3.

Horror film pioneer broke ground with films such as Blood Feast and Two Thousand Maniacs! before returning to advertising in the mid-1970s
Exploitation legend and “godfather of gore” Herschell Gordon Lewis has died aged 87. His longtime distributors Something Weird Video (named after Lewis’ 1967 feature) broke the news in a Facebook post.
With his 1963 film Blood Feast, Lewis is widely credited with pioneering the splatter genre, despite it being considered “an insult even to the most puerile and salacious of audiences” in a Variety review. A later critique described it as “one of the important releases in film history, ushering in a new acceptance of explicit violence that was obviously just waiting to be exploited”.

Something Weird Video reports Herschell Gordon Lewis, the director credited with inventing the “splatter” sub-genre of horror cinema, has died. He was 87.
Lewis began in the film industry by producing and directing exploitation movies featuring nudity, a profitable endeavor that nonetheless limited their ability to be marketed and distributed, thanks to censorship by the Motion Picture Production Code. However, he soon became known as “the godfather of gore” for his gruesome and sometimes silly outings released throughout the ’60s and ’70s. 1963’s Blood Feast (which featured some great ad copy for the movie) is arguably his best known film, showcasing gore effects that included an actual sheep’s tongue. As Lewis told Film Journal, “I’ve often compared Blood Feast to a Walt Whitman poem. It’s no good, but it was the first of its kind.”

It was an honest mistake.
I thought CBS’s new MacGyver series was going to be a continuation of the 80s original, as in the new MacGyver would be the old MacGyver’s son/nephew/other relation. But then I saw that dreaded word: reboot.
A reboot means the original deserves a reexamination, so I watched the 1985 pilot (series available on Netflix) to see how much things have changed in MacGvyer-land in 31 years.
The first time we see Angus MacGyver (played by Richard Dean Anderson) in the original, he’s hanging off the side of a cliff “somewhere in Central Asia.”
In the MacGyver Season 1 Episode 1 reboot, a much-younger MacGyver (Lucas Till) is in a tux in Lake Como, using his voice-over to describe sex with his girlfriend, who also happens to be the “analyst” in his ear on his latest mission.

After terrifying audiences worldwide with the blockbuster J-horror classic Ring and its sequel, director Hideo Nakata returned to the genre for Dark Water, another highly atmospheric, and critically acclaimed, tale of the supernatural which took the common theme of the "dead wet girl" to new heights of suspense and drama.
Based upon on a short story by Ring author Koji Suzuki, Dark Water follows Yoshimi, a single mother struggling to win sole custody of her only child, Ikuko.

Fantastic Fest has announced the second wave of programming for this year’s edition of the Austin-based fête, which runs from September 22 — 29. “The Bad Batch,” a new restoration of 1971’s “The Zodiac Killer,” “Toni Erdmann,” “The Handmaiden” and opening-night selection “Arrival” are among the most prominent selections, with a number of appropriately oddball offerings thrown in as well. Full list below.
“Aalavandhalan” (Suresh Krissna)
Kamal Hassan stars in this ridiculously entertaining tale of an Indian commando pitted against his own serial killer twin brother in a deadly race to save the beautiful Tejaswini from certain death.
“Arrival” (Denis Villeneuve)
When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team — led by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) — are brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers — and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life,...

For years now, New York’s film community has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of its very own Alamo Drafthouse, the vibrant independent theater chain based in Austin. And now, it seems, it may actually happen. But when? “Soon,” said founder and CEO Tim League during a discussion at Ifp’s Made in New York Media Center on Tuesday.

While the Brooklyn venue was expected to arrive months ago, League explained that the delay had been caused by a fire alarm control panel that somebody accidentally blew up. “We’re ready to go — the projectors have all been tested and it’s very nice looking inside.” The 25th location for the chain will have seven screens and is located at 445 Gold Street, near the Atlantic Avenue terminal in Brooklyn.

Outcast plays with perspective in its second episode, which revisits Kyle’s childhood memories of his mother…
This review contains spoilers.
1.2 (I Remember) When She Loved Me
The most thankless part in an unambiguous supernatural drama is the role of the disbeliever. The character who, knee-deep in gooey evidence of vengeful ghosts or hungry werewolves tsks at the suggestion there is Something Weird Going On. “You don’t actually believe in all that shit, do you?” they say, usually seconds before a bat-demon crunches its way out of their thorax and discards their corpse like the used innards of a Kinder Egg.
In Outcast, that role belongs to cop Mark Holter, brother-in-law to demon-magnet Kyle Barnes. The laws of genre predict that Mark isn’t long for this world, that the town’s widely accepted lurking evil will soon punish him for his scepticism.
And yet, scepticism...

I admit it, I’m a sentimental old fart. I get choked up and maudlin very often, when I think of family and friends, a moment in time when I realized the tragedy life can bring to us, or the joy. I tear up at the movies regularly, or reading certain passages in books. But I never thought I would weep at the loss of a video system. If you read We Are Movie Geeks regularly you must be aware of the video revolution of the 1980s, when VHS players and recorders found a place in almost every home in America. I hope you recall the early days when VHS was neck and neck with Betamax, a technically better system. Remember the days of Mom and Pop video rental stores when almost anyone could open a store front, and with a collection of VHS tapes start making money? As one of the many,...

Earlier this month I went to the future. I mean this somewhat literally, as my flight from Toronto to Helsinki, Finland put me 8 hours ahead, but also because I was attending the Night Visions Film Festival, a biannual celebration of genre cinema that endearingly dates its Halloween editions 1000 years into the future (there's also a June edition that sets its date in the 21st century). This tradition goes back to the festival's inauguration in the late 90s, when the late Mike Vraney and Lisa Petrucci visited Helsinki with a programme of Something Weird titles. Despite preceding the new millennium, the programme was billed as "Something Weird 2000," anecdotally because Vraney thought 2000 sounded so much cooler. Mikko Aromaa, the editor-in-chief of GoreHound, a...

1982. What a year. From The Beast Within to Creepshow to Friday the 13th Part III to Q, it displayed a smorgasbord of fantastical delights for terror consumers. Standing heads (two, to be exact) and shoulders apart from the crowd was Frank Henenlotter’s grimeball debut, Basket Case, a lovely tale of a boy and his twin brother. Who happens to be a monstrous blob. And lives in a basket.
Shot on 16mm for a reported $35,000 Us, Basket Case premiered in Henenlotter’s beloved Times Square, and became a big hit on the grindhouse circuit. This shouldn’t be surprising, as the film is a big, fat, wet kiss to the pre-cleanup New York of the ’80s (think diseases, not Disney). Critics at the time acknowledged the uniqueness of it, but most could not overlook the technical deficiencies or the broad range of performances on display. No matter. Horror fans that...

“Some people are born to be Sweet Trash”
Michael (Duncan McLeod, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls) is a down on his luck drunken longshoreman whose life takes a weird and potentially deadly twist when he clashes with Dan (William Connors in his only role), a loan shark with a thirst for blood as big as his hunger for money. After losing big at one of Dan’s back room card games, Michael gets an opportunity to settle his $6,000 debt by joining Dan’s operation, but ultimately turns it down. This leads him to have his hand roughed up by a couple of heavies. After taking some drastic measures, Michael is forced to flea for his life. Does he go to Mexico or Columbia? No, he fleas to Coney Island of all places where he meets a seductive blonde carnival girl and then gets seduced...

Something weird-ass this way comes with the imminent arrival of Nikias Chryssos' debut feature Der Bunker (The Bunker). A supremely odd bit of work that had its debut at the Berlin Film Festival and is now making its way through the international genre festival circuit - soon to arrive at Fantastic Fest - the film also has its German theatrical release just around the corner, which means its first trailer has now arrived.A young student is lodging with a family in the forest where the peace and seclusion of their subterranean bunker will allow him to concentrate on an academic work.
